What are American humor's characteristics? How have they evolved and displayed themselves? Which characteristics are distinctively, or even uniquely, American? Originally appearing as an issue of the American Quarterly, these essays take a close look at American humor from revolutionary times to the present day, and particularly focus on the neglected trends of the past fifty years. Looking at American comic figures as diverse-and even surprising-as Mark Twain and Richard Nixon, at various vehicles for American humor such as comic strips, radio and television, movies, and standup comedians, and at different genres of humor including political, ethnic, and feminist humor, this book brings a lively new perspective to the study of American culture. ![]() Advanced C++ Cookbook: Become an expert C++ programmer by mastering concepts like STL, concurrency, and generic programming by Dr. Rian Quinn ![]() Takashi Iijima, "Action Anatomy: For Gamers, Animators, and Digital Artists" English | ISBN: 006073681X | 2005 | 176 pages | PDF | 121 MB Experience real human body structures and movements with this indispensable guide to the the digital expression of anatomical mechanisms. It is read with intense devotion by hundreds of millions of people, stands as authoritative for Judaism and Christianity, and informs and affects the politics and lives of the religious and non-religious around the world. But how well do we really know it? The Bible is so familiar, so ubiquitous that we have begun to take our knowledge of it for granted. The Bible many of us think we know is a pale imitation of the real thing. ![]() A Divine Confrontation By Graham Cooke 1999 | 378 Pages | ISBN: 0768420393 | PDF | 2 MB I have never read anything by Graham Cooke that did not inspire me. The world of wine vocabulary is growing alongside the current popularity of wine itself, particularly as new words are employed by professional wine writers, who not only want to write interesting prose, but avoid repetition and cliché. The question is, what do these words mean? Can they actually reflect the objective characteristics of wine, and can two drinkers really use and understand these words in the same way? In this second edition of Wine and Conversation, linguist Adrienne Lehrer explores whether or not wine drinkers (both novices and experts) can in fact understand wine words in the same way. Her conclusion, based on experimental results, is no. Even though experts do somewhat better than novices in some experiments, they tend to do well only on wines on which they are carefully trained and/or with which they are very familiar. Does this mean that the elaborate language we use to describe wine is essentially a charade? Lehrer shows that although scientific wine writing requires a precise and shared use of language, drinking wine and talking about it in casual, informal setting with friends is different, and the conversational goals include social bonding as well as communicating information about the wine. Lehrer also shows how language innovation and language play, clearly seen in the names of new wines and wineries, as well as wine descriptors, is yet another influence on the burgeoning and sometimes whimsical world of wine vocabulary. ![]() When the Diagnosis Is Multiple Sclerosis: Help, Hope, and Insights from an Affected Physician By Kym Orsetti Furney M.D. 2007 | 143 Pages | ISBN: 0275994686 | PDF | 2 MB This is a very helpful-and very human- discussion of MS and the havoc it can introduce into one's life. As a first-hand book, written by someone who has traveled down that road, it can be enormously valuable to those diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis. There are many books out there that help one deal with this subject. There are books on Nutrition, Diet, Exercise, Ayurvedic Medicine, Yoga, Herbals, wholistics, etc. Most often, these are written by health care workers, rather than by patients themselves. Do a quick search on Amazon & you'll come up with a lot of titles. Where to start? This book is a helpful discussion of the traditional medical approaches to MS. It has clearly been documented that people taking the A,B,C, R of traditional MS therapy have positively impacted their illness. (Avonex, Beta Seron, Copaxone, Rebif). However, as MS does not behave uniformly in everyone, a multi-disciplinary approach encompassing both traditional and alternative will hopefully be of benefit. Number One- Do No Harm! The author of this book, Dr. Kym Orsetti Furney MD, offers a traditional and valuable perspective on this subject. Rasmussen, Ann L. Yaktine 2009 | 695 Pages | ISBN: 0309131138 | PDF | 4 MB As women of childbearing age have become heavier, the trade-off between maternal and child health created by variation in gestational weight gain has become more difficult to reconcile. Weight Gain During Pregnancy responds to the need for a reexamination of the 1990 Institute of Medicine guidelines for weight gain during pregnancy. It builds on the conceptual framework that underscored the 1990 weight gain guidelines and addresses the need to update them through a comprehensive review of the literature and independent analyses of existing databases. The book explores relationships between weight gain during pregnancy and a variety of factors (e.g., the mother's weight and height before pregnancy) and places this in the context of the health of the infant and the mother, presenting specific, updated target ranges for weight gain during pregnancy and guidelines for proper measurement. New features of this book include a specific range of recommended gain for obese women. Weight Gain During Pregnancy is intended to assist practitioners who care for women of childbearing age, policy makers, educators, researchers, and the pregnant women themselves to understand the role of gestational weight gain and to provide them with the tools needed to promote optimal pregnancy outcomes. |
