Clean Energy Nation Freeing America from the Tyranny of Fossil Fuels
Free Download Clean Energy Nation: Freeing America from the Tyranny of Fossil Fuels
English | 2012 | ISBN: 0814413722 | 321 Pages | EPUB (True) | 7.5 MB
In the vein of "An Inconvenient Truth," a sobering assessment of our nation's energy policies and a stirring call for change. Dangerous CO2 emissions, massive oil spills, dwindling supplies-the problems with fossil fuels are driving a long-overdue reassessment of our nation's energy policies. U.S. Congressman Jerry McNerney, a renewable energy engineer and the first representative with expertise in energy independence, leads the way to change. In Clean Energy Nation, he and journalist Martin Cheek make an impassioned argument for drastically reducing dependency on fossil fuels and developing sustainable, readily available energy sources-solar, wind, biofuel, geothermal, and hydrogen-based power. Bringing together a rare combination of scientific knowledge, political savvy, and insightful journalism, the authors reveal the pros and cons of alternative energy sources and examine how our nation became addicted to fossil fuels in the first place. The book reads like the dramatic story it is, complete with dire projections about peak oil and grim scenarios of rising oceans...keen insights into policies and players that have stalled progress on climate change and favored big oil...and astute recommendations for building a clean energy economy and a prosperous, stable future.

City Fictions Language, Body, and Spanish American Urban Space
Free Download Amanda Holmes, "City Fictions: Language, Body, and Spanish American Urban Space"
English | 2007 | pages: 212 | ISBN: 0838756735 | PDF | 2,8 mb
Using concepts from urban and cultural studies, City Fictions examines the representation of the city in the works of five important late-twentieth-century Spanish American authors, Octavio Paz, Julio Cortazar, Christina Peri Rossi, Diamela Eltit, and Carlos Monsavais. While each of these authors is influenced at least partially by a specific Spanish American city, be it Mexico City, Buenos Aires, Montevideo, or Santiago, the element that brings them together is the way in which the city is fictionalized in their work: they all equate both language and the body with urban space. In these metaphors, language breaks down and the body disintegrates, creating a disturbing picture of violent decline. The poetry of Paz associates the urban surroundings with dissolving sentences and desensitized, fingertips; for Cortazar, characters walking through cities are seen as both creating and unraveling written texts;

Cities with Slums From Informal Settlement Eradication to a Right to the City in Africa
Free Download Marie Huchzermeyer, "Cities with Slums: From Informal Settlement Eradication to a Right to the City in Africa"
English | 2011 | pages: 305 | ISBN: 1919895396 | PDF | 15,4 mb
The UN's Cities without Slums Campaign, which aimed to improve the lives of 100 million "slum" dwellers, has been inappropriately communicated across Africa as a project to eradicate slums and this book explains how current urban policy encourages this interpretation which has led to conflicts between urban residents and local and national authorities. It argues that the right to the city, in its original conception, has direct relevance for urban contestations in Africa today.

Circularity in Textiles
Free Download Circularity in Textiles (Textile Science and Clothing Technology)
English | 2023 | ISBN: 3031494784 | 499 Pages | PDF EPUB (True) | 33 MB
This book explains the basic principles of recycling and circularity in textiles. With the emergence of "quick fashion," textile manufacturing has expanded significantly over the past few decades. The importance of textiles to human society goes beyond their practical uses in providing warmth, protection, and comfort. Therefore, the usage and production of textiles are enhanced substantially compared to the past globally. As a result, rates of textile production and trash output have grown drastically. The other side of the story is the drastic rate at which they are dumped into landfills which is almost a garbage truck every second. If this alarming trend continues, there will be serious environmental consequences. It is well known that the textile sector is recognized as the second largest industrial polluter in the world, producing 20% of the global wastewater and accounting for 10% of carbon emissions. Additionally, harmful chemicals are utilized and emitted during the manufacture of textiles, which has an impact on ecosystems and public health The last 150 years of the textile industrial system fundamentally follow the "take-make-dispose" principle, in which resources are continuously taken out of a natural system (take), changed during production (make), and used for various purposes within the human system (use), and then released back into the environment (dispose of). In this way, manufacturing industries produce waste-producing commodities to make money, which eventually has a negative impact leading to the lack of resources resulting in price volatility, uncertainty, and economic crises. This book consists of 11 potential chapters to cover all the aspects of "circularity in textiles."

Churchill's Navy The Ships, Men and Organization, 1939–1945 (2024)
Free Download Brian Lavery - Churchill's Navy: The Ships, Men and Organization, 1939-1945
Conway | 2006 | ISBN: 1844860353 | English | 291 pages | PDF | 250.9 MB
The history of the Royal Navy during the Second World War is an epic story of heroism and defiance, of stinging defeats but glorious triumphs. Typically books tend to concentrate on the battle history of the navy, and of course this book also examines this topic from convoys to amphibious war, from submarine operations to the last gunnery battles in the Atlantic. But it also looks at the ships themselves, recruitment, and the life and career paths of the officers that commanded and the men and women who served, the technical developments that influenced operations and tactics. It details the composition of the surface and submarine navy from the smallest torpedo boat to the massive battleships and aircraft carriers. This work will provide the most comprehensive assessment of all aspects of Churchill's Navy.

Chronicle of a Plague, Revisited AIDS and Its Aftermath
Free Download Andrew Holleran, "Chronicle of a Plague, Revisited: AIDS and Its Aftermath"
English | 2008 | pages: 264 | ISBN: 0786720395 | EPUB | 0,6 mb
Andrew Holleran's Ground Zero, first published in 1988 and consisting of 23 Christopher Street essays from the earliest years of the AIDS crisis, was hailed by the Washington Post as "one of the best dispatches from the epidemic's height." Twenty years later, with HIV/AIDS long recognized as a global health challenge, Holleran both reiterates and freshly illuminates the devastation wreaked by AIDS, which has claimed the lives of 450,000 gay men as well as 22 million others. Chronicle of a Plague, Revisited features ten pieces never previously republished outside Christopher Street, as well as a new introduction keenly describing and evaluating a historical moment that still informs and defines today's world-particularly its community of homosexuals, which, arguably, is still recovering from the devastation of AIDS.
