The bulk of the book (Chapters 2-9) is based on the algebraic approach of Lieb and Yngvason, but extended to encompass both positive and negative temperatures and systems in which entropy increases and decreases in adiabatic processes. We show that these four possibilities are already present in Carathéodory's version of the Second Law which arises as a theorem from the axioms. We develop generalized versions of the Kelvin-Planck and Clausius formulations valid for the same range of systems. The parallel development in Chapter 10 takes a geometric approach. We discuss the limitations associated with the local nature of Carathéodory's Principle and present the resolution of this problem due to Boyling. Part of the aim here is to substantiate the claim of Arnold that the mathematical structure of thermodynamics is contact geometry. The last two chapters of the book extend the scope of the discussion to, respectively, critical phenomena and non-equilibrium systems. Chapter 11 is a presentation of phase transitions and critical phenomena in which we discuss universality and use scaling theory to derive scaling laws. Chapter 12 contains a generalization to non-equilibrium. We present the extension of Lieb and Yngvason's work to non-equilibrium and also give a brief account of classical irreversible thermodynamics (CIT). The latter enables a possible understanding of the way that the lack of a unique entropy function in the Lieb and Yngvason non-equilibrium approach can be resolved. The book is completed by a set of appendices which provide mathematical and physical support to the work in the main text. ![]() Free Download The Fountainhead (Centennial Edition) by Ayn Rand English | April 26, 2005 | ISBN: 0452286751, 9781101137185 | True EPUB | 752 pages | 0.8 MB The revolutionary literary vision that sowed the seeds of Objectivism, Ayn Rand's groundbreaking philosophy, and brought her immediate worldwide acclaim. This modern classic is the story of intransigent young architectHoward Roark, whose integrity was as unyielding as granite...of Dominique Francon, the exquisitely beautiful woman who loved Roark passionately, but married his worst enemy...and of the fanatic denunciation unleashed by an enraged society against a great creator. As fresh today as it was then, Rand's provocative novel presents oneof the most challenging ideas in all of fiction-that man's ego is the fountainhead of human progress... ![]() Free Download The Explanatory Power of Models: Bridging the Gap between Empirical and Theoretical Research in the Social Sciences by Robert Franck English | PDF (True) | 2002 | 305 Pages | ISBN : 1402008678 | 33.6 MB Empirical research often lacks theory. This book progressively works out a method of constructing models which can bridge the gap between empirical and theoretical research in the social sciences. This might improve the explanatory power of models. The issue is quite novel, and it benefited from a thorough examination of statistical and mathematical models, conceptual models, diagrams and maps, machines, computer simulations, and artificial neural networks. These modelling practices have been approached through different disciplines. ![]() Free Download The Experience of Human Communication : Body, Flesh, and Relationship By Frank J. Macke 2014 | 257 Pages | ISBN: 1611475481 | EPUB | 1 MB This book deals with matters of embodiment and meaning-in other words, the essential components of what Continental thought, since Heidegger, has come to consider as "communication." A critical theme of this book concerns the basic tenet that consciousness of one's Self and one's body is only possible through human relationship. This is, of course, the phenomenological concept of intersubjectivity. But rather than let this concept remain an abstraction by discussing it as merely a function of language and signs, this work attempts to explicate it empirically. That is, it discusses the manner in which-from infancy to childhood and adolescence (and the dawning of our sexual identities) through physical maturity and old age-we come to experience the ecstasy of what Merleau-Ponty has so poetically termed "flesh." It is rarely clear what someone means when she or he uses the word "communication." An important objective of this book is, thus, to advance understanding of what communication is. In academic discourse, "communication" has come to be understood in a number of contexts-some conflicting and overlapping-as a process, a strategy, an event, an ethic, a mode or instance of information, or even a technology. In virtually all of these discussions, the concept of communication is discussed as though the term's meaning is well known to the reader. When communication is described as a process, the meaning of the term is held at an operational level-that is, in the exchange of information between one person and another, what must unambiguously be inferred is that "communication" is taking place. In this context, information exchange and communication become functionally synonymous. But as a matter of embodied human psychological experience, there is a world of difference between them. As such, this book attempts to fully consider the question of how we experience the event of human communication. The author offers a pioneering study that advances the raison d'être of the emergent field of "communicology," while at the same time offering scholars of the human sciences a new way of thinking about embodiment and relational experience. ![]() Free Download The Evolutionary Journey of Amino Acids: From the Origin of Life to Human Metabolism English | 2025 | ISBN: 3031933923 | 260 Pages | PDF EPUB (True) | 31 MB This book takes readers on a journey from the very fundamental and chemical beginnings of amino acids on Earth to their role in human metabolism. The Ethics of Documentary Film reformulate some of the foundational notions in documentary films studies and practice, relating to archive and the production of knowledge. Published in a particular moment in time, post pandemic and in the middle of the climate change debates and the traumas of new conflicts in the world, it gives voice to all of the important contemporary debates and offers ideas about different international approaches to documentary. With particular focus on the question of to what extent a documentary film can be defined as an ethical project, the various contributions look at issues of history, the hidden stories, and issues of the ethics of representation to provide new insights into the role documentary film can play within society. ![]() Free Download The Eternal Crossroads : The Art of Flannery O'Connor By Leon V. Driskell; Joan T. Brittain 2014 | 190 Pages | ISBN: 081315202X | EPUB | 1 MB Flannery O'Connor was a writer of extraordinary power and virtuosity. Her strong supple prose blends humor, pathos, satire, and grotesquerie which leads the reader to the evil at the center of the self's labyrinth. There, she confronts that evil with originality and power, pulling the reader into consideration of the terrifying dependencies of love in the recesses of the heart. This study focuses on Flannery O'Connor's sense of the coincidence of the eternal and cosmic with worldly time and place--"the eternal crossroads"-- and how that sense controls and infuses her fiction. From an examination of various influences upon Miss O'Connor's work--Pierre Teilhard de Chardin, Mauriac, Nathaniel West, and Hawthorne--the authors consider her novels and stories, as well as several stories never collected. Their textual analysis shows that her structures, images, motifs, and symbols became vehicles for anagogical meaning as she progressed from early promise to artistic fulfillment. Considering Miss O'Connor's own comments on her writing, the authors illuminate some frequently misunderstood features of her work, such as her "grotesques" and her stress on death and violence. In so doing they make an important contribution to our understanding of how Flannery O'Connor arrived at "the eternal crossroads." ![]() Free Download The Epic Retirement Bucket List: 150 Globe-Trotting Ideas to Inspire Your Next Chapter by Julie Chickery English | December 20th, 2022 | ISBN: 1685396380 | 166 pages | True EPUB | 7.60 MB Make your retirement an unforgettable adventure using this inspiring guide so you'll never run out of creative ways to make your next phase your best phase.
