The Thought of Matter Materialism, Conceptuality and the Transcendence of Immanence
Free Download The Thought of Matter : Materialism, Conceptuality and the Transcendence of Immanence By Jr. Richard A. Lee
2015 | 154 Pages | ISBN: 1783486422 | EPUB | 1 MB
Discussions of materialism have exploded in recent years. From the speculative realism/materialism of Quentin Meillassoux to the New Materialism of many modern Marxisms, the interest in a return to or rehabilitation of materialism is on the rise. What is not analyzed in many of these discussions, however, is a trenchant methodological and metaphysical problem lying at the basis of any philosophical materialism: if matter is simply that which is other than thought, then how can it be thought without drawing it away from its materiality? On the other hand, if one assumes a direct access to matter, to this other, what are the conditions of that access? Are they material conditions or cognitive (thought) conditions? Does what would present itself immediately present, at the same time, the conditions that allow it to be presented? If not, then we are closer to a theology of matter and further from a philosophical materialism. The Thought of Matter investigates this metaphysical and methodological problem through Aristotle, Marx, Adorno, Althusser, Duns Scotus, Hobbes, and Benjamin in order to show that a philosophical materialism necessarily requires the concepts and tools of thought in order to allow the otherness of matter to emerge in its own materiality.

The Theory of War and Peace The Geophilosophy of Europe
Free Download The Theory of War and Peace : The Geophilosophy of Europe By Oleg Bazaluk
2017 | 199 Pages | ISBN: 144389883X | PDF | 1 MB
This book explores the ontology of war and peace. Using the results of empirical and theoretical research in the field of geophilosophy, as well as neuroscience, psychology, social philosophy and military history, it defines axiomatics of the theory of war and peace; formulates its consequences; tests the theory on the geophilosophy of Europe; and offers a new theoretical basis for the definition of the European Security Strategy. The text proves that war and peace are ways to achieve a regulatory compromise between manifestations of the active principle, which was initially laid in the foundation of the human mentality, and the influence of the external environment through natural selection.

The Tempest-Tossed Church Being a Catholic Today
Free Download The Tempest-Tossed Church : Being a Catholic Today By Gerard Windsor
2017 | 257 Pages | ISBN: 174223531X | EPUB | 1 MB
In The Tempest-Tossed Church award-winning writer Gerard Windsor explores what it is to be a Catholic. Interlaced with twelve moving cameos, he entertains and stimulates with anecdote, history, forays into art and literature, and the occasional bit of gossip. Starting with how you get religion in the first place, Windsor moves on to the Gospels and the personality of Jesus Christ, and the possibility of any relationship with him. He then grapples with the existence and nature of God, and winds down with the grubby present realities - the factions within current Catholicism, scandal, sexual abuse, argument and bigotry.

The Syntax of Class Writing Inequality in Nineteenth-Century America
Free Download The Syntax of Class : Writing Inequality in Nineteenth-Century America By Amy Schrager Lang
2003 | 165 Pages | ISBN: 0691113890 | EPUB | 1 MB
The Syntax of Class explores the literary expression of the crisis of social classification that occupied U.S. public discourse in the wake of the European revolutions of 1848. Lacking a native language for expressing class differences, American writers struggled to find social taxonomies able to capture--and manage--increasingly apparent inequalities of wealth and power. As new social types emerged at midcentury and, with them, new narratives of success and failure, police and reformers alarmed the public with stories of the rise and proliferation of the "dangerous classes." At the same time, novelists as different as Maria Cummins, Nathaniel Hawthorne, Frank Webb, Elizabeth Stuart Phelps, and Horatio Alger Jr. focused their attention on dense engagements across the lines of class. Turning to the middle-class idea of "home" as a figure for social harmony and to the lexicons of race and gender in their effort to devise a syntax for the representation of class, these writers worked to solve the puzzle of inequity in their putatively classless nation. This study charts the kaleidoscopic substitution of terms through which they rendered class distinctions and follows these renderings as they circulated in and through a wider cultural discourse about the dangers of class conflict. This welcome book is a finely achieved study of the operation of class in nineteenth-century American fiction--and of its entanglements with the languages of race and gender.

The Superintendent and the CFO Building an Effective Team
Free Download The Superintendent and the CFO : Building an Effective Team By Brian L. Benzel; Kenneth E. Hoover
2015 | 149 Pages | ISBN: 1475820453 | EPUB | 1 MB
Building a strong relationship with the CFO is essential for superintendents seeking to build sustainable educational programs for all students. Benzel and Hoover use their CFO and superintendent experience to identify what future leaders in both roles need to know and be able to do with respect to fiscal leadership and improved student learning. This book examines how a focus on student achievement must be central to fiscal planning. The authors discuss the role values play in forming the leadership team, how to create a climate for success through collaborative strategies. They also examine ways to build systems strength to cope with uncertainty in fiscal planning. Using this leadership base, they outline the key management elements that must be in place to assure sound fiscal practices that monitor fiscal status and manage cash flow to mitigate uncertainty. Benchmarks for organizational success enhance communication with governing boards, internal audiences and taxpayers. This book provides leaders with an outline of what do during every quarter of the fiscal year to exercise effective fiscal and educational leadership.

The Substance and Value of Italian Si
Free Download The Substance and Value of Italian Si By Joseph Davis
2017 | 273 Pages | ISBN: 9027215847 | EPUB | 1 MB
This book offers an original treatment of the Italian clitic si. Sharply separating encoded grammar from inference in discourse, it proposes a unitary meaning for si, including impersonals, passives, and reflexives. Si signals third-person participancy but makes no distinctions of number, gender, or case role. The analysis advances the Columbia School framework by relying on just these straightforward oppositions, attributing variety of interpretation largely to language use rather than to grammar. The analysis places si within a network of oppositions involving all the other clitics. Data come primarily from twentieth-century and more recent published and on-line literature. The book will be of interest to functional linguists, students of reflexivity, and scholars of the Italian language.

The Story of Naomi-The Book of Ruth From Gender to Politics
Free Download The Story of Naomi-The Book of Ruth : From Gender to Politics By Terry Giles; William J. Doan
2016 | 218 Pages | ISBN: 1498206182 | EPUB | 1 MB
The book of Ruth is probably best known as a romantic love story that, through the expression of loving devotion, overcomes tragedy and ends with the founding of the most famous family in all of biblical Israel. But the book wasn't always this way. In fact, it wasn't a book at all but rather a story told with a very different purpose in mind. Before Ruth, there was the Story of Naomi, a subversive story designed to challenge a male-dominated status quo. Through comedy, sarcastic irony, and unparalleled rhetorical skill the Naomi storyteller holds up for inspection social gender roles and the power of sexuality in a manner that resonates yet today. The Story of Naomi--The Book of Ruth goes behind the literary rendition of the story and recaptures the original oral tale, with script and performance directions that brings to life the humor, tragedy, and transparent honesty shared between the Naomi storyteller and her audience.
