War Gothic in Literature and Culture
Steffen Hantke, Agnieszka Soltysik Monnet, "War Gothic in Literature and Culture"
English | 2015 | ISBN: 1138938211, 0367874393 | PDF | pages: 291 | 2.3 mb
In the context of the current explosion of interest in Gothic literature and popular culture, this interdisciplinary collection of essays explores for the first time the rich and long-standing relationship between war and the Gothic. Critics have described the global Seven Year's War as the "crucible" from which the Gothic genre emerged in the eighteenth century. Since then, the Gothic has been a privileged mode for representing violence and extreme emotions and situations. Covering the period from the American Civil War to the War on Terror, this collection examines how the Gothic has provided writers an indispensable toolbox for narrating, critiquing, and representing real and fictional wars. The book also sheds light on the overlap and complicity between Gothic aesthetics and certain aspects of military experience, including the bodily violation and mental dissolution of combat, the dehumanization of "others," psychic numbing, masculinity in crisis, and the subjective experience of trauma and memory. Engaging with popular forms such as young adult literature, gaming, and comic books, as well as literature, film, and visual art, War Gothic provides an important and timely overview of war-themed Gothic art and narrative by respected experts in the field of Gothic Studies. This book makes important contributions to the fields of Gothic Literature, War Literature, Popular Culture, American Studies, and Film, Television & Media.

Virtue and Economy Essays on Morality and Markets
Andrius Bielskis, Kelvin Knight, "Virtue and Economy: Essays on Morality and Markets"
English | 2015 | ISBN: 1472412567 | PDF | pages: 264 | 2.1 mb
Interest in Aristotelianism and in virtue ethics has been growing for half a century but as yet the strengths of the study of Aristotelian ethics in politics have not been matched in economics. This ground-breaking text fills that gap. Challenging the premises of neoclassical economic theory, the contributors take issue with neoclassicism's foundational separation of values from facts, with its treatment of preferences as given, and with its consequent refusal to reason about final ends. The contrary presupposition of this collection is that ethical reasoning about human ends is essential for any sustainable economy, and that reasoning about economic goods should therefore be informed by reasoning about what is humanly and commonly good. Contributions critically engage with aspects of corporate capitalism, managerial power and neoliberal economic policy, and reflect on the recent financial crisis from the point of view of Aristotelian virtue ethics. Containing a new chapter by Alasdair MacIntyre, and deploying his arguments and conceptual scheme throughout, the book critically analyses the theoretical presuppositions and institutional reality of modern capitalism.

Virtual Mathematics The Logic of Difference
Simon Duffy, Paul Patton, "Virtual Mathematics: The Logic of Difference"
English | 2006 | ISBN: 1903083311 | PDF | pages: 280 | 10.2 mb
These essays examine the work of Gilles Deleuze, in particular his practice of enlisting mathematical resources to underpin and inform a wide variety of philosophical positions. Deleuze's work serves as a focus in these pieces for alternative conceptual lineages and as a rich source for fashioning mathematical concepts as tools for understanding a world seen in terms of becoming and difference. With contributions from Alain Badiou, Manuel DeLanda, Gilles Châtelet, and Daniel Smith, this analytic review challenges the self-imposed limits of philosophy while it elucidates a host of connections between mathematics and philosophy.

Viewing Photography in Post-Dictatorship Latin America Visual Interruptions, 1997-2016
David Rojinsky, "Viewing Photography in Post-Dictatorship Latin America: Visual Interruptions, 1997-2016"
English | ISBN: 3031175891 | 2022 | 310 pages | EPUB | 9 MB
This book examines the archival aesthetic of mourning and memory developed by Latin American artists and photographers between 1997-2016. Particular attention is paid to how photographs of the assassinated or disappeared political dissident of the 1970s and 1980s, as found in family albums and in official archives, were not only re-imagined as conduits for private mourning, but also became allegories of social trauma and the struggle against socio-political amnesia. Memorials, art installations, photo-essays, street projections, and documentary films are all considered as media for the reframing of these archival images from the era of the Cold War dictatorships in Argentina, Chile, Guatemala, and Uruguay. While the turn of the millennium was supposedly marked by "the end of history" and, with the advent of digital technologies, by "the end of photography," these works served to interrupt and hence, belie the dominant narrative on both counts. Indeed, the book's overarching contention is that the viewer's affective identification with distant suffering when engaging these artworks is equally

Unlocking the Wordhord Anglo-Saxon Studies in Memory of Edward B. Irving, Jr
Mark C. Amodio, Katherine O'Brien O'Keeffe, "Unlocking the Wordhord: Anglo-Saxon Studies in Memory of Edward B. Irving, Jr."
English | 2003 | ISBN: 0802048226 | PDF | pages: 374 | 18.8 mb
The Anglo-Saxons placed a great deal of importance on wisdom and learning, something Beowulf makes dramatically clear when he uses his 'wordhord' to command respect and admiration from his friends and foes alike. Modern day scholars no longer have recourse to the living language and culture of the Anglo-Saxons, and as a result must turn to their 'wordhords' - the literary, historical, and cultural artefacts that have survived in various degrees of intactness - to learn about life in Anglo-Saxon England.

Undoing Aesthetics
Undoing Aesthetics By Wolfgang Welsch
1997 | 224 Pages | ISBN: 0761955941 | PDF | 8 MB
`The aestheticization of everyday life′ has become a commonplace term, one which often merely scratches the surface of contemporary culture. This study illuminates the deeper dynamics of aesthetic reality from a philosophical perspective.Wolfgang Welsch, author of the influential Aesthetic Thinking, develops an important analysis of contemporary culture with philosophical bite. He examines global aestheticization phenomena, probes the relationship of aesthetics and ethics, and considers the broad relevance of aesthetics for contemporary thinking. He argues that modes of thought familiar from the aesthetic realm comprise fundamental paradigms for understanding today′s reality. The implications for specific and everyday issues are demonstrated in studies of architecture, advertising, the Internet and our perception of the life world.

Understanding the Culture of Markets
Virgil Storr, "Understanding the Culture of Markets"
English | 2015 | ISBN: 1138940054 | EPUB | pages: 168 | 0.3 mb
How does culture impact economic life? Is culture like a ball and chain that actors must lug around as they pursue their material interests? Or, is culture like a tool-kit from which entrepreneurs can draw resources to aid them in their efforts? Or, is being immersed in a culture like wearing a pair of blinders? Or, is culture like wearing a pair of glasses with tinted lenses? Understanding the Culture of Markets explores how culture shapes economic activity and describes how social scientists (especially economists) should incorporate considerations of culture into their analysis.

Understanding Supply and Demand
Erica Owoeye, "Understanding Supply and Demand "
English | ISBN: 1502646099 | 2019 | pages | EPUB | 4 MB
How can supply and demand cause a factory to close in one town or country and open in another? How do consumers drive what products are being made and at what prices goods are being sold? Students will find answers to these questions and more through this book that explains the law of supply and demand. Examples tether these concepts to the real world through discussions of topics like the effects of crop shortages and surpluses. Readers will have the opportunity to consider how the increase of oil prices decreases the demand for oil and causes consumers to look for alternative sources of energy. Students will gain an understanding of the local, national, and global implications of supply and demand.
