Der Begriff Word-of-Mouth (WoM) beschreibt die unmittelbare Kommunikation zwischen verschiedenen Gesprächsgruppen, bei der ein intensiver Kontakt entsteht. Im Marketing wird WoM als Konversation über ein Produkt bzw. eine Marke oder eine Dienstleistung verstanden. Mit Unterstützung der Techniker Krankenkasse untersucht die Fachhochschule Kiel in einer empirischen Studie das Entstehen und die Wirkung von WoM im Rahmen der Entscheidungsprozesse bei der Wahl und dem Wechsel der Krankenkasse. Wahltarife, z. B. mit Selbstbehalt, wurden als Modellvorhaben bereits 2002 getestet. Die Zahl der Nutzer ist derzeit jedoch noch gering, obwohl bislang bereits zwei Drittel der Befragten davon Kenntnis genommen haben. Eine weitere empirische Studie fokussiert daher die Wahrnehmungen und Reaktionen von Mitgliedern gesetzlicher Krankenkassen hinsichtlich der Leistungsvariationen bei Wahltarifen. Sie erläutert Fragen nach der Akzeptanz und Attraktivität von Wahltarifen und hinterfragt aus Sicht der Krankenkassen, wer von Werbemaßnahmen angesprochen werden kann bzw. welchen Nutzen Wahltarife für die Versicherer bieten.
