Think to New Worlds
Free Download Think to New Worlds: The Cultural History of Charles Fort and His Followers
English | 2024 | ISBN: 0226831485 | 394 Pages | PDF (True) | 27 MB
Flying saucers. Bigfoot. Frogs raining from the sky. Such phenomena fascinated Charles Fort, the maverick writer who scanned newspapers, journals, and magazines for reports of bizarre occurrences: dogs that talked, vampires, strange visions in the sky, and paranormal activity. His books of anomalies advanced a philosophy that saw science as a small part of a larger system in which truth and falsehood continually transformed into one another. His work found a ragged following of skeptics who questioned not only science but the press, medicine, and politics. Though their worldviews varied, they shared compelling questions about genius, reality, and authority. At the center of this community was adman, writer, and enfant terrible Tiffany Thayer, who founded the Fortean Society and ran it for almost three decades, collecting and reporting on every manner of oddity and conspiracy.

With an uncomplicated yet rigorous approach, and using numerous examples, the book gradually guides readers through different kind of fluid machines/systems such as compressors, turbines, vapor and gas turbine power plants, internal combustion engines, and hybrid systems, discussing important issues for their application in propulsion. Furthermore, the book covers reversed cycle systems, with a special attention to air conditioning.

Theory and Applications of Relational Structures as Knowledge Instruments II International Workshops of COST Action 274, TARSK
Free Download Theory and Applications of Relational Structures as Knowledge Instruments II: International Workshops of COST Action 274, TARSKI, 2002-2005, Selected Revised Papers By Agnieszka Rusinowska, Rudolf Berghammer (auth.), Harrie de Swart, Ewa Orłowska, Gunther Schmidt, Marc Roubens (eds.)
2006 | 373 Pages | ISBN: 3540692231 | PDF | 4 MB
This book is a follow-up of LNCS volume 2929 with the same title, and presents the major results of COST action 274 (2002-2005), TARSKI: Theory and - plications of Relational Structures as Knowledge Instruments. Relational structures abound in the daily environment: relational databases, data-mining, scaling procedures, preference relations, etc. Reasoning about, and with, relations has a long-standing European tradition, which may be divided into three broad areas: 1. Algebraic Logic: algebras of relations, relational semantics, and algebras and logics derived from information systems. 2. Computational Aspects of Automated Relational Reasoning: decidability and complexity of algorithms, network satisfaction. 3. Applications: social choice, AI, linguistics, psychology, economics, etc. The main objective of the ?rst TARSKI book (LNCS 2929) was to advance the understanding of relational structures and the use of relational methods in applicable object domains. There were the following sub-objectives: 1. Tostudythesemanticalandsyntacticalaspectsofrelationalstructuresarising from 'real world' situations 2. To investigateautomatedinference for relationalsystems, and, wherepossible or feasible, develop deductive systems which can be implemented into industrial applications, such as diagnostic systems 3. To develop non-invasive scaling methods for predicting relational data 4. To make software for dealing with relational systems commonly available We are con?dent that the present book will further the understanding of int- disciplinary issues involving relational reasoning. This book consists of papers which give a clear and self-contained overview of the results obtained by the TARSKI action, typically obtained by di?erent persons from di?erent work - eas.

Theories of Legal Obligation (Law and Philosophy Library, 146)
Free Download Theories of Legal Obligation (Law and Philosophy Library, 146) by Deryck Beyleveld, Stefano Bertea
English | April 7, 2024 | ISBN: 3031540662 | 173 pages | MOBI | 0.45 Mb
This volume collects six original essays by internationally respected researchers who have devoted themselves to the study of legal obligation. It brings together works that innovatively address key dimensions of the current debates concerning legal obligation from different and, in some cases, even opposing theoretical perspectives. As a result, the collection offers a comprehensive discussion of legal obligation that promises to significantly advance our understanding of the obligatory dimension of law. What specifically connects the contributions gathered here is one common thread: coming to terms with a notion - legal obligation - that is of both practical and theoretical importance. On the one hand, it is widely regarded as a fundamental legal concept by legal practitioners and laypeople alike, as not only judges, prosecutors, lawyers, and juries but also ordinary citizens make extensive use of obligation-related terms and discourses. On the other hand, the notion of legal obligation is of paramount significance for the theory of law. Indeed, even legal theorists who, quite understandably, refuse to reduce the law to a mere obligation-imposing device and opt instead for a view in which the normative dimension of the law also encompasses powers, rights, permissions, privileges and immunities, duly acknowledge the centrality of legal obligation for the understanding and conceptualisation of law. Hence the importance of the treatments presented in this volume.

The politics of old age Older people's interest organisations and collective action in Ireland
Free Download Martha Doyle, "The politics of old age: Older people's interest organisations and collective action in Ireland"
English | 2014 | ISBN: 0719090474 | EPUB | pages: 128 | 0.4 mb
The politics of old age in the twenty first century is contentious, encompassing ideological debates about the rights and welfare entitlements of individuals in later life. An important aspect is the manner in which older people and their representative groups are given the opportunity to articulate their interests in the policy-making process. Drawing upon key literature in political science, social gerontology and cultural sociology, The politics of old age explores the relationship between ageing, politics and representation. It reveals the complexity of older people's representation and how the power the organisations exercise, their legitimacy and existence remain highly contingent on government policy design, political opportunity structures and the prevailing cultural and socioeconomic milieu.
