A number of examples of history writing are provided which support the arguments of the text: five books of history 'about America and the Americas,' and some examples from archeological reconstruction, from historical drumming in West Africa, and from the history of a painting by Albrecht Duerer. The book does not reach a conclusion - does not define historia - but views the term from many angles, and will refresh the reader's sense of what the historical is.And what is it? It is the dimension in which the present takes on cargo and weight. While it is true that the past is instantly devoured by the present, it is also true that the past pervades the present - while being devoured by it. Of course when I switch on the light Edison switches it for me. And it is not just TE. It is industry, commerce, and the electrician around the corner. I can do nothing effectual without the past, but the past has no meaning except through me. Historia rings many changes on this obvious, but endlessly instructive, idea. ![]() Free Download Hindu Women's Property Rights in Rural India : Law, Labour and Culture in Action By Reena Patel 2007 | 158 Pages | ISBN: 0754646165 | PDF | 1 MB Hindu women in India have independent right of ownership to property under the Law of Succession (The Hindu Succession Act, 1956). Michael Adams By Jason A. Scorza (editor) 2016 | 216 Pages | ISBN: 1683930096 | EPUB | 1 MB This volume assembles the papers, presentations, and speeches from the 50th Anniversary Meeting of the International Association of University Presidents (IAUP) held in Oxfordshire in 2015. This book is a companion volume to the proceedings of the 1965 inaugural meeting of IAUP, also published by Fairleigh Dickinson University Press. The highlight of the 50th Anniversary Meeting was an academic conference at Oxford University on the theme of "Higher Education in 2065." Participants were called upon to look ahead to the next fifty years of global higher education, drawing from their academic fields, as well as their leadership experience within and beyond higher education. The resulting collection includes discussions of current trends that will impact the future of universities, as well as discussions of specific challenges likely to face higher education institutions, both generally and in particular regions. Some contributors outline steps that higher education institutions and/or policymakers should adopt today to prepare for those challenges, while others imagine the university of the future. Edited by IAUP secretary-general emeritus Jason Scorza, this book is dedicated to the memory of J. Michael Adams, who served both as president of Fairleigh Dickinson University and president of IAUP, and includes some of his final writings on the topic of the future of global higher education. Founded in 1965, IAUP is the world's largest association of university chief executives from higher education institutions. Membership is limited to individuals who serve or have served as presidents, rectors, or vice-chancellors at accredited colleges or universities. ![]() English | October 11, 2024 | ISBN: 8342864952 | 277 pages | EPUB | 0.70 Mb This is your ultimate guide to nourishing your body while still enjoying delicious, satisfying meals. The trust between historians and their readers has always been founded upon this traditional claim. In a postmodern world, that claim and that trust have both been challenged as never before, drawing either angry or apologetic responses from historians. Hermeneutics, History and Memory answers differently. It sees the sceptical challenge as an opportunity for reflection on history's key processes and practices, and draws upon methodological resources that are truly history's own, but from which it has become estranged. In seeking to restore these resources, to return history to its roots, this book presents a novel contribution to topical academic debate, focusing principally upon: the challenges and detours of historical methodology hermeneutic interpretation in history the work of Paul Ricoeur the relation between history and memory. Hermeneutics, History and Memory will appeal to experienced historical researchers who seek to explore the theoretical and methodological foundations of their empirical investigations. It will also be highly beneficial to research students in history and the social sciences concerned with understanding the principles and practices through which documentary analysis and in-depth interview can be both validated and conducted. ![]() Free Download Heritage Cookies of the Mediterranean World: Black & White Edition by Scott Pavelle, Kate Pavelle, Miranda Pavelle English | November 11, 2024 | ISBN: 1942920121 | 452 pages | EPUB | 6.09 Mb More than 250 recipes from the Mediterranean World, ranging form easy, to elegant, to delightfully extravagant! Kent 2017 | 217 Pages | ISBN: 1606353179 | EPUB | 1 MB Decades before the Civil War, the free American public was gripped by increasingly acrimonious debates about the nation's "peculiar institution" of slavery. Ministers considered the morality of slavery from their pulpits, legislators debated it in the halls of government, professors discussed it in their classrooms, and citizens argued about it in their communities. Antislavery women wrote novels and stories designed to convince free Americans about slavery's evils, to discuss the future of abolitionism, and to debate the proper roles of free and enslaved women in the antislavery struggle. Many antebellum writers and editors believed fiction was an especially gender appropriate medium for women to express their ideas publicly and a decidedly effective medium for reaching female readers. Believing that women were naturally more empathetic and imaginative than men, writers and editors hoped that powerfully told stories about enslaved people's sufferings would be invaluable in converting free female readers to abolitionism. Female antislavery authors consistently expressed a belief in women's innate moral superiority to men. While male characters in women's fiction doubted the validity of abolitionism (at best) and actively upheld the slave system (at worst), female characters invariably recognized slavery's immorality and did all in their power to undermine the institution. Certain of women's moral clarity on the "slave question," female antislavery authors nonetheless struggled to define e how women could best put their antislavery ideals into action. When their efforts to morally influence men failed, how could women translate their abolitionist values into activism that was effective but did not violate nineteenth-century ideals of "respectable" femininity? Holly M. Kent analyzes the literary works produced by antislavery women writers during the antebellum era, considers the complex ways that female authors crafted their arguments against slavery and reflected on the best ways for women to participate in antislavery activism. Since existing scholarship of antislavery women's literature has largely concentrated on Harriet Beecher Stowe's 1852 bestseller Uncle Tom's Cabin, the voices of other, more obscure antislavery women writers have all too often been lost. Her Voice Will Be on the Side of Right brings the ideas, perspectives, and writings of a wide range of female antislavery authors back into our understandings of debates about gender, race, and slavery during this crucial era in U.S. history. ![]() Free Download Hemming Flames By Patricia Colleen Murphy 2016 | 89 Pages | ISBN: 1607325519 | EPUB | 1 MB Volume 19 of the May Swenson Poetry Award Series, 2016 Throughout this haunting first collection, Patricia Colleen Murphy shows how familial mental illness, addiction, and grief can render even the most courageous person helpless. With depth of feeling, clarity of voice, and artful conflation of surrealist image and experience, she delivers vivid descriptions of soul-shaking events with objective narration, creating psychological portraits contained in sharp, bright language and image. With Plathian relentlessness, Hemming Flames explores the deepest reaches of family dysfunction through highly imaginative language and lines that carry even more emotional weight because they surprise and delight. In landscapes as varied as an Ohio back road, a Russian mental institution, a Korean national landmark, and the summit of Kilimanjaro, each poem sews a new stitch on the dark tapestry of a disturbed suburban family's world. The May Swenson Poetry Award is an annual competition named for May Swenson, one of America's most provocative and vital writers. During her long career, Swenson was loved and praised by writers from virtually every school of American poetry. She left a legacy of fifty years of writing when she died in 1989. She is buried in her hometown of Logan, Utah. |
