The Future Imaginary in Indigenous North American Arts and Literatures
Kristina Baudemann, "The Future Imaginary in Indigenous North American Arts and Literatures "
English | ISBN: 0367754819 | 2021 | 238 pages | PDF | 3 MB
This book examines the future in Indigenous North American speculative literature and digital arts. Asking how different Indigenous works imagine the future and how they negotiate settler colonial visions of what is to come, the chapters illustrate that the future is not an immutable entity but a malleable textual/digital product that can function as both a colonial tool and a catalyst for decolonization. Central to this study is the development of a methodology that helps unearth the signifying structures producing the future in selected works by Darcie Little Badger, Gerald Vizenor, Stephen Graham Jones, Skawennati, Danis Goulet, Scott Benesiinaabandan, Postcommodity, Kite, Jeff Barnaby, and Ryan Singer. Drawing on Jason Lewis's "future imaginary" as the theoretical core, the book describes the various forms of textual representation and virtual simulation through which notions of Indigenous continuation are expressed in literary and new media works. Arguing that Indigenous authors and artists apply the aesthetics of the future as a strategy in their works, the volume conceptualizes its multimedia corpus as a continuously growing archive of, and for, Indigenous futures.

The Fragile Scholar Power and Masculinity in Chinese Culture
The Fragile Scholar: Power and Masculinity in Chinese Culture By Geng Song
2004 | 256 Pages | ISBN: 9622096204 | PDF | 13 MB
The Fragile Scholar examines the pre-modern construction of Chinese masculinity from the popular image of the fragile scholar (caizi) in late imperial Chinese fiction and drama. The book is an original contribution to the study of the construction of masculinity in the Chinese context from a comparative perspective (Euro-American). Its central thesis is that the concept of "masculinity" in pre-modern China was conceived in the network of hierarchical social and political power in a homosocial context rather than in opposition to "woman." In other words, gender discourse was more power-based than sex-based in pre-modern China, and Chinese masculinity was androgynous in nature. The author explains how the caizi discourse embodied the mediation between elite culture and popular culture by giving voice to the desire, fantasy, wants and tastes of urbanites.

The Eye of the Law Two Essays on Legal History
Michael Stolleis, "The Eye of the Law: Two Essays on Legal History "
English | ISBN: 0415472741 | 2008 | 96 pages | EPUB | 4 MB
Written by the eminent German legal historian, Michael Stolleis, these two 'Essays on Legal History' offer an original and compelling history of the symbolism through which law is characterised as being 'above' us. In 'The Eye of the Law', the history of this metaphor is followed from antiquity through to the present day: from the Greek Eye of Justice, the eye of the impartial judge of the Underworld, the Eye of God watching past, present and future, the Eye of the Prince, guiding his subjects, to the almighty Eye of the Law. While our belief in the law may have become brittle, nothing escapes what is now the Eye of Big Brother. 'In the Name of the Law' takes up the various formulas used to legitimate the decisions of the courts, from the times of absolutism over the 19th century until today. The speaker who speaks in the name of a higher being underlines his function: his authority comes from above. And it is 'in the name of' god, king, people, state, nation, or law, that a weak, earthly, justice receives its support.

The Eucharist - Its Origins and Contexts Sacred Meal, Communal Meal, Table Fellowship in Late Antiquity, Early Judaism, and Ea
The Eucharist - Its Origins and Contexts: Sacred Meal, Communal Meal, Table Fellowship in Late Antiquity, Early Judaism, and Early Christianity By David Hellholm, Dieter Sänger
2017 | 2100 Pages | ISBN: 3161539184 | PDF | 46 MB
These three volumes are the results of two conferences on the Christian eucharist and its context in the traditions of sacred and communal meals; the first conference was held at the University of Kiel, the second at the University of Agder's Study Center at Metochi (Lesbos). Scholars from around the world form an international, interdisciplinary and interdenominational collaboration from various fields including History of Religion, Classics, Old and New Testament, Judaism, Patristics, Archeology, and History of Art. Images, illustrations and indexes complete the volume. The broad scope covered by these studies invites readers not only to a clearer interpretation of the origin of the Eucharist and its development in the early church, but also enables them to reach a better understanding of the religious and cultural background of sacred and communal meals in general in ancient societies.
