Bikini Story
Patrik Alac, "Bikini Story"
English | 2019 | ISBN: 1646993624, 164699230X | EPUB | pages: 256 | 18.1 mb
It was in 1946 that the world first came to hear of a coral atoll in the Marshall Islands called Bikini. The following year, French couturier Louis Réard borrowed the name and applied it to a bathing costume for women. Breaking decades of boring conformity, Réard dared to 'undress' women's bodies in order to better emphasise what remained clothed - albeit in tiny wisps of material. By accepting the bikini as popular beachwear, women also found themselves thinking differently about their bodies. An ideal of perfection was repeatedly reinforced by the appearance of such stars as Marilyn Monroe, Brigitte Bardot, and Ursula Andress on the cinema screen, all of whom were featured in bikinis that accentuated their own gloriously curvaceous contours. More than a bathing costume, the bikini made its own contribution to the sexual revolution during the 1970s, and, even more so, to the changing relationship between men and women in general. This book investigates the history of the bikini as a way of noting the change in society's perception of women. Furthermore, it examines how women have taken control of the way they look and laid claim to their own sexual equality. Discover here, through a wealth of photographs, this progression of femininity, which spans more than 50 years.

English | 2014 | ISBN: 1491509716, 0425239470, 0399145672 | EPUB | pages: 255 | 0.2 mb
In his career, Dave Barry has done just about everything-written bestselling nonfiction, won a Pulitzer Prize, seen his life turned into a television series. And now, at last, he has joined the long list of literary figures from Jane Austen to Tolstoy who have made the transition from humor columnist to novelist-and done it with a style and inventiveness that establishes that, yes, he is very good at that, too.

Beyond Kant and Nietzsche The Munich Defence of Christian Humanism
Beyond Kant and Nietzsche: The Munich Defence of Christian Humanism By Tracey Rowland
2021 | 200 Pages | ISBN: 0567703169 | PDF | 1 MB
The Christian Humanist ideas of six Catholic scholars who were based in Munich during the first half of the 20th century are profiled in this volume. They were all interested in presenting and defending a Christian humanism in the aftermath of German Idealism and the anti-Christian humanism of Friedrich Nietzsche. They were seeking to offer hope to Christians during the darkest years of the Nazi regime and the post-Second World War era of shame, guilt and reconstruction.

Beyond El Barrio Everyday Life in Latinao America
, "Beyond El Barrio: Everyday Life in Latina/o America"
English | ISBN: 081479128X | 2010 | 296 pages | AZW3 | 2 MB
Freighted with meaning, "el barrio" is both place and metaphor for Latino populations in the United States. Though it has symbolized both marginalization and robust and empowered communities, the construct of el barrio has often reproduced static understandings of Latino life; they fail to account for recent demographic shifts in urban centers such as New York, Chicago, Miami, and Los Angeles, and in areas outside of these historic communities.

Between Heaven and Russia Religious Conversion and Political Apostasy in Appalachia
Between Heaven and Russia: Religious Conversion and Political Apostasy in Appalachia By Sarah Riccardi-Swartz
2022 | 288 Pages | ISBN: 0823299503 | PDF | 10 MB
How is religious conversion transforming American democracy? In one corner of Appalachia, a group of American citizens has embraced the Russian Orthodox Church and through it Putin's New Russia. Historically a minority immigrant faith in the United States, Russian Orthodoxy is attracting Americans who look to Russian religion and politics for answers to Western secularism and the loss of traditional family values in the face of accelerating progressivism. This ethnography highlights an intentional community of converts who are exemplary of much broader networks of Russian Orthodox converts in the United States. These converts sought and found a conservatism more authentic than Christian American Republicanism and a nationalism unburdened by the broken promises of American exceptionalism. Ultimately, both converts and the Church that welcomes them deploy the subversive act of adopting the ideals and faith of a foreign power for larger, transnational political ends.Offering insights into this rarely considered religious world, including its far-right political roots that nourish the embrace of Putin's Russia, this ethnography shows how religious conversion is tied to larger issues of social politics, allegiance, (anti)democracy, and citizenship. These conversions offer us a window onto both global politics and foreign affairs, while also allowing us to see how particular U.S. communities are grappling with social transformations in the twenty-first century. With broad implications for our understanding of both conservative Christianity and right-wing politics, as well as contemporary Russian-American relations, this book provides insight in the growing constellations of far-right conservatism. While Russian Orthodox converts are more likely to form the moral minority rather than the moral majority, they are an important gauge for understanding the powerful philosophical shifts occurring in the current political climate in the United States and what they might mean for the future of American values, ideals, and democracy.
