Free Download Matthew Reynolds, "Translation: A Very Short Introduction (Very Short Introductions)"
English | 2016 | pages: 142 | ISBN: 0198712111 | EPUB | 1,9 mb
Translation is everywhere and matters to everybody. Translation doesn't only give us foreign news, dubbed films and instructions for using the microwave: without it, there would be no world religions, and our literatures, our cultures, and our languages would be unrecognizable.

Translating the Monster Volter Kilpi in Orbit Beyond (Un)Translatability
Free Download Douglas Robinson, "Translating the Monster: Volter Kilpi in Orbit Beyond (Un)Translatability "
English | ISBN: 9004519920 | 2022 | 308 pages | PDF | 4 MB
One of the hottest battles emerging out of the theoretical and methodological collisions between Comparative Literature and Translation Studies-especially on the battleground of World Literature-has to do with translatability and untranslatability. Is any translation of a great work of literature not only a lamentable betrayal but an impossibility? Or is translation an imperfect but invaluable tool for the transmission of works and ideas beyond language barriers?

Translanguaging, Coloniality and Decolonial Cracks Bilingual Science Learning in South Africa
Free Download Robyn Tyler, "Translanguaging, Coloniality and Decolonial Cracks: Bilingual Science Learning in South Africa "
English | ISBN: 1800411987 | 2023 | 184 pages | PDF | 5 MB
In this linguistic ethnography of bilingual science learning in a South African high school, the author connects microanalyses of classroom discourse to broader themes of de/coloniality in education. The book challenges the deficit narrative often used to characterise the capabilities of linguistically-minoritised youth, and explores the challenges and opportunities associated with leveraging students' full semiotic repertoires in learning specific concepts. The author examines the linguistic landscape of the school and the beliefs and attitudes of staff and students which produce both coloniality and cracks in the edifice of coloniality. A critical translanguaging lens is applied to analyse multilingual and multimodal aspects of students' science meaning-making in a traditional classroom and a study group intervention. Finally, the book suggests implications for decolonial pedagogical translanguaging in Southern multilingual classrooms.

Translanguaging and Epistemological Decentring in Higher Education and Research
Free Download Heidi Bojsen, "Translanguaging and Epistemological Decentring in Higher Education and Research "
English | ISBN: 1800410891 | 2023 | 288 pages | PDF | 2 MB
Using data from multilingual settings in universities and adjacent learning contexts in East Asia, North Africa, Central and North America and Europe, this book provides examples of the heuristic value of translanguaging and epistemological decentring. Despite this and other theoretical and empirical work, and ever stronger calls for the inclusion of other languages, epistemologies and constructions of culture in higher education, decentring and translanguaging practices are often relegated to the margins or suppressed in research and education because of the organisational structures of education institutions and prevailing language norms, policies and ideologies. The authors draw on research on pluri- and multilingualism within education studies, as well as post- and decolonial theoretical contributions to the research on the role of language in education and knowledge production, to provide evidence that decentring cannot happen until learners have been given the tools to identify which sorts of centring dynamics and conditions are salient to their learning and (trans)languaging.

Translanguaging and English as a Lingua Franca in the Plurilingual Classroom
Free Download Anna Mendoza, "Translanguaging and English as a Lingua Franca in the Plurilingual Classroom "
English | ISBN: 1800413432 | 2023 | 232 pages | PDF | 2 MB
This book explores multilingual practices such as translanguaging, code-switching and stylization in secondary classrooms in Hawai'i. Using linguistic ethnography, it investigates how students in a linguistically diverse class, including those who speak less commonly taught languages, deal with learning tasks and the social life of the class when using these languages alongside English as a lingua franca. It discusses implications for teachers, from balancing student needs in lesson planning and instruction to classroom management, where the language use of one individual or group can create challenges of understanding, participation or deficit identity positionings for another. The book argues that students must not only be allowed to flex their whole language repertoires to learn and communicate but also be aware of how to build bridges across differences in individual repertoires. It offers suggestions for teachers to consider within their own contexts, highlighting the need for teacher autonomy to cultivate the classroom community's critical language awareness and create conducive environments for learning. This book will appeal to postgraduate students, researchers and academics working in the fields of sociolinguistics and linguistic ethnography as well as pre-service and in-service teachers in linguistically diverse secondary school contexts.

Transgender Rights and Politics Groups, Issue Framing, and Policy Adoption
Free Download Transgender Rights and Politics: Groups, Issue Framing, and Policy Adoption By Jami K. Taylor; Donald P. Haider-Markel (eds.)
2014 | 303 Pages | ISBN: 0472052357 | PDF | 11 MB
To date, media and scholarly attention to gay politics and policy has focused on the morality debates over sexual orientation and the legal aspects of rights for non-heterosexuals. However, transgender concerns as such have received little attention. As transgender activism has become more visible, policymakers, both in the United States and around the world, have begun to respond to demands for more equitable treatment.Jami K. Taylor and Donald P. Haider-Markel bring together new research employing the concepts and tools of political science to explore the politics of transgender rights. Volume contributors address the framing of transgender rights in the U.S. and in Latin America. They discuss transgender interest groups, the inclusion of transgender activists in advocacy coalitions, policy diffusion at the state and local levels, and, importantly, the implementation of transgender public policy. This volume sets the standard for empirical research on transgender politics and demonstrates that the study of this topic can contribute to the understanding of larger questions in the field of political science.
