Michel Foucault, The Courage of Truth and The Ethics of an Intellectual
Free Download Priscila Piazentini Vieira, "Michel Foucault, The Courage of Truth and The Ethics of an Intellectual"
English | ISBN: 3031043553 | 2022 | 196 pages | PDF | 4 MB
The relationship between two distinct periods in Michel Foucault's work is the starting point for this book. In "Truth and Power," an interview Foucault gave in 1976, he states that to create a new politics of truth is an intellectual's main task. In this book, Priscila Piazentini Vieira analyzes Foucault's study on ancient culture and courage of truth in the 1980s as his main contribution to our construction of a new politics of truth, much diverse from modernity's prevailing understanding of it grounded on the will to knowledge. Furthermore, she analyzes Foucault's militant practice and his GIP experience from a corpus constructed by papers, courses, interviews, and books written by the philosopher between the 1970s and 1980s. By clearly linking Foucault's work on to his own militant activity, the book also aims to develop an original definition of the intellectual at the crossroad of political engagement, the production of knowledge, and the manifestation of the truth.

Michael Psellos Rhetoric and Authorship in Byzantium
Free Download Michael Psellos: Rhetoric and Authorship in Byzantium By Stratis Papaioannou
2013 | 347 Pages | ISBN: 1107026229 | PDF | 59 MB
This book explores Michael Psellos' place in the history of Greek rhetoric and self-representation and his impact on the development of Byzantine literature. Avoiding the modern dilemma that vacillates between Psellos the pompous rhetorician and Psellos the ingenious thinker, Professor Papaioannou unravels the often misunderstood Byzantine rhetoric, its rich discursive tradition and the social fabric of elite Constantinopolitan culture which rhetoric addressed. The book offers close readings of Psellos' personal letters, speeches, lectures and historiographical narratives, and analysis of other early Byzantine and classical models of authorship in Byzantine book culture, such as Gregory of Nazianzos, Synesios of Cyrene, Hermogenes and Plato. It also details Psellos' innovative attention to authorial creativity, performative mimesis and the aesthetics of the self. Simultaneously, it traces within Byzantium complex expressions of emotion and gender, notions of authorship and subjectivity, and theories of fictionality and literature, challenging the common fallacy that these are modern inventions.

Metamaterials for Manipulation of Thermal Radiation and Photoluminescence in Near and Far Fields
Free Download Yinhui Kan, "Metamaterials for Manipulation of Thermal Radiation and Photoluminescence in Near and Far Fields"
English | 2022 | ISBN: 9811961271 | PDF | pages: 131 | 5.1 mb
This book provides a series of methods for flexibly and actively manipulating thermal emission and photoluminance by advanced nanostructures―metamaterials. Nanostructures in subwavelength scales can be designed to precisely modulate light-matter interactions and thereby tailoring both thermal radiations and photon emissions. This book explores approaches for designing different kinds of nanostructures, including multilayers, gratings, nanoridges, and waveguides, to improve the flexibility and functionality of micro/nanodevices. With the help of these subwavelength nanostructures, thermal radiation and photoluminescence have been fully manipulated in near and far fields regarding to the intensity, spectrum, polarization, and direction. The proposed methods together with designed metamaterials open new avenues for designing novel micro-/nanodevices or systems for promising applications like thermal energy harvesting, detecting, sensing, and on-chip quantum-optical networks.
