Speaking Up Understanding Language and Gender
Free Download Allyson Jule, "Speaking Up: Understanding Language and Gender"
English | ISBN: 1783099607 | 2018 | 144 pages | EPUB | 312 KB
From slut-shaming to the allegedly shrill voices of female politicians, from vocal fry to online misogyny, the language women use (and the language used about them) is as controversial as it has ever been. Our language use and our gender have an enormous impact on the way we understand ourselves and the world around us, and the way we are treated by society. Using the latest academic research, Allyson Jule tackles some of the most pressing issues facing feminism today, including how language use and related ideas about gender play out in the home, workplace and online. It turns out that many popular ideas about gender and language are more complicated than they first appear. This book will change the way you think about language, and give you the tools to challenge the world around you.

Spatial Cognition IV. Reasoning, Action, Interaction International Conference Spatial Cognition 2004, Frauenchiemsee, Germany,
Free Download Spatial Cognition IV. Reasoning, Action, Interaction: International Conference Spatial Cognition 2004, Frauenchiemsee, Germany, October 11-13, 2004, Revised Selected Papers By Christoph Hölscher, Tobias Meilinger, Georg Vrachliotis, Martin Brösamle, Markus Knauff (auth.), Christian Freksa, Markus Knauff, Bernd Krieg-Brückner, Bernhard Nebel, Thomas Barkowsky (eds.)
2005 | 519 Pages | ISBN: 3540250484 | PDF | 9 MB
This is the fourth volume in a series of books dedicated to basic research in spatial cognition. Spatial cognition is a field that investigates the connection between the physical spatial world and the mental world. Philosophers and researchers have p- posed various views concerning the relation between the physical and the mental worlds: Plato considered pure concepts of thought as separate from their physical manifestations while Aristotle considered the physical and the mental realms as two aspects of the same substance. Descartes, a dualist, discussed the interaction between body and soul through an interface organ and thus introduced a functional view that presented a challenge for the natural sciences and the humanities. In modern psych- ogy, the relation between the physical and the cognitive space has been investigated using thorough experiments, and in artificial intelligence we have seen views as diverse as 'problems can be solved on a representation of the world' and 'a representation of the world is not necessary. ' Today's spatial cognition work establishes a correspondence between the mental and the physical worlds by studying and exploiting their interaction; it investigates how mental space and spatial "reality" join together in understanding the world and in interacting with it. The physical and representational aspects are equally important in this work. Almost all topics of cognitive science manifest themselves in spatial cognition.

Spanish Lessons Cinema and Television in Contemporary Spain
Free Download Paul Julian Smith, "Spanish Lessons: Cinema and Television in Contemporary Spain"
English | ISBN: 1785331086 | 2017 | 176 pages | PDF | 830 KB
Though unjustly neglected by English-language audiences, Spanish film and television not only represent a remarkably influential and vibrant cultural industry; they are also a fertile site of innovation in the production of "transmedia" works that bridge narrative forms. In Spanish Lessons, Paul Julian Smith provides an engaging exploration of visual culture in an era of collapsing genre boundaries, accelerating technological change, and political-economic tumult. Whether generating new insights into the work of key figures like Pedro Almodóvar, comparing media depictions of Spain's economic woes, or giving long-overdue critical attention to quality television series, Smith's book is a consistently lively and accessible cultural investigation.

Spanish Cinema in the Global Context Film on Film
Free Download Samuel Amago, "Spanish Cinema in the Global Context: Film on Film "
English | ISBN: 0415854253 | 2013 | 214 pages | EPUB | 2 MB
Across a broad spectrum of media, markets, and national contexts, self-reflexivity continues to be a favored narrative mode with wide ranging functions. In this book Amago argues that, in addition to making visible industry and production concerns within the film text, reflexive aesthetics have a cartographic function that serves to map the place of a film (geographic and cultural) within the global cinemascape, and thus to bring into sharper relief images of the national. Focusing on films in the contemporary Spanish context that in some way reflect back on themselves and the processes of their own production, that purposefully blur the distinction between reality and fiction, or that draw attention to the various modes of cinematic exhibition and reception, Amago proposes ways in which these movies can be employed to understand Spanish national cinemas today as imbedded within a dynamic global system.

