Hurricane Hazel Canada's Storm of the Century
Free Download Hurricane Hazel: Canada's Storm of the Century By Jim Gifford
2004 | 104 Pages | ISBN: 1550025260 | EPUB | 16 MB
On October 15, 1954, Hurricane Hazel battered southern Ontario, leaving in its wake a terrible toll: thousands homeless, million in property damage, and, worst of all, 81 people dead. Hazel destroyed bridges, submerged towns, and drowned unsuspecting Ontarians in their homes and cars. Raymore Drive in Weston was decimated when the Humber River swelled by eight feet, taking the lives of 32 residents in only one hour. In Etobicoke, five volunteer firemen drowned while trying to reach marooned motorists. Towns and villages from Toronto north to Timmins felt Hazel's fury. After the storm, people walked the now-surreal streets of their towns: cars upside-down and wrapped in power lines, iceboxes and dead cows hanging from trees, houses flattened, toys and furniture floating down the street. On the 50th anniversary of the storm, Jim Gifford has captured that fatal night in the voices of those who survived it, from residents who lived along the surging Humber River to a policeman who rescued families from their rooftops to firemen and Boy Scouts who searched for victims along the riverbanks. Including more than 100 never-before-published photographs, Hurricane Hazel: Canada's Storm of the Century documents one of the worst natural disasters in Canadian history.

Hunt for the Shadow Wolf The lost history of wolves in Britain and the myths and stories that surround them
Free Download Hunt for the Shadow Wolf: The lost history of wolves in Britain and the myths and stories that surround them by Derek Gow
English | March 7, 2024 | ISBN: 1915294460 | True EPUB | 256 pages | 20 MB
Renowned rewilder Derek Gow has a dream: that one day we will see the return of the wolf to Britain as it has already returned elsewhere. As Derek worked to reintroduce the beaver, he began to hear stories of the wolf, both real and mythical, and his fascination with this creature grew. With increasing curiosity, Derek started to piece together fragments of information, stories and artefacts to reveal a shadowy creature that first walked proud through these lands and then was hunted to extinction as coexistence turned to fear, hatred - and domination.

Humean Bodies and their Consequences
Free Download Humean Bodies and their Consequences
English | 2024 | ISBN: 3031507983 | 203 Pages | PDF EPUB (True) | 4 MB
This book defends the very contentious Idealist interpretation of Hume on external objects, and draws from it far-reaching metaphysical and epistemological consequences for Hume's philosophy. Its interest is both interpretive and analytic. The content Hume ascribes to the belief in "bodies" is susceptible to more than one reading, and has not been systematically considered. Upholding the Idealistic interpretation is interesting in its own right, but also yields several important conclusions about the spatiality of objects, causation, Hume's "science of man" and his epistemology. For instance, it argues that the Idealist reading means that there are no cross-temporal spatial relationships, and that the (more prevalent) Materialist reading takes Hume further away from methodological empiricism than does the Idealist counterpart, and may render his practice less in conformity with his official methodology. The monograph is therefore of great interest to not only academics but also scholars, graduate students and researchers.

Humboldts Albtraum. Der Bologna–Prozess und seine Folgen
Free Download Humboldts Albtraum. Der Bologna-Prozess und seine Folgen By Franz Schultheis, Paul-Frantz Cousin, Marta Roca i Escoda (Hrsg.)
2008 | 202 Pages | ISBN: 3744501264 | PDF | 8 MB

Human Dignity Eleven Defenders of Human Rights at Close Range
Free Download Arne Peter Braaksma, "Human Dignity: Eleven Defenders of Human Rights at Close Range"
English | 2015 | pages: 370 | ISBN: 9491833251 | EPUB | 3,2 mb
HUMAN DIGNITY Eleven Human Rights Defenders at Close Range "You must be the change you wish to see in the world" Human Dignity takes you around the world, presenting the stories of eleven human rights defenders who act in the spirit of Gandhi's motto: "You must be the change you wish to see in the world." Each of them has become a focal point of fighting human rights violations such as land theft, discrimination, the withholding of health services, dictatorship, environmental destruction, and global warming. The stories of these remarkable men and women reveal the challenges and struggles facing those who speak truth to power. It would be hard not to be inspired by their resilience in trying to create a better world. Human Dignity is the sequel to the successful Nine Lives: Making the Impossible Possible (New Internationalist, Oxford 2009) by the same author, which portrays nine other human rights defenders. Arne Peter Braaksma has worked as an editor in the UK and as a journalist in the Netherlands, focusing on human rights, the environment and corporate social responsibility. Contributors: Rebiya Kadeer (East Turkestan / Uyghur), Soe Myint (Burma), Martin Macwan (India), Khassan Baiev (Chechnya), Aminatou Haidar (Western Sahara), Samuel Kofi Woods (Liberia), Vuyiseka Dubula (South Africa), Maria Gunnoe (United States), Pablo Fajardo (Ecuador), Liliana Ortega (Venezuela), Sheila Watt-Cloutier (Nunavut)
