Lying, boasting, flattering, railing, backbiting, grumbling, false swearing, and garrulous and incendiary speech were but a few of the speech acts that provoked moral condemnation all over Western Europe from the thirteenth century onward. This study examines medieval notions of harmful speech conduct as reflected in Middle Dutch ecclesiastical, secular-ethical, and legal textual sources. According to these texts, the tongue was able to 'break bones' and inflict considerable damage on the speaker, on listeners, and on other relevant participants in speech situations. The book utilises two novel approaches. First, the subject is systematically explored in terms of three different types of behaviour in order to discover an overarching discourse: harmful speech as a sin, as moral misbehaviour, and as a crime. Second, ideas from modern language theory are used to analyse the textual sources. By adopting these two approaches, the book asserts that an overarching discourse of harmful speech can be found in the Middle Dutch ecclesiastical, secular-ethical, and legal domains, a discourse coined in this study as 'the discourse of the untamed tongue'. ![]() Singing Away the Hunger : The Autobiography of an African Woman By Mpho 'M'atsepo Nthunya, K Limakatso Kendall (editor) 1997 | 200 Pages | ISBN: 0253333520 | PDF | 12 MB A compelling and unique autobiography by an African woman with little formal education, less privilege, and almost no experience of books or writing. Mpho's voice is a voice almost never heard in literature or history, a voice from within the struggle of ""ordinary"" African women to negotiate a world which incorporates ancient pastoral ways and the congestion, brutality, and racist violence of city life. It is also the voice of a born storyteller who has a subject worthy of her gifts - a story for all the world to hear. ![]() David Detmer, "Simply Sartre " English | ISBN: 1943657424 | 2020 | 160 pages | EPUB | 962 KB "This is a delightful introduction to the life and ideas of Jean-Paul Sartre. Detmer's writing is clear, engaging, and fun to read. The book weaves together accurate overviews of Sartre's main ideas with convincing reasons these ideas are still relevant today. The book ends with useful summaries of 50 of Sartre's works-a perfect roadmap for anyone who wishes to read Sartre himself. This was the first navy of the United States and much of the fleet was comprised of ships that had been modified from existing vessels, converted into warships to provide a crucial service during the American Revolutionary War. Despite having no real funding, this unique fleet had a surprising amount of success against the might of the Royal Navy, and this title discusses the strengths and weaknesses of each design, and the differences between European and American warships of the time. With a close look at how these ships performed in key battles, as well as the exploits of John Paul Jones - the founding father of the United States Navy - this is a complete, illustrated overview of the ships' service and development until France's entry into the war and the subsequent decline in importance of the Continental Navy. ![]() Prince Ilangô Adigal, Alain Daniélou, "Shilappadikaram" English | 2009 | pages: 230 | ISBN: 0811200019 | PDF | 20,2 mb The primary epic of Tamil literature. ![]() Shape: The Hidden Geometry of Absolutely Everything by Jordan Ellenberg English | May 25, 2021 | ISBN: 0241413524 | 489 pages | PDF | 14 Mb THE INTERNATIONAL BESTSELLER |
