Social interactions are rich, complex, and dynamic. One way to understand these is to model interactions that fascinate us. Some of the more realistic and powerful models are computer simulations. Simple, elegant and powerful, tools are available in user-friendly free software to help you design, build and run your own models of social interactions that intrigue you, and do this on the most basic laptop computer. Free Download Michael Laver, "Agent-Based Models of Polarization and Ethnocentrism "
English | ISBN: 1108796400 | 2020 | 94 pages | PDF | 4 MB
Building on the Cambridge Element Agent Based Models of Social Life: Fundamentals (Cambridge, 2020), we move on to the next level. We do this by building agent based models of polarization and ethnocentrism. In the process, we develop: stochastic models, which add a crucial element of uncertainty to human interaction; models of human interactions structured by social networks; and 'evolutionary' models in which agents using more effective decision rules are more likely to survive and prosper than others. The aim is to leave readers with an effective toolkit for building, running and analyzing agent based modes of social interaction.

Free Download Bernard O'Connor, "Agent Rose: The True Spy Story Of Eileen Nearne, Britain's Forgotten Wartime Heroine"
English | ISBN: 1445641453 | 2014 | 256 pages | AZW3 | 895 KB
In September 2010 the body of Eileen Nearne was found in a flat in Torquay. With no known friends or relatives, a council burial was arranged. A police search of her belongings found wartime French currency and wartime medals. Further investigation revealed that she was one of 40 women sent into France by the SOE, the Special Operations Executive, Churchill's top secret wartime 'spook' organisation. Her story and her poignant death as a recluse became an international media sensation. Being fluent in French Eileen, or 'Didi' as she liked to be known, was identified early in the war by the SOE as a potential agent. After spending months training as a wireless operator, coding messages for transmission and decoding those received from agents in the field, she was chosen to be sent into occupied France . She underwent paramilitary training and was assigned the codename 'ROSE'. After working in dangerous conditions in Paris for several months, she was captured, interrogated and tortured. Keeping to her story that she was an unwitting French girl caught up in resistance work, she was transferred to a series of concentration camps in Germany. She made a miraculous escape in early 1945. Eileen had difficulty adjusting to living in post-war Britain. After recovering from a nervous breakdown, she devoted her life to helping others and eventually became a recluse. This is her story.

Free Download Jo Littler, "Against Meritocracy: Culture, power and myths of mobility"
English | ISBN: 1138889555 | 2017 | 236 pages | AZW3 | 1238 KB
Meritocracy today involves the idea that whatever your social position at birth, society ought to offer enough opportunity and mobility for 'talent' to combine with 'effort' in order to 'rise to the top'. This idea is one of the most prevalent social and cultural tropes of our time, as palpable in the speeches of politicians as in popular culture. In this book Jo Littler argues that meritocracy is the key cultural means of legitimation for contemporary neoliberal culture - and that whilst it promises opportunity, it in fact creates new forms of social division.

Free Download Amanda C. Demmer, "After Saigon's Fall: Refugees and US-Vietnamese Relations, 1975-2000 "
English | ISBN: 1108488382 | 2021 | 288 pages | AZW3 | 4 MB
Few historians of the Vietnam War have covered the post-1975 era or engaged comprehensively with refugee politics, humanitarianism, and human rights as defining issues of the period. After Saigon's Fall is the first major work to uncover this history. Amanda C. Demmer offers a new account of the post-War normalization of US-Vietnam relations by centering three major transformations of the late twentieth century: the reassertion of the US Congress in American foreign policy; the Indochinese diaspora and changing domestic and international refugee norms; and the intertwining of humanitarianism and the human rights movement. By tracing these domestic, regional, and global phenomena, After Saigon's Fall captures the contingencies and contradictions inherent in US-Vietnamese normalization. Using previously untapped archives to recover a riveting narrative with both policymakers and nonstate advocates at its center, Demmer's book also reveals much about US politics and society in the last quarter of the twentieth century.
