The Marxist Foundations of the Oppositional Gaze

The Marxist Foundations of the Oppositional Gaze: A Paradigm Shift in Questioning the Capitalist Moment
English | 2026 | ISBN: 3032220270 | 429 Pages | PDF EPUB (True) | XXX MB
This book provides a foundational study of bell hooks's groundbreaking theory of the oppositional gaze, which is first introduced in her book, Black Looks (1992), by placing the oppositional gaze on Marxist footing for the first time. While situating hooks's oppositional gaze within an intellectual tradition of the contemporary gaze emerging with French philosophers Jean-Paul Sartre, Maurice Merleau-Ponty, Jacques Lacan, and Michel Foucault, The Marxist Foundations of the Oppositional Gaze intervenes in the dominant accounts of the gaze, as it appears in and proliferates Western thinking, which largely overlook racialized, gendered, and classed dynamics.

The Linguistics of Analysing Deception in Written Texts

The Linguistics of Analysing Deception in Written Texts
English | 2026 | ISBN: 1009671103 | 94 Pages | PDF (True) | 5 MB
This Element explores the analysis of deception in written texts from a forensic linguistic perspective. It provides an overview of the evolution of deception research and philosophy, from its earliest conceptualisation as a sin against God, to cue leakage theories and pseudoscientific beliefs built on medieval concepts of deceptive behaviour, to current psychology and linguistic based approaches to identifying lying. This requires an appreciation of where linguistic analysis fits into the eight decades plus of deception research, which is addressed here: the relationships between deceptive intention and communication; between emotional states and the linguistic features claimed to represent them; and between language and linguistic analysis. This Element is written for the non-linguist professional, especially those engaged in investigative and inquisitorial contexts, to provide them with some knowledge to assess the strengths and limitations of approaches to analysing lying and deception as produced in written texts.

The Leopard Lily Project A Story of Nazi Pseudoscience

The Leopard Lily Project: A Story of Nazi Pseudoscience
English | 2026 | ISBN: 3032247705 | 102 Pages | PDF EPUB (True) | 3 MB
This book tells the bewildering tale of one of the most insidious, yet almost forgotten crimes against humanity planned by the Nazis during the Third Reich. Soon after taking power in 1933, the Nazis introduced a program of involuntary sterilization of those German citizens who they considered unworthy of reproduction. These were predominantly, but not exclusively, people afflicted with hereditary diseases. Doctors were required to register with newly established health courts every known case of hereditary illness, including genetic blindness and deafness, manic depression, schizophrenia, epilepsy, congenital feeble-mindedness, Huntington's chorea, and alcoholism. Common sterilization methods at the time required long recovery periods and often resulted in death, so when an Austrian dermatologist wrote to Himmler proposing that sterilization of 3 million Bolsheviks could be carried out with the South American plant Leopard Lily (dieffenbachia seguine seguinum, or dumb bane), Himmler, who was easily impressed by quacks, had his interest piqued. To connect the various strands of this complex story, this book explores Nazi ideology, their fascination with alternative medicine, particularly herbal medicine, and Himmler and his inclination towards pseudoscience, as well as other key individuals. Anyone with an interest in alternative medicine and pseudoscience, medical ethics, the history of medicine, or the Nazi regime will learn much from this previously untold story.

The Legal Anatomy of the Body

The Legal Anatomy of the Body: Health, Rights, and Politics in Times of Emergency
English | 2026 | ISBN: 3032264332 | 399 Pages | PDF EPUB (True) | 19 MB
This open access book provides a multidisciplinary examination of the governance of the human body in the post-pandemic public health landscape. It delves into how the body is regulated, policed, protected, and politicized in times of emergency, drawing on the expertise of a wide range of scholars-including experts in public, health, and comparative law, as well as philosophers, sociologists of law, and specialists in biopolitics, complexity theory, systems theory, and the history of medicine. At its core is the idea of the body as a contested site, subject to legal control, political intervention, and societal scrutiny during public health emergencies. Through the examination of issues like consent, surveillance, the marginalization of vulnerable groups, and the intersections of gender and health, the book critically assesses how emergency measures have not only challenged but reshaped our understanding of freedom, citizenship, and social norms. It interrogates the state's role in governing health and bodies, analyzing contemporary legal debates and philosophical inquiries about the boundary between "normality" and "crisis", and how this impacts democracy, rights, and the rule of law.

The Invisible Handshake Proverbs and Economics

The Invisible Handshake: Proverbs and Economics
English | 2026 | ISBN: 3032251931 | 90 Pages | PDF EPUB (True) | 1 MB
This book argues that formal economic inquiry and proverbial wisdom share a deep epistemic kinship, each functioning as a refined form of everyday cognition for navigating scarcity, uncertainty, and choice. Through peculiar case studies it also considers the contrasts between mountain and maritime economies, rural and metropolitan societies, and explores the profound influence of culture, religion, and gender on regional economic trajectories.. The core thesis is that proverbs encode key economic principles―such as opportunity cost, risk, and incentives―as culturally embedded lessons that illuminate the intuitive and institutional foundations of economic life. Exploring themes that span finance, labor, behavioral biases, inequality, gender, and policymaking, the book investigates how proverbs and economic models converge, diverge, and enrich one another. Framed by the guiding question of what proverbs reveal about how people think and decide in economic contexts, it ultimately presents these two bodies of knowledge as complementary perspectives that together clarify the human predicament of acting under constraint.
