The Claims of Parenting Reasons, Responsibility and Society
Free Download Judith Suissa, "The Claims of Parenting: Reasons, Responsibility and Society (Contemporary Philosophies and Theories in Education, 4)"
English | 2012 | pages: 172 | ISBN: 9400736975, 9400722508 | PDF | 0,8 mb
Many sociological, historical and cultural stories can be and have already been told about why it is that parents in post-industrial, western societies face an often overwhelming array of advice on how to bring up their children. At the same time, there have been several philosophical treatments of the legal, moral and political issues surrounding issues of procreation, the rights of children and the duties of parents, as well as some philosophical accounts of the shifts in our underlying conceptualization of childhood and adult-child relationships. While this book partly builds on the insights of this literature, it is significantly different in that it offers a philosophically-informed discussion of the actual practical experience of being a parent, with its deliberations, judgements and dilemmas. In probing the ethical and conceptual questions suggested by the parent-child relationship, this unique volume demonstrates the irreducible philosophical richness of this relationship and thus provides an important counter-balance to the overly empirical and largely psychological focus of a great deal of "parenting" literature. Unlike other analytic work on the parent-child relationship and the educational role of parents, this work draws on first-person accounts of the day-to-day experience of being a parent in order to explore the ethical and epistemological aspects of this experience. In so doing it exposes the limitations of some of the languages within which contemporary "parenting" is conceptualized and discussed, and opens up a space for thinking about childrearing and the parent-child relationship beyond and other than in terms of the languages which dominate the ways in which we generally think about it today.

The Christmas Match Football in No Man's Land 1914
Free Download Pehr Thermaenius, "The Christmas Match: Football in No Man's Land 1914"
English | 2015 | pages: 224 | ISBN: 1910500011 | EPUB | 6,0 mb
On Christmas Eve, 1914, after four months of intense, bloody fighting in Flanders between entrenched British and German soldiers, something miraculous happened. The guns fell silent as Christmas approached, and the soldiers on both sides started singing instead of shooting. Then, on Christmas Day, the two sides emerged from their trenches and met in No Man's Land. Some chased rabbits. Others, more memorably, played soccer. It was a rare moment of peace-and even beauty-amid horrible carnage.

The Calculus of Life Towards a Theory of Life
Free Download The Calculus of Life: Towards a Theory of Life by Andrés Moya
English | PDF (True) | 2015 | 100 Pages | ISBN : 3319169696 | 1 MB
This book explores the exciting world of theoretical biology and is divided into three sections. The first section examines the roles played by renowned scientists such as Jacob, Monod, Rosen, Turing, von Bertalanffy, Waddington and Woodger in developing the field of theoretical biology. The second section, aided with numerous examples, supports the idea that logic and computing are suitable formal languages to describe and understand biological phenomena. The third and final section is, without doubt, the most intellectually challenging and endeavors to show the possible paths we could take to compute a cell - the basic unit of life - or the conditions required for a predictive theory of biological evolution; ultimately, a theory of life in the light of modern Systems Biology. The work aims to show that modern biology is closer than ever to making Goethe's dream come true and that we have reached a point where synthetic and analytical traditions converge to shed light on the living being as a whole.

The British Army in World War I (3) The Eastern Fronts
Free Download Mike Chappell, "The British Army in World War I (3): The Eastern Fronts"
English | 2005 | pages: 48 | ISBN: 1841764019 | PDF | 4,1 mb
Although Britain's greatest commitment of land forces was on the Western Front during World War I (1914-1918), British, Empire and Dominion troops also fought in other theatres of operations - and in some cases continued to fight there after the Armistice had ended hostilities in the West. This last of our series of three titles describes these far-flung campaigns, in Italy, the Balkans, the Middle East, several parts of Africa, Russia, China, and even the North-West Frontier of India. The text is illustrated with contemporary photographs, and with meticulous colour plates of British, African, Indian and Australian troops, in the uniforms and equipment used on battle fronts from the desert sands to the snows of north Russia.
