Making Social Welfare Policy in America Three Case Studies since 1950
Edward D. Berkowitz, "Making Social Welfare Policy in America: Three Case Studies since 1950"
English | ISBN: 022669223X | 2020 | 353 pages | EPUB | 696 KB
American social welfare policy has produced a health system with skyrocketing costs, a disability insurance program that consigns many otherwise productive people to lives of inactivity, and a welfare program that attracts wide criticism. Making Social Welfare Policy in America explains how this happened by examining the historical development of three key programs-Social Security Disability Insurance, Medicare, and Temporary Aid to Needy Families. Edward D. Berkowitz traces the developments that led to each program's creation. Policy makers often find it difficult to dislodge a program's administrative structure, even as political, economic, and cultural circumstances change. Faced with this situation, they therefore solve contemporary problems with outdated programs and must improvise politically acceptable solutions. The results vary according to the political popularity of the program and the changes in the conventional wisdom. Some programs, such as Social Security Disability Insurance, remain in place over time. Policy makers have added new parts to Medicare to reflect modern developments. Congress has abolished Aid to Families of Dependent Children and replaced with a new program intended to encourage work among adult welfare recipients raising young children.

Macropolitics Essays on the Philosophy and Science of Politics
Morton A. Kaplan, "Macropolitics: Essays on the Philosophy and Science of Politics"
English | ISBN: 1138527408 | 2017 | 256 pages | EPUB | 942 KB
A selection of essays by a pioneer in the application of systems theory to political analysis, Macropolitics develops the author's concern with the philosophical foundations of political science, and with the extension of philosophical principles into the realm of empirical analysis. For this volume, Kaplan has written a long essay on the philosophical foundations of his work, which constitutes one of his most important statements. He develops and explains within a philosophical context his contention that values can be treated in an empirically meaningful fashion. Organized to expand or illustrate the major points raised in this introduction, the essays that follow deal with such topics as the nature and utility of systems theory, empirical treatment of historical explanations, the systemic and psychological foundations of values, and empirical applications of systems theory in analyzing international political systems. Enlarging the dialogue between conflicting viewpoints, Kaplan exposes the common roots of Western scientific thought and Marxist philosophy, emphasizing that both status quo and revolutionary philosophies are one-sided. In his new introduction, Ira Sharkansky sees this as a truly groundbreaking work: "thanks in considerable part to the contributions of Professor Kaplan, international relations theory is a major component of political sciencei?1/2a milestone on our quest for understanding i?1/2 a distinguished part of the ongoing record." Machon The Fragments
Machon, A. S. F. Gow, "Machon: The Fragments"
English | 2004 | pages: 171 | ISBN: 0521609291 | PDF | 3,5 mb
Machon was a writer of Comedies who lived and worked in Alexandria in the middle of the third century B.C. All of his work that survives is preserved in the Deipnosophistae of Athenaeus who, besides two fragments of Comedies of no great importance, quotes also 462 verses from a collection of anecdotes which Machon called Xpeiai. These anecdotes are written in the iambic verse of Comedy. They are concerned with the doings and sayings of courtesans, parasites, and musicians, sometimes in relation to persons of historical importance. They are often scabrous but also not infrequently amusing; and they are of considerable interest both as documents of social history and as a type of literature which, though popular in antiquity, has hardly survived. The Xpeiai, which present many problems of reading and interpretation, have never before been separately edited. Recent editors of Athenaeus have improved the text; but to find commentaries it is necessary to go back to Casaubon's edition of Athenaeus, published in 1600, and to Schweighauser's, published in 1801-7.

MacOS and iOS Internals, Volume III Security & Insecurity
Jonathan Levin, "MacOS and iOS Internals, Volume III: Security & Insecurity"
English | 2016 | ISBN: 0991055535 | 540 pages | PDF (scan) | 21.4 MB
In this third and final volume of the "Mac OS and *OS Internals" trilogy, Jonathan Levin takes on the security of Apple's OSes. Part I of this volume explores the mechanisms and techniques employed - Including Auditing, Authentication, the MAC Framework, Code Signing, Sandboxing, SIP, AMFI and more - most of which are documented for the first time. Part II then discusses historical vulnerabilities in MacOS 10.10 and 10.11, as well as all modern exploits - from Evasi0n (iOS6) through Yalu for iOS 10.2 (including KPP bypass) and the latest async_wake (for 11.1.2) in unprecedented detail - showing both the vulnerabilities and their exploitation methods, step by step. With no source code for most of Apple's components or jailbreaks, the approach taken is that of deep reverse engineering, with plenty of hands-on examples, illustrations and decompilation of code. The book has also been updated with an appendix detailing the changes in iOS 12 and MacOS 10.14. The book's companion website (NewOSXBook.com) is full of tools, a fully searchable online index, samples, other bonus material for this book, and also offers a direct buying option.

Never before published details about the Apple File System (APFS), Secure Enclave Processor OS (SEPOS), iBoot, Mac EFI and more are explained in meticulous detail and fine illustrations. Numerous experiments allow a hands-on approach, making this invaluable to anyone who wishes to learn more about how the XNU kernel operates - and how to interface with its darkest and most powerful mechanisms. MacOS and iOS Internals, Volume I User Mode (v1.3)
Jonathan Levin, "MacOS and iOS Internals, Volume I: User Mode (v1.3)"
English | 2017 | ISBN: 099105556X | 540 pages | PDF (scan) | 23.1 MB
In this first volume of the "Mac OS and *OS Internals" trilogy, Jonathan Levin takes on the user mode components of Apple's operating systems. Starting with an introduction as to their layered architecture, touring private frameworks and libraries, and then delving into the internals of applications, process, thread and memory management, Mach messaging, launchd and XPC internals, and wrapping up with advanced debugging and tracing techniques using the most powerful APIs that were hitherto unknown and unused outside Apple's own applications. As with the other books in this series, the approach taken is that of deep reverse engineering, with plenty of hands-on examples, illustrations, pointers to Apple's open sources (when available) and decompilation of code (when not). This volume (v1.3) has been expanded with over 15 more pages for Darwin 19 (MacOS 15/iOS13) , with brand new content of MacOS and iOS installation images and procedures. The book's companion website (NewOSXBook.com) is full of tools, samples and other bonus material for this book, and also offers a direct buying option.
