Architecture as City Saemangeum Island City
Free Download Philip Christou Philip, Christou Florian Beigel, "Architecture as City: Saemangeum Island City"
English | 2010 | pages: 141 | ISBN: 3709103673 | PDF | 23,5 mb
Book by Florian Beigel and Philip Christou, with contributions by Dominique Boudet (Consultant Editor), photo essay by Kang Woon-gu, and conversation with Ellis Woodman. Florian Beigel and the Architecture Research Unit were invited by the Provincial Government of Jeollabukdo, Korea in 2008, along with seven other teams to participate in an international ideas competition to develop urban design proposals for the Saemangeum land reclamation project. Saemangeum Island City comprises a surface area of some 400 km, more than a quater of the area of Greater London (which is approx. 1.570 km ). In late 2008, the design project by ARU / London Metropolitan University was declared one of three winning competition proposals (along with Columbia University and Massachusetts Institute of Technology). Kazuyo Sejima, Director of the 12th Architecture Biennale, has selected the ARU project to be part of the main exhibition in Venice 2010. The urban land-use concept plan begins with a phased landscape infrastructure design of 8 new islands with a highly remarkable solution as to environmental issues. This book offers a unique and timely approach to contemporary urban design research and practice.

Archaeological Perspectives on Conflict and Warfare in Australia and the Pacific (Terra Australis)
Free Download Archaeological Perspectives on Conflict and Warfare in Australia and the Pacific (Terra Australis) by Geoffrey Clark, Mirani Litster
English | March 8, 2022 | ISBN: 1760464880 | 282 pages | EPUB | 22 Mb
When James Boswell famously lamented the irrationality of war in 1777, he noted the universality of conflict across history and across space - even reaching what he described as the gentle and benign southern ocean nations. This volume discusses archaeological evidence of conflict from those southern oceans, from Palau and Guam, to Australia, Vanuatu and Tonga, the Marquesas, Easter Island and New Zealand. The evidence for conflict and warfare encompasses defensive earthworks on Palau, fortifications on Tonga, and intricate pa sites in New Zealand. It reports evidence of reciprocal sacrifice to appease deities in several island nations, and skirmishes and smaller scale conflicts, including in Easter Island. This volume traces aspects of colonial-era conflict in Australia and frontier battles in Vanuatu, and discusses depictions of World War II materiel in the rock art of Arnhem Land. Among the causes and motives discussed in these papers are pressure on resources, the ebb and flow of significant climate events, and the significant association of conflict with culture contact. The volume, necessarily selective, eclectic and wide-ranging, includes an incisive introduction that situates the evidence persuasively in the broader scholarship addressing the history of human warfare.

Archaeological Ambassadors
Free Download Archaeological Ambassadors: A History of Archaeological Gifts in New York City
English | 2024 | ISBN: 3031513908 | 286 Pages | PDF EPUB (True) | 20 MB
This book investigates why nations with rich archaeological pasts like Egypt, Greece, and Jordan gave important antiquities―often unique, rare, and highly valued monuments―to New York City, New York Institutions, and the United States from 1879 to 1965. In addition to analyzing the givers' motivations, the author examines why New Yorkers and Americans coveted such objects. The book argues that these gifted antiquities function as archaeological ambassadors and that the objects given were instruments of cultural diplomacy. These gifts sought to advance the goals of Egypt, Greece, and Jordan―all states that had rich cultural and archaeological heritages―with the United States, once an ascendent nation and then a global superpower, to strengthen cultural, economic, and political relations.

English | ISBN: 1474435785 | 2024 | 248 pages | PDF | 11 MB
From the exaggerated emotions of 1930s Egyptian melodrama to the cryptic allegories of late 20th-century Palestinian cinema, Arab World Cinemas guides you through 28 Arabic-language feature films released between 1933 and 2021, including Muhammad Khan's 'Dreams of Hind and Camilia' (1989), Moufida Tlatli's 'Silences of the Palace' (1994) and Elia Suleiman's 'Divine Intervention' (2002). Written specially for students, the book is split into 3 parts: Egypt, North Africa and the eastern Arab world. Each part begins with an introductory essay that highlights the aesthetic and socio-historical trends and currents in the cinematic traditions particular to that region. Marlé Hammond then dedicates individual chapters to a group of films from the highlighted region, interpreting their form and content through the lenses of cinematic technique and concepts drawn from various disciplines in the arts, humanities and social sciences.
