Free Download Hydraulic Fracturing and Microseismicity for Applications of Co2 Storage: The Role of Rock Properties and Fluid Viscosity
English | 2025 | ISBN: 036760843X | 229 pages | True PDF | 31.72 MB
Hydraulic fracturing (HF) has become essential for extracting oil and gas from unconventional reservoirs and heat energy from hot dry rock masses. However, a paradox remains in the fracturing mode of HF: stress conditions predicted by elasticity theory suggest tensile fracturing, while shear fracturing is dominant in HF-related microseismicity (MS). This book resolves this paradox by reviewing the results of various laboratory and small-scale field experiments conducted by the author over nearly 40 years.

Free Download Hunger Inc.: Building Solidarity Beyond the Food Bank
English | December 20, 2025 | ASIN: B0F1ZMKZ11 | 192 pages | EPUB (True) | 1.38 MB
Since 2020, we have seen a huge increase in the demand for charitable food aid, due to multiple political and economic crises. Initially seen as an emergency measure, corporate-backed food aid programs are now entrenched 'solutions' to hunger. But who really benefits from them? Kayleigh Garthwaite travelled across Britain, North America and Europe, working with food banks, co-ops, urban farms and food justice organisations. She documents the limitations of these programs, and how institutionalising charitable food aid absolves governments of their responsibility to ensure that people have a right to food. As hunger and inequality continue to rise within advanced capitalist countries, this issue is more urgent than ever. Kayleigh Garthwaite proposes radical key policies for governments and explores alternative community-led responses grounded in solidarity, not charity, to end the need for food aid before the indignity of food banks becomes completely normalised.

Free Download Hume's Skeptical Crisis: A Textual Study By Robert J. Fogelin
2009 | 192 Pages | ISBN: 0195387392 | PDF | 1 MB
In Hume's Skeptical Crisis Robert Fogelin provides a textual study of the changes in perspective that emerged as Hume pursued his attempt to introduce the experimental method of reasoning into moral subjects--the subtitle of the Treatise of Human of Nature. In the process of giving an account of the operations of the human mind, Hume discovered that the mechanisms that create and sustain our beliefs are deeply unreliable and, in fact, capricious in their operations. Hume's crisis emerged when he recognized that the weaknesses that he ascribed to the operations of the human mind apply with equal force to the operations of his own mind. How, he asked himself, could he justify pursuing profoundly difficult investigations employing mental faculties that were manifestly not up to the task? His response was to trim back the ambitious program announced at the start of the Treatise. Hume returned to this topic in the opening section of the Enquiry Concerning Human Understanding, where, in a more circumspect mood, he weighed the reasons for and against pursuing what he calls abstruse philosophy. Given our limited capacities and the complexities of the subject, what, he asked, are the chances of success in pursing abstruse philosophical investigations? Hume answered that we could expect at least modest success by adopting the stance of a mitigated skeptic, where one cautiously examines only those topics suitable to our limited mental capacities. Hume held that this standpoint could be attained by counter-balancing radical Pyrrhonian doubt on one side with our non-rational instincts to believe on the other side. As a result, Hume's initial attempt to produce a "compleat system of the sciences" was transformed into "reflections of common life, methodized and corrected."

Free Download Humanitarian Intervention and Conflict Resolution in West Africa By John M. Kabia
2009 | 234 Pages | ISBN: 0754674444 | PDF | 1 MB
The end of the Cold War has been characterised by a wave of violent civil wars that have produced unprecedented humanitarian catastrophe and suffering. Although mostly intra-state, these conflicts have spread across borders and threatened international peace and security through mass refugee flow, proliferation of light arms and the rise of local mercenary groups. One of the most affected areas is the West African sub-region which has been home to some of Africa's most brutal and intractable conflicts for more than a decade.Kabia locates these operations within an expanded post-Cold War conceptualisation of humanitarian intervention and examines the organisation's capacity in protecting civilians at risk in civil conflicts and facilitating the processes of peacemaking and post-war peacebuilding aimed at preventing a relapse into conflict. By using the empirical case of ECOWAS, this book examines the challenges posed by complex political emergencies (CPEs) to humanitarian intervention. It traces the evolution of ECOWAS from an economic integration project to that of a security organisation and examines the challenges inherent in such a transition.
