Over the last two decades, public diplomacy has become a central area of research within Cold War studies. Yet, this field has been dominated by studies of the United States' soft power practices. However, the so-called 'cultural dimension' of the Cold war was a much more multifaceted phenomenon. Little attention has been paid to European actors' efforts to safeguard a wide range of strategic and political interests by seducing foreign publics. This book includes a series of works which examine the soft power techniques used by various European players to create a climate of public opinion overseas which favored their interests in the Cold war context. This is a relevant book for three reasons. First, it contains a wide variety of case studies, including Western and Eastern, democratic and authoritarian, and core and peripheral European countries. Second, it pays attention to little studied instruments of public diplomacy such as song contests, sport events, tourism and international solidarity campaigns. Third, it not only concentrates on public diplomacy programs deployed by governments, but also on the role played by some non-official actors in the cultural Cold War in Europe

IP multicast routing is a technique used in computer networks to efficiently deliver data packets from a single sender to multiple recipients. It is specifically designed for applications where data needs to be distributed simultaneously to a group of interested receivers. In traditional unicast communication, a sender sends packets to individual receivers using their unique IP addresses. This creates a point-to-point connection between the sender and each receiver, resulting in duplicate transmissions if multiple receivers are interested in the same data. Unicast is inefficient for one-to-many or many-to-many communication scenarios. Multicast routing, on the other hand, allows a sender to transmit a single copy of a packet, and network routers replicate and forward it to all interested receivers. This saves network bandwidth and processing resources, as the data is distributed only once. Multicast routing uses special IP multicast addresses, typically in the range of 224.0.0.0 to 239.255.255.255, to identify multicast groups. To enable IP multicast routing, routers in the network need to support multicast routing protocols such as Protocol Independent Multicast (PIM). These protocols enable routers to exchange information about multicast groups and determine the optimal path for forwarding multicast traffic. Routers maintain multicast routing tables that specify the outgoing interfaces and next-hop routers for forwarding multicast packets. When a sender wants to send data to a multicast group, it encapsulates the data in a multicast packet and sets the appropriate multicast IP destination address. The routers along the path use the multicast routing tables to determine how to forward the packet to all interested receivers. Receivers interested in receiving multicast data join the multicast group by sending a membership request to the nearest router. The router adds the receiver to the multicast distribution tree, and subsequent multicast packets are forwarded

Low German is a direct descendant of Old Saxon, and as such part of the West Germanic dialect continuum. It a was once a major language of trade and administration around the North Sea and Baltic coasts. Its gradual decline began around the fifteenth century, and it has been retreating ever since, giving way to High German. Low German dialects continued nonetheless to be the dominant vernaculars in rural communities of northern Germany until a generation ago. The decline in the importance of agriculture and local, family-based economies has since weakened the language yet further. Low German is now an endangered language, with few fluent speakers among the younger generations, and only very rare cases of children acquiring it as a first language. The description is based on the dialect of the Krummhörn community, a cluster of rural settlements in Germany's northwestern district of East Frisia on the north sea coast. East Frisian Low German has a number of unique features which distinguish it from the better documented varieties of Westphalia or Schleswig-Holstein.It is characterised by a series of isoglosses in lexicon, verb morphology, and especially phonology, which features extensive diphthongisation. The chapters on syntactic typology and the tense system take a discourse-oriented approach, drawing on a corpus of recorded conversation and narratives.
