Rome's wealth of history also captured the imagination of the ancients. Livy's Written Rome, by Mary Jaeger, shows how one writer explored the relationship between events in Roman history, the landscape in which they occurred, and the monuments that commemorated them. While Augustus reconstructed the physical city to reflect the ideology of the Empire, the historian Livy created a written Rome and taught his readers to look beyond the city's dramatically altered landscape. In so doing, they gained insight into the lessons of the lost Republic. Drawing upon modern discourse on the connection between private mental spaces and public civic spaces, this first in-depth study of Livy's use of the urban landscape offers discerning views on his interpretation of ancient theories of historiography. Livy's Written Rome discusses the Roman idea of the monument as a place where memory and space intersect and includes fresh readings of several historical episodes, including the battle over the Sabine Women, the sedition of Marcus Manlius, and the trials of the Scipios. Scholars have long criticized Livy as a historian because his work is not in accord with modern historiographical standards. Yet even his critics agree that Livy is a masterful literary artist, and recent work on Livy has argued for the complexity and originality of his thought. Across the humanities, recent scholarship has focused on the role of memory in civic consciousness and identity. This book explores the ways in which Livy's texts question traditional assumptions about the preservation and use of the past. In doing so, it identifies a new and important facet of Livy's representation of urban Rome. Livy's Written Rome will be of interest to classicists and historians, students of ancient historiography and classical rhetoric, as well as general readers interested in memory, monuments, and historical narrative. Mary Jaeger is Professor of Classics, University of Oregon. ![]() Free Download Livy: The Composition of His History by Torrey James Luce English | 2019 | ISBN: 0691656266 | 352 Pages | PDF | 8.5 MB Professor Luce considers to what extent Livy may be said to have been in control of his historical material. ![]() Free Download Living Well in a Down Economy For Dummies (For Dummies-Business & Personal Finance) by The Experts at For Dummies English | February 7, 2023 | ISBN: 1394159641 | 464 pages | MOBI | 0.89 Mb As the economic pendulum swings, it's time to start living smart ![]() Free Download Fran McCullough, "Living Low-Carb: The Complete Guide to Long Term Low-Carb Dieting" English | 2003 | pages: 384 | ISBN: 0316089761 | EPUB | 0,3 mb Here are tips, tricks, and practical advice for dealing with issues that these dieters face every day: How to eat to maintain weight loss, the best way to deal with eating binges, what to do when dining out or facing temptations during the holidays, the safest times of day to eat high-carb foods, McCullough also provides information on new low-carb products, "secret weapons", mail-order sources, vitamin supplements, the use of "healthy fats" in cooking, and effective bounceback programs from periods of indulgence - as well as 165 delicious recipes that never seem like a sacrifice. ![]() Free Download Catharine Fishel, Stacey King Gordon, "Little Book of Big Packaging Ideas" English | 2007 | pages: 354 | ISBN: 1592533531 | PDF | 97,2 mb A volume "packed" with insight and ideas ![]() Free Download Literature and Medicine English | 2024 | ISBN: 1009300067 | 405 Pages | PDF | 5 MB The experiences of health and illness, death and dying, the normal and the pathological have always been an integral part of literary texts. This volume considers how the two dynamic fields of medicine and literature have crossed over, and how they have developed alongside one another. It asks how medicine, as both science and practice, shapes the representation of illness and transforms literary form. It considers how literary texts across genres and languages of disease have put forward specific conceptions of medicine and impacted its practice. Taking into account the global, multilingual and multicultural contexts, this volume systematically outlines and addresses this double-sidedness of the literature-medicine connection. Literature and Medicine covers a broad spectrum of conceptual, thematic, theoretical, and methodological approaches that provide a solid foundation for understanding a vibrant interdisciplinary field. ![]() Free Download Literary Subterfuge and Contemporary Persian Fiction: Who Writes Iran? By Mohammad Mehdi Khorrami 2014 | 262 Pages | ISBN: 2014009244 | PDF | 4 MB The main focus of Literary Subterfuge and Contemporary Persian Fiction is to identify components and elements which define Persian modernist fiction, placing an emphasis on literary concepts and devices which provide the dynamics of the evolutionary trajectory of this modernism. The question of 'who writes Iran' refers to a contested area which goes beyond the discipline of literary criticism. Non-literary discourses have made every effort to impose their "committed" readings on literary texts; they have even managed to exert influence on the process of literary creation. In this process, inevitably, many works, or segments of them, and many concepts which do not lend themselves to such readings have been ignored; at the same time, many of them have been appropriated by these discourses. Yet components and elements of Persian literary tradition have persistently engaged in this discursive confrontation, mainly by insisting on literature's relative autonomy, so that at least concepts such as conformity and subterfuge, essential in terms of defining modern and modernist Persian fiction, could be defined in a literary manner.Proffering an alternative in terms of literary historiography; this book supports a methodological approach that considers literary narratives which occur in the margins of dominant discourses, and indeed promote non-discursivity, as the main writers of Persian modernist fiction. It is an essential resource for scholars and researchers interested in Persian and comparative literature, as well as Middle Eastern Studies more broadly. |
