Masculinity, Motherhood, and Mockery: Psychoanalyzing Culture and the Iatmul Naven Rite in New Guinea By Eric Kline Silverman
2001 | 264 Pages | ISBN: 0472067575 | PDF | 29 MB
Masculinity, Motherhood, and Mockery analyzes the relationship between masculinity and motherhood in an Eastern Iatmul village along the Sepik River in Papua New Guinea. It focuses on a metaphorical dialogue between two countervailing images of the body, dubbed by literary theorist Mikhail Bakhtin as the "moral" and the "grotesque." Eastern Iatmul men in Tambunum village idealize an image of motherhood that is nurturing, sheltering, cleansing, fertile, and chaste--in a word, moral. But men also fear an equally compelling image of motherhood that is defiling, dangerous, orificial, aggressive, and carnal--hence, grotesque. Masculinity in Tambunum is a rejoinder both subtle and strident, both muted and impassioned, to these contrary, embodied images of motherhood. Throughout this work, Eric Silverman details the dialogics of mothering and manhood throughout Eastern Iatmul culture, including in his analysis cosmology and myth; food- and childraising; architecture and canoes; ethnophysiology and sexuality; shame and hygiene; marriage and kinship; and perhaps most significantly, a ceremonial locus classicus in anthropology: the famous Iatmul naven rite. This book provides the first sustained examination of naven since Bateson, presenting new data and interpretations that are based entirely on original, first-hand ethnographic research. The sustained engagement with anthropological and psychoanalytic theory coupled with a refreshing examination of a famous and still-enigmatic ritual is sure to make multiple contributions to pressing debates in contemporary anthropology and social theory. Eric Silverman is Associate Professor of Anthropology, DePauw University.

Masculinity and Popular Television By Rebecca Feasey
2009 | 224 Pages | ISBN: 0748627979 | PDF | 1 MB
A comprehensive and accessible introduction to the representation of masculinities in a wide range of popular television genres. Rebecca Feasey reads the depiction of masculinity in the soap opera, homosexuality in the situation comedy, fatherhood in prime-time animation, emerging manhood in the supernatural teen text, alternative gender roles in science fiction, male authority in police procedurals, masculine anxieties in the hospital drama, violence and aggression in sports coverage, ordinariness and emotional connectedness in the reality game show, and domesticity in lifestyle television. Masculinity and Popular Television illuminates the construction, circulation, and interrogation of masculinities in contemporary British and American programming and realtes such images to the "common sense" model of the hegemonic male that dominates the cultural landscape.

Masculine Jealousy and Cont Cinema By Candida Yates
2007 | 240 Pages | ISBN: 1403986215 | PDF | 1 MB
Masculine Jealousy and Contemporary Cinema provides new insights into the relationship between masculinity and jealousy through the study of representations of male jealousy in contemporary Hollywood cinema. It argues that male jealousy has played a key role in the psycho-cultural shaping of Western masculinities and male fantasy, and this is explored through case studies of films and their reception in the press. The book will interest graduates, postgraduates and researchers exploring theories of masculinity and jealousy, cinematic theories of representation, stardom and spectatorship.

Masculine Interests By Robert Lang
2002 | 384 Pages | ISBN: 0231113005 | PDF | 6 MB
Until Masculine Interests not much had been written about men "as men" in the cinema. Now Robert Lang considers how Hollywood articulates the eroticism that is intrinsic to identification between men. He considers masculinity in social and psychoanalytic terms, maintaining that a major function of the movies is to define different types of masculinity, and to either valorize or criticize these forms. Focusing on several films -- primarily The Lion King, The Most Dangerous Game, The Outlaw, Kiss Me Deadly, Midnight Cowboy, Innerspace, My Own Private Idaho, the Batman series, and Jerry Maguire -- Lang questions the way in which American culture distinguishes between homosexual and nonhomosexual forms of male bonding. In arguing for a much more complex recognition of the homosocial continuum, he contends that queer sexuality is far more present in American cinema than is usually acknowledged.

Marx's 'Eighteenth Brumaire': (Post)modern Interpretations By Mark Cowling, James Martin, eds.
2002 | 273 Pages | ISBN: 0745318304 | PDF | 1 MB
Marx's account of the rise of Louis-Napoleon Bonaparte is one of his most important texts. Written after the defeat of the 1848 revolution in France and Bonaparte's subsequent coup, it is a concrete analysis that raises enduring theoretical questions about the state, class conflict and ideology. Unlike his earlier analyses, Marx develops a nuanced argument concerning the independence of the state from class interests, the different types of classes, and the determining power of ideas and imagery in politics. In the Eighteenth Brumaire he applies his 'materialist conception of history' to an actual historical event with extraordinary subtlety and an impressive, powerful command of language. This volume contains the most recent and widely acclaimed translation of the Eighteenth Brumaire by Terrell Carver, together with a series of specially commissioned essays on the importance of the Brumaire in Marx's canon. Contributors discuss its continuing significance and interest, the historical background and its present-day relevance for political philosophy and history.

Florian Butollo, "Marx and the Robots: Networked Production, AI, and Human Labour"
English | ISBN: 0745344380 | 2022 | 336 pages | MOBI | 2 MB
Marxist discourse around automation has recently become waylaid with breathless techno-pessimist dystopias and fanciful imaginations of automated luxury communism. This collection of essays by both established veterans of the field and new voices is a refreshingly sober materialist reflection on recent technological developments within capitalist production.
