Muslim Becoming Aspiration and Skepticism in Pakistan
Free Download Muslim Becoming: Aspiration and Skepticism in Pakistan By Naveeda Khan
2012 | 280 Pages | ISBN: 0822352176 | PDF | 1 MB
InMuslim Becoming, Naveeda Khan challenges the claim that Pakistan's relation to Islam is fragmented and problematic. Offering a radically different interpretation, Khan contends that Pakistan inherited an aspirational, always-becoming Islam, one with an open future and a tendency toward experimentation. For the individual, this aspirational tendency manifests in a continual striving to be a better Muslim. It is grounded in the thought of Muhammad Iqbal (1877-1938), the poet, philosopher, and politician considered the spiritual founder of Pakistan. Khan finds that Iqbal provided the philosophical basis for recasting Islam as an open religion with possible futures as yet unrealized, which he did in part through his engagement with the French philosopher Henri Bergson. Drawing on ethnographic research in the neighborhoods and mosques of Lahore and on readings of theological polemics, legal history, and Urdu literature, Khan points to striving throughout Pakistani society: in prayers and theological debates and in the building of mosques, readings of the Qur'an, and the undertaking of religious pilgrimages. At the same time, she emphasizes the streak of skepticism toward the practices of others that accompanies aspiration. She asks us to consider what is involved in affirming aspiration while acknowledging its capacity for violence.

Musicology and Performance
Free Download Musicology and Performance By Paul Henry Lang, Alfred Mann (editor), George J. Buelow (editor)
1997 | 254 Pages | ISBN: 0300068050 | PDF | 22 MB
Arriving in the United States at age twenty-seven, Hungarian-born Paul Henry Lang (1901-1991) went on to exert a powerful influence on musical life and scholarship in his adopted country for more than six decades. As professor of musicology at Columbia University, editor of the Musical Quarterly, a founder of the American Musicological Society, and chief music critic of the New York Herald Tribune, Lang became one of Americas foremost musical scholars and commentators. This anthology of his previously uncollected writings includes essays written throughout his career on a full array of musical subjects, as well as unpublished chapters of the book on performance practice that he was writing at the time of his death.Lang was concerned above all with safeguarding the purity of musical knowledge as reflected in both scholarship and performance. Whether addressing his fellow musicologists or the general public, he expressed a broadly humanistic conception of musicology in his erudite and entertaining writings on such diverse subjects as Bach and Handel, the historical veracity of the film Amadeus, Marxist theory and music, and the controversial issue ofauthenticity in performance.

Music in the Theater Essays on Verdi and Other Composers
Free Download Music in the Theater: Essays on Verdi and Other Composers By Pierluigi Petrobelli
1995 | 203 Pages | ISBN: 0691027102 | PDF | 16 MB
Well known for having generated new interest in Verdi as a subtle and elaborate musical thinker, Pierluigi Petrobelli offers here lively, penetrating explanations of how music in the theater works: Why is it that only a few operas constitute the standard repertory of all opera houses throughout the world, to the constant delight of their audiences? What makes these operas as effective today as they were at the time of their creation? Is there a governing principle in their organization and structure? In this collection of essays, most of which appear in English for the first time, Petrobelli answers these questions by presenting historical facts and analyzing specific operas, mainly by Verdi, in terms of musical organization and dramaturgical conventions. From the exploration of clearly detectable stylistic models - Rossini's Mose for Verdi's Nabucco, and the first act finale of Don Giovanni for the opening scene of Rigoletto - the essays move to the study of Verdi's compositional process as revealed by the sketches for Alzira, I due Foscari, and Rigoletto. Unifying musical devices are discussed in essays on Il trovatore and Macbeth. Using Aida and La forvza del destino, Petrobelli builds toward a theory based on three elements of communication within opera: the dramatic structure, the libretto and its metrical arrangement, and the score. The volume culminates with the application of these analytic tools to the opening of Gluck's Alceste and the making of Bellini's I puritani.

Music and Minorities from Around the World Research, Documentation and Interdisciplinary Study
Free Download Ursula Hemetek, "Music and Minorities from Around the World: Research, Documentation and Interdisciplinary Study"
English | ISBN: 1443866202 | 2014 | 230 pages | PDF | 2 MB
The acceleration of mobility among the world's peoples, the growth of populations resettling in places other than their homelands, and world events that have propelled these developments have brought minorities unprecedented attention. Their significance as subjects for study has grown correspondingly and the study of their music has become an important gateway into understanding the culture of minorities. The Study Group for Music and Minorities, part of the International Council for Traditional Music, has seen a steady increase in membership since its inception in 1998 - evidence of the growing interest in minorities worldwide. The Group meets every two years in different parts of the world, and every meeting has resulted in a published volume of papers presented at the meeting. As has been the case in previous volumes where the interests of the host country are well-represented, the current volume attends to Jewish themes, with the meeting from which the volume derives having taken place in Israel. Geographically, the book's subjects and authors come from four continents, emphasizing the global scope of music and minorities. The methodological approaches used in this volume range from musical analysis in the educational context to the cultural studies approach. In both subject matter and perspective, therefore, this book represents the broad range of modern ethnomusicology today.
