Kingship and Polity on the Himalayan Borderland Rajput Identity during the Early Colonial Encounter
Free Download Arik Moran, Willem van Schendel, Tina Harris, "Kingship and Polity on the Himalayan Borderland: Rajput Identity during the Early Colonial Encounter"
English | 2019 | pages: 249 | ISBN: 946298560X | PDF | 2,9 mb
Kingship and Polity on the Himalayan Borderland explores the modern transformation of state and society in the Indian Himalaya. Centred on three Rajput led-kingdoms during the transition to British rule (c. 1790-1840) and their interconnected histories, it demonstrates how border making practices engendered a modern reading of 'tradition' that informs communal identities to this day. Countering the common depiction of these states as all-male, caste-exclusive entities, it reveals the strong familial base of Rajput polity, wherein women ― and regent queens in particular ― played a key role alongside numerous non-Rajput groups. Drawing on rich archival records, rarely examined local histories, and nearly two decades of ethnographic research, it offers an alternative to the popular and scholarly discourses that developed with the rise of colonial knowledge. The analysis exposes the cardinal contribution of borderland spaces to the fabrication of group identities. This book will interest historians and anthropologists of South Asia and of the Himalaya, as well as scholars working on postcolonialism, gender, and historiography.

Keynes's Economic Consequences of the Peace after 100 Years Polemics and Policy
Free Download Keynes's Economic Consequences of the Peace after 100 Years: Polemics and Policy
English | 2023 | ISBN: 1009407511 | 667 Pages | PDF | 10 MB
The Economic Consequences of the Peace is one of the most famous books in the history of economic thought. It is also one of the most polemical. Published as a response to what Keynes saw as the grave errors of the Treaty of Versailles, the book predicted that war reparations and other harsh terms imposed on Germany would lead to its collapse, which in turn would lead to devastating consequences for Europe and the wider world. Predictions that we now know to have been all too accurate. Keynes's Economic Consequences of the Peace after 100 Years brings together an international team of experts to assess the legacy of Keynes's best-selling work. It compiles a series of wide-ranging chapters, exploring the varied influence of his ideas and policy contributions. Written in an accessible style, it recovers the importance of this history and examines the continued relevance of Keynes's controversial book.

Ken Williams A Slugger in Ruth's Shadow
Free Download Dave Heller, "Ken Williams: A Slugger in Ruth's Shadow"
English | 2017 | pages: 280 | ISBN: 1476665354 | EPUB | 9,0 mb
Perhaps familiar today as an answer to sports trivia questions, Ken Williams (1890-1959) was once a celebrity who helped bring about a new kind of power baseball in the 1920s. One of the great sluggers of his era (and of all time), he beat Babe Ruth for the home run title in 1922, and became the first to hit 30 home runs and steal 30 bases in a season that year. Later recognized for his accomplishments, he was considered for but not inducted into the Hall of Fame. This first-ever biography of Williams covers his life and career, from his small town upbringing, to his unlikely foray into pro baseball, to his retirement years, when he served as a police officer and ran a pool hall in his hometown.

Keeping Faith with the Constitution (Inalienable Rights)
Free Download Pamela S. Karlan, Christopher H. Schroeder, "Keeping Faith with the Constitution (Inalienable Rights)"
English | 2010 | pages: 272 | ISBN: 0199738777 | EPUB | 1,8 mb
Chief Justice John Marshall argued that a constitution "requires that only its great outlines should be marked [and] its important objects designated." Ours is "intended to endure for ages to come, and consequently, to be adapted to the various crises of human affairs." In recent years, Marshall's great truths have been challenged by proponents of originalism and strict construction. Such legal thinkers as Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia argue that the Constitution must be construed and applied as it was when the Framers wrote it.

Kate Chopin and the City The New Orleans Stories
Free Download Kate Chopin and the City: The New Orleans Stories
English | 2024 | ISBN: 3031442997 | 253 Pages | PDF EPUB (True) | 2 MB
This book examines selected short stories and novels by Kate Chopin through the lens of the city of New Orleans. Chopin's depictions of and references to New Orleans celebrate the vibrancy of this unique American city, but also illustrate the complex, interdependent relationships defined within its coded system of racial, gendered, and class designations. These stories feature canny depictions of the complexity of human struggles for freedom as well as love within this nineteenth-century southern city. While Chopin has been highly regarded as a local color writer and especially as a feminist literary icon, this book shows how the author's "city" stories also point to her sophistication as an author who perceived the shifting literary landscape, and it identifies the ways many of these stories' protomodernist elements anticipate the advent of the Modern era.
