Analytics and Intuition in the Process of Selecting Talent A Holistic Approach
English | 2023 | ISBN: 978-3110992731 | 606 pages | True PDF EPUB | 7.73 MB
Human decisions, especially in management and personnel selection, are based on making judgments about people analytically and intuitively. Yet in business and scientific contexts, judgments are expected to be based on a rational analysis rather than intuitions or emotions. Intuition is often seen as something mystical that should not be trusted and thus eliminated from human decision-making. Our empirical and theoretical research shows that this is impossible when people are dealing with people. Instead, intuitions and emotions have significant power in the decision-making process. Neuroscience even shows that humans are incapable of switching off their emotions or intuitions when making decisions. Therefore, intuition and emotions as evolutionary achievements of human beings should be looked at more closely to use the wisdom they offer. This book provides an insight into the current state of research on rational-analytical procedures in personnel selection and complements this with research on intuitions and emotions in personnel diagnostics. By integrating scientifically verifiable rational-analytical decision-making procedures with the inner experiential knowledge of people, this book bridges two complementary ways of recognizing and making good decisions. It demonstrates how intuitions are developed and used in different fields of practice and cultures and how scientific research results from rational-analytical and intuitive-emotional selection procedures are successfully integrated by practitioners.

Analytic Hyperbolic Geometry and Albert Einstein's Special Theory of Relativity, 2nd Edition
English | 2022 | ISBN: 9811244103 | 775 pages | True PDF EPUB | 25.12 MB
This book presents a powerful way to study Einstein's special theory of relativity and its underlying hyperbolic geometry in which analogies with classical results form the right tool. The premise of analogy as a study strategy is to make the unfamiliar familiar. Accordingly, this book introduces the notion of vectors into analytic hyperbolic geometry, where they are called gyrovectors. Gyrovectors turn out to be equivalence classes that add according to the gyroparallelogram law just as vectors are equivalence classes that add according to the parallelogram law. In the gyrolanguage of this book, accordingly, one prefixes a gyro to a classical term to mean the analogous term in hyperbolic geometry. As an example, the relativistic gyrotrigonometry of Einstein's special relativity is developed and employed to the study of the stellar aberration phenomenon in astronomy.Furthermore, the book presents, for the first time, the relativistic center of mass of an isolated system of noninteracting particles that coincided at some initial time t = 0. It turns out that the invariant mass of the relativistic center of mass of an expanding system (like galaxies) exceeds the sum of the masses of its constituent particles. This excess of mass suggests a viable mechanism for the formation of dark matter in the universe, which has not been detected but is needed to gravitationally 'glue' each galaxy in the universe. The discovery of the relativistic center of mass in this book thus demonstrates once again the usefulness of the study of Einstein's special theory of relativity in terms of its underlying hyperbolic geometry.

Analysis and Comparison of Metaheuristics
English | 2023 | ISBN: 3031201043 | 230 pages | True PDF EPUB | 27.92 MB
This book presents a comparative perspective of current metaheuristic developments, which have proved to be effective in their application to several complex problems. The study of biological and social entities such as animals, humans, or insects that manifest a cooperative behavior has produced several computational models in metaheuristic methods. Although these schemes emulate very different processes or systems, the rules used to model individual behavior are very similar. Under such conditions, it is not clear to identify which are the advantages or disadvantages of each metaheuristic technique. The book is compiled from a teaching perspective. For this reason, the book is primarily intended for undergraduate and postgraduate students of Science, Electrical Engineering, or Computational Mathematics. It is appropriate for courses such as Artificial Intelligence, Electrical Engineering, Evolutionary Computation. The book is also useful for researchers from the evolutionary and engineering communities. Likewise, engineer practitioners, who are not familiar with metaheuristic computation concepts, will appreciate that the techniques discussed are beyond simple theoretical tools since they have been adapted to solve significant problems that commonly arise in engineering areas.

An Overview of General Relativity and Space-Time
English | 2022 | ISBN: 978-0367683047 | 272 pages | True PDF | 14.37 MB
This textbook equips Masters' students studying Physics and Astronomy with the necessary mathematical tools to understand the basics of General Relativity and its applications. It begins by reviewing classical mechanics with a more geometrically oriented language, continues with Special Relativity and, then onto a discussion on the pseudo-Riemannian space-times. Applications span from the inner and outer Schwarzschild solutions to gravitational wave, black holes, spherical relativistic hydrodynamics, and Cosmology. The goal is to limit the abstract formalization of the problems, to favor a hands-on approach with a number of exercises, without renouncing to a pedagogical derivation of the main mathematical tools and findings.

An Introduction to Multiphase, Multicomponent Reservoir Simulation
English | 2022 | ISBN: 0323992358 | 348 pages | True PDF EPUB | 69.67 MB
An Introduction to Petroleum Reservoir Simulation is aimed toward graduate students and professionals in the oil and gas industry working in reservoir simulation. It begins with a review of fluid and rock properties and derivation of basic reservoir engineering mass balance equations. Then equations and approaches for numerical reservoir simulation are introduced. The text starts with simple problems (1D, single phase flow in homogeneous reservoirs with constant rate wells) and subsequent chapters slowly add complexities (heterogeneities, nonlinearities, multi-dimensions, multiphase flow, and multicomponent flow). Partial differential equations and finite differences are then introduced but it will be shown that algebraic mass balances can also be written directly on discrete grid blocks that result in the same equations. Many completed examples and figures will be included to improve understanding.
An Introduction to Petroleum Reservoir Simulation is designed for those with their first exposure to reservoir simulation, including graduate students in their first simulation course and working professionals who are using reservoir simulators and want to learn more about the basics.