Spacious Minds Trauma and Resilience in Tibetan Buddhism
Free Download Sara E. Lewis, "Spacious Minds: Trauma and Resilience in Tibetan Buddhism"
English | ISBN: 1501715356 | 2020 | 252 pages | EPUB | 1519 KB
Spacious Minds argues that resilience is not a mere absence of suffering. Sara E. Lewis's research reveals how those who cope most gracefully may indeed experience deep pain and loss. Looking at the Tibetan diaspora, she challenges perspectives that liken resilience to the hardiness of physical materials, suggesting people should "bounce back" from adversity. More broadly, this ethnography calls into question the tendency to use trauma as an organizing principle for all studies of conflict where suffering is understood as an individual problem rooted in psychiatric illness.

Spaces of Political Pedagogy Occupy! and other radical experiments in adult learning
Free Download Cassie Earl, "Spaces of Political Pedagogy: Occupy! and other radical experiments in adult learning"
English | ISBN: 036788724X | 2019 | 196 pages | EPUB | 784 KB
This book examines three sites of pedagogical innovation, all of which are explicitly activisms against the current political and pedagogical climate. Drawing on an interdisciplinary framework including autonomous Marxism, post-anarchism, social movement theories and theories of critical pedagogy, it examines social movements though a pedagogical lens and attempts to understand how connections can be made between social movement learning and other initiatives and forms of higher learning. With studies of the London Occupy! movement; The Social Science Centre, a co-operative higher learning provider that practises popular education in city venues; and a university politically opposing the 'student as consumer' ethos, Spaces of Political Pedagogy connects these various projects as a continuum of educational experimentation, offering insights into the ways in which these sites practice pedagogy and the manner in which these practices could be implemented more widely to inform and improve struggles for wider social justice. As such, it will appeal to scholars of education and sociology with interests in pedagogy, social movements and activism.

Spaces of Contention Spatialities and Social Movements
Free Download Byron Miller, "Spaces of Contention: Spatialities and Social Movements"
English | ISBN: 0754677788 | 2013 | 320 pages | EPUB | 2 MB
As social movements have become more complex, geographers are increasingly studying the spatial dynamics of collective resistance and sociologists and political scientists increasingly analyzing the role of space, place and scale in contentious political activity. Occupying a position at the intersection of these disciplinary developments, this book brings together leading scholars to examine how social movements have employed spatial practices to respond to and shape changing social and political contexts. It is organised into three main sections: (1) Place, Space and Mobility: sites of mobilization and regulation, (2) Scale and Territory: structuring collective interests, identities, and resources, and (3) Networks: connecting actors and resources across space. It concludes by suggesting that different spatialities (place, scale, networks) interlink within one another in particular instances of collective action, playing distinctive yet complementary roles in shaping how these actions unfold in the political arena. By mapping state of the art conceptual and empirical terrain across Geography, Sociology, and Political Science, 'Spaces of Contention' provides readers with a much needed guide to innovative research on the spatial constitution of social movements and how social movements tactically and strategically approach and produce space.

Spaces of CapitalSpaces of Resistance Mexico and the Global Political Economy
Free Download Chris Hesketh, "Spaces of Capital/Spaces of Resistance: Mexico and the Global Political Economy "
English | ISBN: 0820352845 | 2017 | 240 pages | EPUB | 2 MB
Based on original fieldwork in Chiapas and Oaxaca, Mexico, this book offers a bridge between geography and historical sociology. Chris Hesketh examines the production of space within the global political economy. Drawing on multiple disciplines, Hesketh's discussion of state formation in Mexico takes us beyond the national level to explore the interplay between global, regional, national, and sub-national articulations of power. These are linked through the novel deployment of Antonio Gramsci's concept of passive revolution, understood as the state-led institution or expansion of capitalism that prevents the meaningful participation of the subaltern classes.
