The book reveals the significant role played by women in the production and performance of certain genres of music, such as piano music, songs and ballads, and touches on the reasons why they were more prominent in these areas than in the male preserves of chamber and orchestral music. In particular, the pioneering work of Sarah Glover in Sol-fa notation and the part played by Mary Wakefield in establishing the Competitive Festival Movement are charted. ![]() Free Download Kevin McCarron, "Narratives of Addiction: Savage Usury" English | ISBN: 3030884600 | 2021 | 248 pages | PDF | 6 MB Narratives of Addiction: Savage Usury is the first book to argue, in the face of more than a century's received wisdom, that drug addiction and alcoholism are undoubtedly evidence of individual moral flaws. However, the sense of morality that underlies this book is completely severed from Christianity. Instead, it is influenced in particular by the writings of the nineteenth-century German philosophers Arthur Schopenhauer and Frederick Nietzsche, both of whom insisted that a genuine morality was actually incompatible with Christianity. The sequence of chapters moves from addictions on the streets, into rehab clinics, and finally into the meetings of Alcoholics Anonymous and Narcotics Anonymous. This is the first book to argue that the search for pleasure drives alcoholism and drug addiction and not the "numbing of pain". Throughout the book I reject the claims of the medical profession, as embodied by the American Medical Association, that drug addiction and alcoholism are diseases, and further argue that they do not have the authority to tell hundreds of millions of Americans that addiction is not a moral failing. I also query throughout the book the claims of neuroscience, psychology, and the social sciences that addictions to alcohol and drugs are attributable to causes that their specific disciplines are best suited to understand. I argue that there is nothing complex about addiction: it is a simple behavioural disorder. The language routinely employed to discuss addiction is similarly not complex, just confused, and so it is also the rhetoric of addiction discourse, especially its use of simile, metaphor and euphemism, that this book evaluates. ![]() Free Download Napoleon: The Decline and Fall of an Empire: 1811-1821 by Michael Broers English | August 30, 2022 | ISBN: 1639361774 | 682 pages | PDF | 40 Mb *A KIRKUS BEST BIOGRAPHY OF 2022* ![]() Free Download NFT Gold Rush: The ultimate NFT handbook for beginners (English Edition) by Robert Joo, Aurel George Proorocu, Stepan Krivosheev English | February 21, 2023 | ISBN: 9355513755 | 329 pages | PDF | 8.76 Mb The ultimate guide to NFTs: Join the NFT Gold Rush and claim your first Free NFT here ![]() Free Download Suad Joseph, "Muslim-christian Conflicts: Economic, Political, And Social Origins" English | 2020 | ISBN: 0367167611, 0367017741 | EPUB | pages: 246 | 1.3 mb This book focuses on tensions between Christians and Muslims in one part of the large area where the two religions meet: the Eastern Mediterranean and the Nile Valley. One invasion was on Mindoro Island, south of Manila, while the other was on the Lingayen Gulf and its environson the west coast of Luzon, north of Manila. While the battle of Lingayen Gulf may still have been successful without the assistance of the newly completed air facilities on Mindoro Island, this made the battle a little easier for the Allies. This publication covers the preparation for the invasion of Mindoro Island and its successful operation. In addition, it discusses the huge invasion of the Lingayen Gulf. Particular emphasis is given to the damage caused by the Kamikaze on the hundreds of Allied ships that took part in the Battle of Lingayen Gulf Because the Japanese occupation of the Philippines was such a brutal episode in the War in the Pacific, a section of this book is also devoted to Japanese war crimes. Not all the war criminals involved in atrocities in the Philippines are examined here, but, rather, only those high-ranking officers deemed responsible in some way. |
