Though carbon dating has only been put into practice since the late 1940s, it has since revolutionized the work of archaeologists around the world. Its profound impact has opened the door for scientists to assign accurate timeline data to found objects, enabling them to ask even deeper questions about their work and how it relates to discoveries from across the globe. Through a close examination of the fundamental principles of physics involved in radiocarbon dating, as well as color photographs and sidebars, this book transforms a complicated science into an accessible, engaging, and eye-opening ride, page after page.

Canadian Spy Story Irish Revolutionaries and the Secret Police
Free Download David A. Wilson, "Canadian Spy Story: Irish Revolutionaries and the Secret Police"
English | ISBN: 0228011175 | 2022 | 568 pages | EPUB | 9 MB
In the mid-nineteenth century a group of Irish revolutionaries, known as the Fenians, set out to destroy Britain's North American empire. Between 1866 and 1871 they launched a series of armed raids into Canadian territory. In Canadian Spy Story David Wilson takes readers into a dark and dangerous world of betrayal and deception, spies and informers, invasion and assassination, spanning Canada, the United States, Ireland, and Britain. In Canada there were Fenian secret societies in urban areas, including Quebec City, Montreal, Ottawa, and Toronto, and in some rural townships, all part of a wider North American network. Wilson tells the tale of Irishmen who attempted to liberate their country from British rule, and the Canadian secret police who infiltrated their revolutionary cells and worked their way to the top of the organization. With surprises at every turn, the story includes a sex scandal that nearly brought Canadian spy operations crashing down, as well as reports from Toronto about a Description to assassinate Queen Victoria. Featuring a cast of idealists, patriots, cynics, manipulators, and liars, Canadian Spy Story raises fundamental questions about state security and civil liberty, with important lessons for our own time.

California and the Politics of Disability, 1850-1970 - Eileen V. Wallis
Free Download California and the Politics of Disability, 1850-1970 - Eileen V. Wallis
English | 2023 | 367 Pages | ISBN: 3031217136 | True PDF , EPUB | 10 MB
This book explores the political, legal, medical, and social battles that led to the widespread institutionalization of Californians with disabilities from the gold rush to the 1970s. By the early twentieth century, most American states had specialized facilities dedicated to both the care and the control of individuals with disabilities. Institutions reflect the lived historical experience of many Americans with disabilities in this era.Yet we know relatively little about how such state institutions fit into specific regional, state, or local contexts west of the Mississippi River; how those contexts shaped how institutions evolved over time; or how regional institutions fit into the USA's contentious history of care and control of Americans with mental and developmental disabilities. This book examines how medical, social, and political arguments that individuals with disabilities needed to be institutionalized became enshrined in state law in California through the creation of a "bureaucracy of disability." Using Los Angeles County as a case study, the book also considers how the friction between state and county policy in turn influenced the treatment of individuals within such facilities. Furthermore, the book tracks how the mission and methods of such institutions evolved over time, culminating in the 1960s with the birth of the disability rights movement and the complete rewriting of California's laws on the treatment and rights of Californians with disabilities. This book is a must-read for those interested in the history of California and the American West and for anyone interested in how the intersections of disability, politics, and activism shaped our historical understanding of life for Americans with disabilities.
