Free Download Roger A. Freeman - The Fight for the Skies: Allied Fighter Action in Europe and North Africa 1939-1945
Cassell | 1999 | ISBN: 0304352985 | English | 196 pages | PDF | 130.68 MB
The true story of Allied fighter action during World War II. It covers all the Western and Mediterranean theatres of war, concentrating on how and where Allied fighters were deployed. All major fighter types are represented in the photographs, including Spitfires, Hurricanes, Gladiators, Tempests and Typhoons, Mustangs, P-38s, P-47s, P-51s, Whirlwinds and Meteors, as well as Beaufighters and Mosquitoes. The activities of these very varied fighter types included escorting daylight bombing raids, fighter-bomber intruder operations into occupied Europe, and ground-attack activities in support of land forces in North Africa, Sicily, Italy and in North-Western Europe from the Normandy Campaign onwards. Flying fighters during World War II may have seemed glamorous, but it was also appallingly dangerous. More than 22,000 British and American fighter aircraft were lost during the conflict and over 9000 pilots died. Roger A. Freeman's book is as much about the men who flew in battle as it is about the aircraft, their performance, armament and overall effectiveness. More than 270 photographs provide a panorama of the war in the air above Western Europe and North Africa.

Free Download The Fifth Plague: Cattle, Contagion, and the Medical Posthumanities (Palgrave Studies in Animals and Literature) by Lucinda Cole
English | November 19, 2025 | ISBN: 3031927923 | 272 pages | True ePUB, PDF | 30 Mb
This book examines murrain, or mass mortalities of cattle, in ways that bridge the gap between animal studies and the health humanities. Beginning with early modern European disease ecologies but informed by contemporary epidemiological and ecological concerns, The Fifth Plague offers a new historical approach to literary plague studies, one taking seriously real and imagined relationships between human outbreaks, such as bubonic plague and cholera, and a series of even more mysterious animal diseases that killed in equally great numbers. Chapters include careful readings of literary texts by, among others, William Shakespeare, John Dryden, Daniel Defoe, and Sophie Amelia Prosser.. Uniting these readings is a shared history of murrains recorded in Virgil, but also the powerful legacy of the Ten Plagues of Egypt narrative, in which human and non-human afflictions are materially and theologically bound. "Great mortalities" of cattle, Cole argues, brought with them feelings of individual and collective vulnerability. As scientists and humanists face increasingly politicized information networks, this book calls for an exploration of the past, present, and future of humanity's decidedly interdependent and zoonotic existence.

Free Download The Feminine Matrix of Sex and Gender in Classical Athens By Kate Gilhuly
2008 | 220 Pages | ISBN: 0521899982 | PDF | 1 MB
In The Feminine Matrix of Sex and Gender in Classical Athens, Kate Gilhuly explores the relationship between the prostitute, the wife, and the ritual performer in Athenian literature. She suggests that these three roles formed a symbolic continuum that served as an alternative to a binary conception of gender in classical Athens and provided a framework for assessing both masculine and feminine civic behavior. Grounded in close readings of four texts, "Against Neaira," Plato's Symposium, Xenophon's Symposium, and Aristophanes' Lysistrata, this book draws upon observations from gender studies and the history of sexuality in ancient Greece to illuminate the relevance of these representations of women to civic behavior, pederasty, philosophy, and politics. In these original readings, Gilhuly casts a new light on the complexity of the classical Athenian sex/gender system, demonstrating how various and even opposing strategies worked together to articulate different facets of the Athenian subject.

Free Download G. F. Kennan - The Fateful Alliance: France, Russia, and the Coming of the First World War
Pantheon Books | 1984 | ISBN: 0394534948 | English | 300 pages | PDF | 138.22 MB
This book is not really about the "coming of the First World War" because it is a detailed account of the negotiations that resulted in the 1894 Franco-Russian alliance. The main actors are Montebello, Laboulaye, Mohrenheim, Giers, Obruchevs, and Boisdeffre. Kennan says the alliance was a bad idea, and pretty much blames this a priori as the cause of World War I. Kennan also says he sees too much of the 1890s mentality in the contemporary (1980s) world, but more dangerous because of nuclear weapons. But definitely a good account of the messy sausage making that was behind 19th century diplomacy.
