Free Download Globalizing Family Values: The Christian Right In International Politics By Doris Buss, Didi Herman
2003 | 240 Pages | ISBN: 0816642079 | PDF | 1 MB
With little fanfare and profound effect, ''family values'' have gone global, and the influence of the Christian Right is increasingly felt internationally. This is the first comprehensive study of the Christian Right's global reach and its impact on international law and politics. Doris Buss and Didi Herman explore tensions, contradictions, victories, and defeats for the Christian Right's global project, particularly in the United Nations. The authors consult Christian Right materials, from pamphlets to novels; conduct interviews with people in the movement; and provide a firsthand account of the World Congress of Families II in 1999, a key event in formulating Christian Right global policy and strategy. The result is a detailed look at a new global player-its campaigns against women's rights, population policy, and gay and lesbian rights; its efforts to build an alliance of orthodox faiths with non-Christians; and the tensions and strains as it seeks to negotiate a role for conservative Christianity in a changing global order. Doris Buss is assistant professor of law at Carleton University in Ottawa. Didi Herman is professor of law at Keele University in the United Kingdom.

Free Download Huisheng Shou, "Globalization and Welfare Restructuring in China"
English | 2017 | ISBN: 0367595850 | EPUB | pages: 144 | 1.9 mb
In the past few decades, the change in China's welfare system has been characterised by a balanced distribution of benefits across social sectors and the institutionalization of welfare redistribution. This process has occurred without significant political change that would empower politically disadvantaged groups such as the urban and rural poor. This book questions what has motivated the regime to redistribute welfare benefits through an institutionalized manner whilst its political structure remains largely unchanged.

Free Download Globalization Challenged: Conviction, Conflict, Community By George Rupp, Jagdish N. Bhagwati
2006 | 128 Pages | ISBN: 0231139306 | PDF | 1 MB
In Globalization Challenged, George Rupp, president of the International Rescue Committee, outlines the steps necessary to engage the contemporary conflict between traditional religious belief and Western secularism. According to Rupp, the key objective is to build a community that is inclusive without denying the validity of particular commitments. While he acknowledges the threat of ''resurgent fundamentalism,'' Rupp also criticizes secularists who fail to recognize or acknowledge the role of religion and its ideological equivalents in influencing public policy. All views, he asserts, are subject to comparative appraisal. The challenge is to develop ways to evaluate different approaches responsibly, leading to a greater understanding of one's own convictions as well as the positions of others.Rupp reinforces his critical and theoretical analysis with dramatic accounts of recent events in Afghanistan, the Democratic Republic of Congo, and Sudan& mdash;places where the International Rescue Committee operates. He then addresses the role of globalization in fueling instability worldwide. Inadequately regulated privatization has compromised health care, education, and social programs in many countries, whereas an inclusive community would encourage a more equitable distribution of resources.Essays by Jagdish Bhagwati, Jeremy Waldron, and Wayne Proudfoot expand Rupp's arguments, and in a final chapter Rupp responds to the issues they raise. Essential reading for anyone who hopes to understand the roots of today's geopolitical tensions, Globalization Challenged asks that we shed our complacency, recognize the legitimate role of conviction, and take actions to shape a more just and inclusive society.

2001 | 192 Pages | ISBN: 0415260159 | PDF | 1 MB
Beginning with a detailed discussion of the World Trade Organisation and the Uruguay Round and its achievements, this book delves into the causal factors behind the failure to launch the new round of multilateral trade negotiations in Seattle in December 1999. Dilip K. Das tries to determine the precise point reached by the global trading system and map out a way forward, exploring the likely items to be included in the agenda for the new round of multilateral trade negotiations and provides contours for a post-Seattle global trading system. This book provides an excellent overview of the contemporary global trading system and will be very useful to advanced students and professional economists. Free Download Global Governance Reform: Breaking the Stalemate By Colin I. Bradford, Johannes F. Linn
2007 | 161 Pages | ISBN: 0815713630 | PDF | 1 MB
The current system of international and financial institutions is proving inadequate to meet many of today's most important challenges, such as terrorism, poverty, nuclear proliferation, financial integration, and climate change. The International Monetary Fund, World Bank, and United Nations were founded at the end of World War II, and their structures of voting and representation have become obsolete--they do not reflect today's balance of economic and political power. Reform of these international institutions is critically important but is currently in stalemate. A new push is needed from the leaders of major countries, acting together through a reformed G-8 that includes emerging market economies such as China, India, Brazil, and others. Moreover, since global challenges are interrelated, they demand integrated approaches, with greater coordination among international institutions. Editors Colin Bradford and Johannes Linn argue that without reconstituting the G-8 summit into a larger, more representative group of leaders, with a new mandate to provide strategic guidance to the system of international institutions, the world will fall further behind in addressing global challenges. The path to global reform is defined by the need to act in connected, congruent, and combined ways on summit reform and international institutional reform if either is to increase the capacity to meet those challenges.
