Before Wilde Sex between Men in Britain's Age of Reform
Free Download Charles Upchurch, "Before Wilde: Sex between Men in Britain's Age of Reform"
English | ISBN: 0520258533 | 2009 | 288 pages | PDF | 2 MB
This book examines changing perceptions of sex between men in early Victorian Britain, a significant yet surprisingly little explored period in the history of Western sexuality. Looking at the dramatic transformations of the era―changes in the family and in the law, the emergence of the world's first police force, the growth of a national media, and more―Charles Upchurch asks how perceptions of same-sex desire changed between men, in families, and in the larger society. To illuminate these questions, he mines a rich trove of previously unexamined sources, including hundreds of articles pertaining to sex between men that appeared in mainstream newspapers. The first book to relate this topic to broader economic, social, and political changes in the early nineteenth century, Before Wilde sheds new light on the central question of how and when sex acts became identities.

Becoming Diasporically Moroccan Linguistic and Embodied Practices for Negotiating Belonging
Free Download Lauren Wagner, "Becoming Diasporically Moroccan: Linguistic and Embodied Practices for Negotiating Belonging "
English | ISBN: 178309835X | 2017 | 192 pages | PDF | 2 MB
Questions persist about post-migrant generations and their sense of belonging in one homeland or another. As descendants of migrants, 'second' and further generations often struggle to establish an unproblematic belonging in/to a resident homeland, as the place where they live and work but are often categorized as 'outsiders'. Simultaneously, because of improving access to travel, they can also maintain a physical presence in an ancestral homeland. However, their encounters there may also problematize their sense of belonging. During their summertime visits to Morocco, the European-Moroccan participants in this ethnography repeatedly find themselves negotiating a sense of belonging in the 'homeland'. This book analyzes how these negotiations take place in order to investigate how the categories of 'diasporic' and 'Moroccan' become shaped by the interactional encounters observed. In the setting of Morocco, where trajectories to and from Europe have colored several centuries of history, this book provides a framework to explore how migration and return become incorporated into contemporary 'Moroccanness'.

Beat Film, Beat Writers (EPUB)
Free Download David Stephen Calonne, "Beat Film, Beat Writers "
English | ISBN: 103268917X | 2024 | 226 pages | EPUB | 2 MB
Beat Film, Beat Writers is the first monograph to analyze the films of Christopher Maclaine, Lawrence Jordan, ruth weiss, Ron Rice, Robert Frank, Barbara Rubin, Shirley Clarke, William S. Burroughs, and Joanne Kyger. The book is noteworthy for its emphasis on women filmmakers who have traditionally been excluded from close analysis by film scholars. Beat Film, Beat Writers also explores the ways Beat authors such as Philip Lamantia, Michael McClure, Diane di Prima, Wiliam S. Burroughs, Allen Ginsberg, Jack Kerouac, Peter Orlovsky, Gregory Corso, Joanne Kyger, and others became deeply involved with the film communities of New York and California. The book discusses their roles as both actors and participants in the making of these films and demonstrates how many of the same themes that characterized Beat literature surface in cinema. The anxiety over the possibilities of nuclear war, the search for deeper modes of spirituality in the study of Buddhism as well as occult and esoteric systems, the struggle for equality for the LGBTQ+ community, the beginnings of the ecological movement, and the fight against censorship and the open depiction of sexuality are all themes that occur both in Beat film and in Beat literature.
