It presents a typology of local state-society relations, and applies this to characterise the most relevant institutionalised relations between local government and societal actors at the municipal level in 22 European countries. The comparative volume will clarify whether or not patterns can be detected in the makeup of different types of networks; whether or not these patterns are country-specific or policy-specific; and why cases exist which are so distinct that they are not subsumable under a certain pattern. Taken together, this book will go beyond national typologies to emphasise the role of agency and innovation in particular policy sectors, providing a major contribution in the study of the local governance of Europe. It will appeal to scholars and students of local governance, public administration, urban planning and European studies. ![]() Free Download Bhaso Ndzendze, "Perspectives on Africa-China Infrastructural and Industrial Cooperation: Empirical Findings and Conceptual Implications " English | ISBN: 303138394X | 2023 | 257 pages | EPUB | 3 MB This edited volume discusses infrastructural cooperation and industrial cooperation between China and several countries in Africa. Social inequality is a historical characteristic of the region, but at the beginning of the 21st century, a handful of progressive governments seemed to be adopting policies that could reduce this historical trend. Many of these efforts, however, were blocked or reversed by the COVID-19 pandemic, which both exposed the persistence of historical trends and contributed to the emergency of new forms of inequality in the region. ![]() Free Download Sameena Hameed, "Persian Gulf 2021-22: India's Relations with the Region" English | ISBN: 9811944334 | 2022 | 579 pages | EPUB | 1315 KB The Persian Gulf 2021-22 is the ninth in the annual Persian Gulf Series published by MEI@ND. The text presents and explains this regional orientation and its continuing implications for war and peace. It examines Israel's strategy of outflanking, both geographically and politically, the hostile Sunni Arab Middle East core that surrounded it in the early decades of its sovereign history, a strategy that became a pillar of the Israeli foreign and defense policy. This "periphery doctrine" was a grand strategy, meant to attain the major political-security goal of countering Arab hostility through relations with alternative regional powers and potential allies. It was quietly abandoned when the Sadat initiative and the emerging coexistence between Israel and Jordan reflected a readiness on the part of the Sunni Arab core to deal with Israel politically rather than militarily. For a brief interval following the 1991 Madrid conference and the 1993 Oslo accords, Israel seemed to be accepted by all its neighbors, prompting then Foreign Minister Shimon Peres to muse that it could even consider joining the Arab League. Yet this periphery strategy had been internalized to some extent in Israel's strategic thinking and it began to reappear after 2010, following a new era of Arab revolution. The rise of political Islam in Egypt, Turkey, Gaza, southern Lebanon and possibly Syria, coupled with the Islamic regime in Iran, has generated concern in Israel that it is again being surrounded by a ring of hostile states--in this case, Islamists rather than Arab nationalists. The book analyzes Israel's strategic thinking about the Middle East region, evaluating its success or failure in maintaining both Israel's security and the viability of Israeli-American strategic cooperation. It looks at the importance of the periphery strategy for Israeli, moderate Arab, and American, and European efforts to advance the Arab-Israel peace process, and its potential role as the Arab Spring brings about greater Islamization of the Arab Middle East. Already, Israeli strategic planners are talking of "spheres of containment" and "crescents" wherein countries like Cyprus, Greece, Azerbaijan, and Ethiopia constitute a kind of new periphery. By looking at Israel's search for Middle East allies then and now, the book explores a key component of Israel's strategic behavior. Written in an accessible manner for all students, it provides a better understanding of Israel's role in the Middle East region and its Middle East identity. ![]() Free Download Robyn Brunton, "Perinatal Care and Considerations for Survivors of Child Abuse: Challenges and Opportunities" English | ISBN: 3031336380 | 2023 | 213 pages | EPUB | 1422 KB This edited collection collates research concerning the challenges and opportunities of pregnancy and the postpartum period for perinatal women who are survivors of child abuse. Drawing on empirical findings and theory, this is the first book to identify emerging and topical issues around screening and disclosure and how clinicians and professionals may help to build resilience for child abuse survivors. Pregnancy and the postpartum period present unique challenges and opportunities for clinicians and mental health professionals who may encounter pregnant women with adverse childhood experiences. Challenges include antenatal care considerations for survivors of child abuse such as triggering events that may further traumatize women or result in avoidance behaviours such as failing to engage in routine antenatal care, and other associated adverse outcomes including increased health concerns and, in some cases, prolonged labour and preterm birth. These challenges point to the need for identifying women at risk and providing sensitive care, and this book demonstrates the opportunities which arise through interventions and resilience building. ![]() Free Download Perils of Progress-Navigating Dark Sides of AI: Examining Ethical and Societal Challenges of Autonomous Systems and Intelligent Machines: Rise of Cognitive Computing: AI Evolution from Origins to Adoption, #2 English | 2023 | ISBN: 0611340062 | Pages: 96 | EPUB (True) | 417.75 KB Perils of Progress: Navigating Dark Sides of AI is a must-read for anyone interested in the future of technology and its impact on society.
