The Global City Debate Reconsidered Economic Globalization in Contemporary Dutch Cities
Free Download Jeroen van der Waal, "The Global City Debate Reconsidered: Economic Globalization in Contemporary Dutch Cities"
English | ISBN: 9089647600 | 2015 | 160 pages | PDF | 1123 KB
The idea of the "global city," which focuses on globalisation's impact on the social, financial, and political reality of cities in advanced economies, has become widely influential in the decades since its introduction-and yet the major issues in the "global city debate" remain unresolved. This book provides a systematic overview of the debate and competing theoretical notions, as well as an argument for the need to test the framework's empirical validity before the unresolved questions can be fruitfully addressed. By testing data from the Netherlands in the 1990s and 2000s, the author demonstrates the value of rigorous empirical scrutiny while offering fresh insights for the global city debate as a whole.

The Friars and their Influence in Medieval Spain
Free Download Francisco Garcia-Serrano, "The Friars and their Influence in Medieval Spain "
English | ISBN: 9462986320 | 2018 | 296 pages | PDF | 2 MB
The mendicant friars, especially the Dominicans and the Franciscans, made an enormous impact in thirteenth-century Spain influencing almost every aspect of society. In a revolutionary break from the Church's past, these religious orders were deeply involved in earthly matters while preaching the Gospel to the laity and producing many of the greatest scholars of the time. Furthermore, the friars reshaped the hierarchy of the Church, often taking up significant positions in the episcopate. They were prominent in the establishment of the Inquisition in Aragon and at the same time they played a major part in interfaith relations between Jews, Muslims and Christians. In addition, they were key contributors in the transformation of urban life, becoming an essential part of the fabric of late medieval cities, while influencing policies of monarchs such as James I of Aragon and Ferdinand III of Castile. Their missions in the towns and their educational role, as well as their robust associations with the papacy and the crown, often raised criticism and lead to internal tensions and conflict with other clergymen and secular society. They were to be both widely admired and the subjects of biting literary satire. As this collection demonstrates, the story of medieval Spain cannot possibly be fully told without mention of the critical role of the friars.

The Englishization of Higher Education in Europe
Free Download Robert Wilkinson, "The Englishization of Higher Education in Europe"
English | ISBN: 9463727353 | 2021 | 382 pages | PDF | 5 MB
The introduction of English as a medium of instruction (EMI) has changed higher education enormously in many European countries. This development is increasingly encapsulated under the term Englishization, that is, the increasing dispersion of English as a means of communication in non-Anglophone contexts. Englishization is not undisputed: legal challenges have arisen in several countries. Nor is it uniform; universities across Europe embrace Englishization, but they do so in their own way. In this volume, authors from 15 European countries present analyses from a range of perspectives coalescing around core concerns: the quality of education, cultural identity, inequality of opportunities and access, questions of justice and democracy, and internationalization and language policy. This book will appeal to researchers in applied linguistics, sociolinguistics, educational sciences, and political science, as well as policy makers and people with a concern about the direction of higher education.

The Energy Method, Stability, and Nonlinear Convection
Free Download The Energy Method, Stability, and Nonlinear Convection By Brian Straughan (auth.)
2004 | 450 Pages | ISBN: 1441918248 | PDF | 9 MB
This book describes the energy method, a powerful technique for deriving nonlinear stability estimates in thermal convection contexts. It includes a very readable introduction to the subject (Chapters 2-4), which begins at an elementary level and explains the energy method in great detail, and also covers the current topic of convection in porous media, introducing simple models and then showing how useful stability results can be derived. In addition to the basic explanation, many examples from diverse areas of fluid mechanics are described. The book also mentions new areas where the methods are being used, for example, mathematical biology and finance. Several of the results given are published here for the first time. This volume is a completely revised version of the first edition published in 1992. In addition to an update of material from the first edition, six new chapters have been added, covering topics such as multi-component convection-diffusion, convection flows in a compressible fluid, models of penetrative convection, convection with temperature-dependent viscosity and thermal conductivity, and stability of ocean flows. The final chapter gives details of two very different but highly accurate and efficient methods for numerically solving eigenvalue problems that arise in hydrodynamic stability. The new methods developed during the last eleven years and presented here will be of use to many readers in applied mathematics, engineering, physics, and other mathematical disciplines.

The End of Silence Accounts of the 1965 Genocide in Indonesia
Free Download Soe Tjen Marching, "The End of Silence: Accounts of the 1965 Genocide in Indonesia "
English | ISBN: 9462983909 | 2017 | 220 pages | PDF | 1011 KB
In the late 1960s, between one and two million people were killed by Indonesian president Suharto's army in the name of suppressing communism-and more than fifty years later, the issue of stigmatisation is still relevant for many victims of the violence and their families. The End of Silence presents the stories of these individuals, revealing how many survivors from the period have been so strongly affected by the strategy used by Suharto and his Western allies that these survivors, still afraid to speak out, essentially serve to maintain the very ideology that led to their persecution.
