When the Syrian regime used sarin and other chemical weapons against dissidents in August 2013, an estimated 1729 people were killed including 400 children. President Barack Obama warned that the use of chemical weapons would constitute a "red line", but he refused to take military action. From the Gulf to Ararat Imperial Boundary Making in the Late Ottoman Empire
Free Download G. E. Hubbard, "From the Gulf to Ararat: Imperial Boundary Making in the Late Ottoman Empire"
English | ISBN: 1784531219 | 2015 | 328 pages | PDF | 16 MB
The western frontier between Persia and the Ottoman Empire was long a source of disputed claims by each. Supposedly settled under the Treaty of Ezerum of 1847, in reality it took a further seventy years to settle the details. This was achieved by the Turco-Persian Frontier Commission. Ernest Hubbard was Secretary to the Commission and a key factor in its success. From the Gulf to Ararat is his account of the Commission and of the regions through which they travelled. Often amusing but always informative it reveals the realities of making a boundary in practice and the need to be aware of local factors such as race, tradition, and religion, when dealing with boundary issues. With an introduction by Sue Littledale, the author's granddaughter, new photographs and biographical material, and a foreword by Richard Schofield, one of the leading international authorities on territorial questions in the Middle East, From the Gulf to Ararat offers an engaging yet remarkably relevant insight into the realities of boundary delimitation.

From Metaphysics to Culture
Free Download From Metaphysics to Culture: Music as a Factor in the Emergence of Modern Psychology, 1750-1900
English | 2025 | ISBN: 3031895940 | 382 Pages | PDF EPUB (True) | 5 MB
This book is a follow-up to the book Tracing the Emergence of Psychology, 1520-1750: A Sophisticated Intruder to Philosophy (Springer 2020). In contrast, this new book covers the period 1750-1900. Whereas the previous book focused on how psychology intervened in philosophy and theology, the perspective now is how philosophy and psychology tried to free themselves from each other. Kant's critical project formed an important start on this. Nevertheless, this was a struggle during the whole period, with a culmination at the end of the 19th century. When experimental psychology was established in Leipzig, psychology became regarded as an independent science. Another aspect of this new project is to pursue how experimental psychology ended up with music and culture as important factors. These are highly related to the role of sensation in psychology, which influenced how Baumgarten turned the psychological project into aesthetics in 1750. Thus, psychology in dialogue with music and aesthetics forms the red thread in this book. This book targets all interested in the history of psychology.

Fragments of a Lost Homeland Remembering Armenia
Free Download Armen T. Marsoobian, "Fragments of a Lost Homeland: Remembering Armenia"
English | ISBN: 1784532118 | 2015 | 368 pages | PDF | 41 MB
The Armenian world was shattered by the 1915 genocide. Not only were thousands of lives lost but families were displaced and the narrative threads that connected them to their own past and homelands were forever severed. Many have been left with only fragments of their family histories: a story of survival passed on by a grandparent who made it through the cataclysm or, if lucky, an old photograph of a distant, silent, ancestor. By contrast the Dildilian family chose to speak. Two generations gave voice to their experience in lengthy written memoirs, in diaries and letters, and most unusually in photographs and drawings. Their descendant Armen T. Marsoobian uses all these resources to tell their story and, in doing so, brings to life the pivotal and often violent moments in Armenian and Ottoman history from the massacres of the late nineteenth century to the final expulsions in the 1920s during the Turkish War of Independence. Unlike most Armenians, the Dildilians were allowed to convert to Islam and stayed behind while their friends, colleagues and other family members perished in the death marches of 1915-1916.Their remarkable story is one of survival against the overwhelming odds and survival in the face of peril.
