The Religious Roots of American Sociology
Free Download Cecil E. Greek, "The Religious Roots of American Sociology "
English | ISBN: 0367074249 | 2019 | 280 pages | EPUB | 346 KB
This book, first published in 1992, demonstrates that American sociology has deep religious roots which continue, both directly and indirectly, to influence the discipline today. Early American sociology was closely aligned with the social gospel movement in Protestantism, which hope to make use of the new science of sociology to help solve social problems and, ultimately, prepare America for the establishment of Christ's kingdom on earth. Although American sociology became secularized after 1920, it retained its ameliorative outlook, hoping to 'save' mankind through positivistic analysis and technocratic societal planning.

The Regulation of International Trade, Volume 2 The WTO Agreements on Trade in Goods
Free Download The Regulation of International Trade, Volume 2: The WTO Agreements on Trade in Goods By Petros C. Mavroidis
2016 | 888 Pages | ISBN: 0262029995 | PDF | 4 MB
A detailed examination of WTO agreements regulating trade in goods, discussing legal context, policy background, economic rationale, and case law. The General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade (GATT) has extended its institutional arsenal since the Kennedy round in the early 1960s. The current institutional design is the outcome of the Uruguay round and agreements reached in the ongoing Doha round (begun in 2001). One of the institutional outgrowths of GATT is the World Trade Organization (WT0), created in 1995. In this book, Petros Mavroidis offers a detailed examination of WTO agreements regulating trade in goods, discussing legal context, policy background, economic rationale, and case law. Each chapter examines a given legal norm and its subsequent practice. In particular, he discusses agreements dealing with customs clearance; "contingent protection" instruments, which allow WTO members unilaterally to add to the negotiated amount of protection when a certain contingency (for example, dumping) has occurred; TBT (Technical Barriers to Trade) and SPS (Sanitary and Phyto-sanitary Measures) agreements, both of which deal with such domestic instruments as environmental, health policy, or consumer information; the agreement on Trade Related Investment Measures (TRIM); sector-specific agreements on agriculture and textiles; plurilateral agreements (binding a subset of WTO membership) on government procurement and civil aviation; and transparency in trade relations. This book's companion volume examines the GATT regime for international trade.

The Regulation of International Trade, Volume 1 GATT
Free Download The Regulation of International Trade, Volume 1: GATT By Petros C. Mavroidis
2015 | 613 Pages | ISBN: 0262029847 | PDF | 3 MB
A detailed examination of the GATT regime for international trade, discussing the negotiating record, policy background, economic rationale, and case law. The General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade (GATT) was created alongside other towering achievements of the post-World War II era, including the United Nations, the World Bank, and the International Monetary Fund. GATT, the first successful agreement to generate multilateral trade liberalization, became the principal institution to administer international trade for the next six decades. In this book, Petros Mavoidis offers detailed examination of the GATT regime for international trade, discussing the negotiating record, policy background, economic rationale, and case law. Mavroidis offers a substantive first chapter that provides a detailed historical background to GATT that stretches from the 1927 World Economic Conference through Bretton Woods and the Atlantic Charter. Each of the following chapters examines the disciplines agreed to, their negotiating record, their economic rationale, and subsequent practice. Mavroidis focuses on cases that have influenced the prevailing understanding of the norm, as well as on literature that has contributed to its interpretation, and the final outcome. In particular, he examines quantitative restrictions and tariffs; the most favored nation clause (MFN), the cornerstone of the GATT edifice; preferential trade agreements and special treatment for products originating in developing countries; domestic instruments; and exceptions to the obligations assumed under GATT. This book's companion volume examines World Trade Organization (WTO) agreements regulating trade in goods.

Using first-hand information from oligarchs, spies and classified sources, "The Age of Putin" describes how all power was taken away from the businessmen; who thrived on the chaos under Yeltsin and shifted to a corporation of 300 spies, joined through a web of joint-shareholdings and Kremlin positions. Every rich person from Russia nowadays has become a mini version of Vladimir Putin - connected to the secret service, beholden to the Kremlin and willing to kill if necessary.

The Prosthetic Tongue Printing Technology and the Rise of the French Language
Free Download Katie Chenoweth, "The Prosthetic Tongue: Printing Technology and the Rise of the French Language "
English | ISBN: 0812251490 | 2019 | 360 pages | PDF | 29 MB
Of all the cultural "revolutions" brought about by the development of printing technology during the sixteenth century, perhaps the most remarkable but least understood is the purported rise of European vernacular languages. It is generally accepted that the invention of printing constitutes an event in the history of language that has profoundly shaped modernity, and yet the exact nature of this transformation-the mechanics of the event-has remained curiously unexamined.

The Printed Homer A 3,000 Year Publishing and Translation History of the Iliad and the Odyssey
Free Download The Printed Homer: A 3,000 Year Publishing and Translation History of the Iliad and the Odyssey By Philip Howard Young
2008 | 481 Pages | ISBN: 0786415509 | PDF | 17 MB
The Greek poet Homer was one of the greatest and most influential poets of all time. His epicIliadandOdysseywere the foundation of Greek education and culture in the classical age ("Our earliest infancy was entrusted to the care of Homer," said Heraclitus 2500 years ago) and are widely read today. Nothing is known of Homer's life (some even doubt his existence) or of the composition of the two epics but we can assume that the texts that survive are not as they were originally formed in oral tradition. This is a publishing and translation history of the written forms of theIliadand theOdyssey. It first considers who Homer might have been and then explores the when and how of the creation of the written forms of the works. The Homeric text in classical times and in medieval Europe and the Byzantine Empire, and the Homeric text, the printing press and Renaissance humanism are next taken up. The successes and failures of the many who attempted to translate the works are analyzed critically and then-a major portion of the book-all the known texts, editions and translations of theIliadand theOdysseyfrom 1470 to 2000 are listed. Finally, the author considers the future of the Homeric texts and the Poet's relevance to this and future generations. Seven valuable appendices (e.g., Modernizing of Latin City Names; First Printings in Vernacular Languages), a bibliography, and an index complete the work.

The Pre-Raphaelites
Free Download Robert de la Sizeranne, "The Pre-Raphaelites"
English | 2019 | pages: 256 | ISBN: 1646992768, 1683259335 | PDF | 18,7 mb
In Victorian England, with the country swept up in the Industrial Revolution, the Pre-Raphaelites, close to William Morris' Arts and Crafts movement, yearned for a return to bygone values. Wishing to revive the pure and noble forms of the Italian Renaissance, the major painters of the circle such as John Everett Millais, Dante Gabriel Rossetti and William Holman Hunt, in opposition to the academicism of the time, favoured realism and biblical themes over the affected canons of the 19th-century. This work, with its captivating text and rich illustrations, describes with enthusiasm this singular movement which notably inspired Art Nouveau and Symbolism.
