Following the seminal work of Douglass C. North and Barry R. Weingast (1989), many scholars have concluded that the 'credible commitment' that was provided by parliamentary backing of government as a result of the Glorious Revolution of 1688 provided the key institutional underpinning on which modern public finances depend. In this book, a specially commissioned group of historians and economists examine and challenge the North and Weingast thesis to show that multiple commitment mechanisms were necessary to convince public creditors that sovereign debt constituted a relatively accessible, safe and liquid investment vehicle. Questioning Credible Commitment provides academics and practitioners with a broader understanding of the origins of financial capitalism, and, with its focus on theoretical and policy frameworks, shows the significance of the debate to current macroeconomic policy making. ![]() Free Download Knut H. Sørensen, "Questing Excellence in Academia " English | ISBN: 0367259338 | 2021 | 236 pages | PDF | 14 MB Unlike almost most other studies of neoliberal universities and academic capitalism this book ethnographically explores and interprets those transformations and their contradictions empirically in the everyday practices of students, faculty members, and administrators at two public universities: NTNU in Norway and UCLA in California. ![]() Free Download Niko Pollner, "Query Optimization in Distributed Heterogeneous Data Stream Systems" English | ISBN: 3961474516 | 2021 | 269 pages | PDF | 3 MB Data stream systems support queries on continuously arriving data. They provide similar query facilities like relational database systems. However, data stream systems continuously evaluate the queries on the arriving data and discard the data afterwards. Thus, it is possible to process high volumes of rapidly arriving data. Application examples are the monitoring of IT infrastructure or the processing of data from wireless sensor networks in wildland or animal surveillance scenarios. Compared to centralized data stream systems, distributed data stream systems can lower the resource demand, improve the performance and increase the lifetime of wireless sensor networks. This is particularly true if the data sources are already distributed and the hosts of the data sources take part in query processing. In my dissertation, I investigate the interdependencies of logical query optimization and the assignment of operators to hosts for distributed data stream systems on heterogeneous hosts. In particular, I discuss the mathematical representation of selected optimization goals and constraints like resource limits for cost-based query optimization. I propose a technique to estimate whether logical query optimization steps may interfere with the subsequent assignment of operators to hosts. Well-known heuristic algorithms are adapted to the optimization problem of assigning operators to hosts. An evaluation compares the different algorithms. Moreover, I propose an algorithm for load balancing by multiple instantiation of operators. ![]() Free Download Joseph Brennan, "Queerbaiting and Fandom: Teasing Fans through Homoerotic Possibilities " English | ISBN: 160938671X | 2019 | 296 pages | AZW3 | 2 MB In this first-ever comprehensive examination of queerbaiting, fan studies scholar Joseph Brennan and his contributors examine cases that shed light on the sometimes exploitative industry practice of teasing homoerotic possibilities that, while hinted at, never materialize in the program narratives. Through a nuanced approach that accounts for both the history of queer representation and older fan traditions, these essayists examine the phenomenon of queerbaiting across popular TV, video games, children's programs, and more. ![]() Free Download Christopher Murphy, "Quantum Security: Revolutionizing Network Security with Digital IDs " English | ASIN : B0DN9Z2NBZ | 2025 | 148 pages | MOBI | 285 KB In a world where cybersecurity threats evolve daily, it's time to leave traditional, flawed security models behind. This book introduces a groundbreaking approach that applies the quantum principle of superposition to user authentication. Just as a particle exists in multiple states until observed, a user's presence on a network remains undefined until their Digital ID is verified. Once verified, their identity collapses into a single truth-eliminating any risk of impersonation or fraud. ![]() Free Download Christopher Murphy, "Quantum Security: Revolutionizing Network Security with Digital IDs " English | ASIN : B0DN9Z2NBZ | 2025 | 148 pages | AZW3 | 333 KB In a world where cybersecurity threats evolve daily, it's time to leave traditional, flawed security models behind. It is also completely mad. Although the theory quite obviously works, it leaves us chasing ghosts and phantoms; particles that are waves and waves that are particles; cats that are at once both alive and dead; and lots of seemingly spooky goings-on. But if we're prepared to be a little more specific about what we mean when we talk about 'reality' and a little more circumspect in the way we think a scientific theory might represent such a reality, then all the mystery goes away. This shows that the choice we face is actually a philosophical one. ![]() Free Download Xin Guo, "Quantitative Trading: Algorithms, Analytics, Data, Models, Optimization" English | ISBN: 1498706487 | 2016 | 357 pages | MOBI | 11 MB The first part of this book discusses institutions and mechanisms of algorithmic trading, market microstructure, high-frequency data and stylized facts, time and event aggregation, order book dynamics, trading strategies and algorithms, transaction costs, market impact and execution strategies, risk analysis, and management.
