They were executed between the middle of seventh and turn of tenth-eleventh century and form a fascinating and diverse group, which allows a closer look at many aspects of the history and culture of Christian Nubia. They include texts containing single proper names, as well as longer texts supplying information on historical events and throwing light on the spiritual and ritual life of the Christian community in Nubia. The most remarkable group of texts was placed in one room located exactly opposite to the apse. The inscriptions found there form a homogeneous group with all texts comprising liturgical hymns. Among the texts, one can distinguish a liturgical canon and structural hymn for the begging of Lent, another canon for Lazarus Saturday, a series of short troparia connected with the Palm Sunday procession and a list of hymns and psalms incipits. Those texts significantly enlarge the modest collection of liturgica known from Christian Nubia; therefore their analysis in a broader context is an essential part of this book. ![]() Free Download Lithuanians in Michigan By Marius K. Grazulis 2009 | 112 Pages | ISBN: 0870138138 | PDF | 1 MB In Lithuanians in Michigan Marius Grazulis recounts the history of an immigrant group that has struggled to maintain its identity. Grazulis estimates that about 20 percent of the 1.6 million Lithuanians who immigrated to the United States arrived on American shores between 1860 and 1918. While first-wave immigrants stayed mostly on the east coast, by 1920 about one-third of newly immigrated Lithuanians lived in Michigan, working in heavy industry and mining. With remarkable detail, Grazulis traces the ways these groups have maintained their ethnic identity in Michigan in the face of changing demographics in their neighborhoods and changing interests among their children, along with the challenges posed by newly arriving "modern" Lithuanian immigrants, who did not read the same books, sing the same songs, celebrate the same holidays, or even speak the same language that previous waves of Lithuanian immigrants had preserved in America. Anyone interested in immigrant history will find Lithuanians in Michigan simultaneously familiar, fascinating, and moving. ![]() Free Download Literature and the Remains of the Death Penalty by Peggy Kamuf English | 2019 | ISBN: 0823282309 | 173 Pages | PDF | 4.7 MB ![]() Free Download Aleš Karmazin, "Liquid Sovereignty: Post-Colonial Statehood of China and India in the New International Order " English | ISBN: 3031479041 | 2023 | 275 pages | EPUB | 4 MB This book project studies the variation of sovereignty in international order by analysing how the general model of sovereignty is localised in the political practice of two major non-Western rising powers, namely China and India. It aims to investigate how the sovereignty of these states is constituted, which includes the question of how sovereignty works and becomes constituted in specific contexts and cases that fall outside the discourses and positions of the so-called Westphalian (conservative, absolutist) sovereignty that is dominantly advocated by these two states on a global level. The core of this project explores specific contested cases and situates them vis-à-vis the broader approaches of China and India to sovereignty. I specifically analyse four particular cases: China's approach to sovereignty in relation to Hong Kong and Taiwan and India's approach to sovereignty in relation to Bhutan and Kashmir. In doing so, I will illustrate that sovereignty is a flexible and plasticphenomenon which can be intertwined with principles, models or practices that are usually seen as divergent from or contradicting sovereignty; for example, those that derive from China's and India's imperial and colonial history. |
