Metric Algebraic Geometry
Free Download Metric Algebraic Geometry
English | 2024 | ISBN: 3031514610 | 225 Pages | PDF (True) | 8 MB
After a short dive into 19th-century geometry of plane curves, we turn to problems expressed by polynomial equations over the real numbers. The solution sets are real algebraic varieties. Many of our metric problems arise in data science, optimization and statistics. These include minimizing Wasserstein distances in machine learning, maximum likelihood estimation, computing curvature, or minimizing the Euclidean distance to a variety.

Methods in Ancient Wine Archaeology Scientific Approaches in Roman Contexts
Free Download Emlyn Dodd, "Methods in Ancient Wine Archaeology: Scientific Approaches in Roman Contexts"
English | ISBN: 1350346640 | 2024 | 336 pages | EPUB/PDF | 15 MB
Bringing together a wide array of modern scientific techniques and interdisciplinary approaches, this book provides an accessible guide to the methods that form the current bedrock of research into Roman, and more broadly ancient, wine. Chapters are arranged into thematic sections, covering biomolecular archaeology and chemical analysis, archaeobotany and palynology, vineyard and landscape archaeology and computational and experimental archaeology. These include discussions of some of the most recent techniques, such as ancient DNA and organic residue analyses, geophysical prospection, multispectral imaging and spatial and climatic modelling. While most of the content is of direct relevance to the Roman Mediterranean, the assortment of detailed case studies, methodological outlines and broader 'state of the field' reflections is of equal use to researchers working across disparate disciplines, geographies, and chronologies.

Methodologies for Conducting Research on Giftedness
Free Download Methodologies for Conducting Research on Giftedness By Bruce Thompson and Rena F. Subotnik (Editors)
2010 | 266 Pages | ISBN: 1433807149 | PDF | 2 MB
The editors envision this volume as a handbook for researchers in psychology and education who target exceptional populations in their work, and particularly individuals exhibiting gifts and talents. The research tools described here can help to move the scholarship on giftedness and talent development to a new level of rigor and encourage the testing of program models, as well as predictive validity of theoretical or conceptual frameworks (see for example Sternberg & Davidson, 2005). Of course, the methods described in these chapters can also be usefully applied in general populations or in studies dealing with specialized subpopulations other than gifted and talented. The scholars who contributed to the first nine chapters of this volume are pioneers in the field of measurement and statistics, and they show us most elegantly how the methodologies they have mastered or developed can apply to samples that, by their nature, make statistical analysis more challenging. We tasked our contributors to address the following four barriers, and one facilitator, associated with gifted education research: Definitions of giftedness and talent are not standardized; Test ceilings can be too low to measure progress or growth; Comparison groups are difficult to find for extraordinary individuals; Participant attrition in longitudinal studies may compromise tests of hypothesized effects; and, Qualitative research conducted with gifted populations can be enhanced due to highly articulate study participants.

Metaphysics of Meditation, The Sri Aurobindo and Adi–Sakara on the Isa Upanisad
Free Download Stephen Phillips, "Metaphysics of Meditation, The: Sri Aurobindo and Adi-Sakara on the Isa Upanisad "
English | ISBN: 1350412414 | 2024 | 248 pages | PDF | 2 MB
In this book Stephen Phillips focuses on one of the most important poems about meditation in world literature, as understood by two of the greatest philosophers of India, one classical, one modern. Sankara's commentaries on the Upanisads are a core of the Vedanta tradition and Aurobindo is a towering figure of 20th-century Hindu thought. This is the first time their approaches have been studied together. The Isa (c. 500 BCE) an "Upanisad" belongs to a genre of "adhyatmika" learning-concerning self and consciousness-in early Indian literature. According to the Ancient Indian tradition of yoga, meditation is antithetical to willful bodily and mental action. Breathing is all you do. In the conception of the Isa Upanisad,we are told that the best that comes from meditation is because of what the "Lord" is. In Sankara's interpretation it comes to block out the little "you," whereas according to Aurobindo it comes as a divine connection, an occult "Conscious Force" belonging to truer part of oneself,

Metaphysics and Ontology Without Myths
Free Download Fabio Bacchini, "Metaphysics and Ontology Without Myths"
English | ISBN: 1443863912 | 2014 | 190 pages | PDF | 1015 KB
Metaphysics and ontology feature among the traditional and fundamental concerns of philosophers. Gaining a picture of the world and the kind of objects that exist out there is for most philosophers (past and present) a preliminary aim upon which other theoretical activities depend. In fact, it seems that sound conclusions on topics relevant to ethics, aesthetics, psychology, and common and scientific knowledge can be achieved only after one has been given a picture of that sort. What is worth stressing, though, is that from time to time the tribunal of history has managed to put its finger on some flawed conclusions. To take a time-worn example, who would now accept Plato's claim that the spatiotemporal world is just an imperfect copy of a world of abstract objects conceived of as perfect unchanging models of concrete things? The picture Plato gave us is nothing but a myth-an account which is too far away from what common sense and science could accept, too detached from the usual ways of conducting a rational discussion. Therefore, pictures of this kind appear to be supported by nothing but dogmas, i.e. uncompromising principles taken as true without any previous critical analysis. And Plato has no shortage of company. Issues of this kind revolving around metaphysics and ontology are tackled in the essays in this volume, which approach a secular debate in fresh and original ways, providing the necessary tools for clearing the field of unpalatable metaphysical and ontological items.

Metaphysical Song An Essay on Opera
Free Download Metaphysical Song: An Essay on Opera By Gary Tomlinson
1999 | 192 Pages | ISBN: 0691004080 | PDF | 21 MB
In this bold recasting of operatic history, Gary Tomlinson connects opera to shifting visions of metaphysics and selfhood across the last four hundred years. The operatic voice, he maintains, has always acted to open invisible, supersensible realms to the perceptions of its listeners. In doing so, it has articulated changing relations between the self and metaphysics. Tomlinson examines these relations as they have been described by philosophers from Ficino through Descartes, Kant, and Nietzsche, to Adorno, all of whom worked to define the subject's place in both material and metaphysical realms. The author then shows how opera, in its own cultural arena, distinct from philosophy, has repeatedly brought to the stage these changing relations of the subject to the particular metaphysics it presumes.Covering composers from Jacopo Peri to Wagner, from Lully to Verdi, and from Mozart to Britten, Metaphysical Song details interactions of song, words, drama, and sounds used by creators of opera to fill in the outlines of the subjectivities they envisioned. The book offers deep-seated explanations for opera's enduring fascination in European elite culture and suggests some of the profound difficulties that have unsettled this fascination since the time of Wagner.
