The Eve Tree A Novel
Rachel Devenish Ford, "The Eve Tree: A Novel"
English | 2011 | ISBN: 0615477836 | 272 pages | EPUB | 0.27 MB
From Ecowomen.net: "A beautiful and haunting tale about generations connected by livelihood and place, Ford evokes the great books by Kingsolver and Steinbeck. Lush prose, conflicted characters so vividly drawn you would recognize them passing them on the street, and a gorgeous taste of environmental debate. Ford never gets pedantic, but blends thoughtful reflection and the urgency of fighting fires both metaphoric and literal in this expertly written novel." Author Rachel Devenish Ford presents a debut novel rich with emotion and need. Ten years ago, when her mother retired, Molly Boscelli was called back to her family ranch and goat farm, deep in the remote hills of Northern California. For years she has resented the strong ties of responsibility, but now she finds herself scrambling to find help as a forest fire approaches, threatening the place that she only now realizes is her sanctuary. Written in three points of view, The Eve Tree tells the story of Molly as she works to overcome mental illness and gathers determination to save her land from fire, of her husband, Jack, as he faces the thing he fears most, and of Molly's mother as she digs deeply into the past to find the healing that both she and Molly need. It is a novel about the beauty and difficulty of loving people, the desperation and longing of commitment, and a family who work to find their place on the earth in the shape of their land.

The Dirty Secret of Early Modern Capitalism The Global Reach of the Dutch Arms Trade, Warfare and Mercenaries in the Se
Kees Boterbloem, "The Dirty Secret of Early Modern Capitalism: The Global Reach of the Dutch Arms Trade, Warfare and Mercenaries in the Se"
English | ISBN: 1138692883 | 2019 | 244 pages | EPUB | 567 KB
This book shows how the Dutch accumulation of great wealth was closely linked to their involvement in warfare. By charting Dutch activity across the globe, it explores Dutch participation in the international arms trade, and in wars both at home and abroad. In doing so, it ponders the issue of how capitalism has often historically thrived best when its practitioners are ruthless and ignore the human cost of their search for riches. This complicates the traditional Marxist understanding of capitalists as middle-class exploiters in arguing for a much greater agency among lower-class Dutch soldiers and sailors in their efforts to benefit from skills that were in high demand.

The Difference that Gender Makes to International Peace and Security
Sara Davies, "The Difference that Gender Makes to International Peace and Security"
English | ISBN: 1138607614 | 2018 | 124 pages | EPUB | 524 KB
Fifteen years after the adoption of UN Security Council Resolution 1325 which establishes the Women, Peace and Security agenda, there is now a need to assess the impacts of gender equality efforts, and to understand why and how gender equality reforms have advanced to the extent that they have. This book examines how international peace and security is re-envisioned from a gender perspective by mostly focusing on the nuances presented by the Asia Pacific region. It argues that despite the diversity of political, socio-cultural and economic systems in the Asia Pacific, women and girls in the region continue to experience similar forms of insecurities. Several countries in the Asia Pacific have demonstrated relative peace and stability. In addition, women's leadership and participation in peacebuilding are and continue to be increasingly recognized in the region too. However, as the chapters in this book demonstrate, applying a critical gender analysis allows for the interrogation of 'veneers' of political order which can then mask or normalise everyday gendered insecurities. The analysis of country cases such as Myanmar, Cambodia and Fiji underscores a rethinking of the political order in the Asia Pacific which leaves existing gender inequalities intact.

The Dictator Dilemma The United States and Paraguay in the Cold War
Kirk Tyvela, "The Dictator Dilemma: The United States and Paraguay in the Cold War "
English | ISBN: 0822965739 | 2019 | 261 pages | EPUB | 819 KB
The Dictator Dilemmatells the story of US bilateral relations with the Alfredo Stroessner dictatorship (1954-1989). Tyvela focuses on how and why that diplomatic relationship changed during the Cold War from cooperation, based on mutual opposition to communism, to conflict, based on clashing expectations concerning democratic reforms and human rights. The policy debates by officials in Washington and in Asunción brought out a tension that has defined US diplomacy for more than a century: how can the United States partner with tyrants while credibly proclaiming to advance a democratic mission in the world? Tyvela argues that the Stroessner regime was symbolic of a broader foreign policy struggle to perpetuate, enforce, and ultimately redefine the importance of friendly dictators to US global and hemispheric interests.
