Yet despite these accomplishments, markets have long been accused of causing profound injustices and creating a stultifying materialism that impoverishes the human soul.

English | April 15, 2025 | ISBN: 9798230621225 | 101 Pages | EPUB (True) | 279.91 KB
"The Catalan Language: Identity and Evolution in Late Medieval Catalunya" by Philip Decker explores the rich and complex history of the Catalan language during the late medieval period, examining its evolution from a vernacular dialect to a symbol of political autonomy and cultural identity. Through detailed historical analysis, Decker traces how Catalan developed in the context of the Crown of Aragon, influenced by political events, cultural exchanges, and the dynamic relationships between the Catalan-speaking regions and neighboring powers. The book delves into how Catalan flourished in the courts, in religious and scholarly texts, and in the everyday lives of the common people, despite the gradual pressures of Castilianization. Decker also explores the cultural revival during the Renaixença and the challenges Catalan faces in modern times, offering an insightful examination of the language's role as both a tool of communication and a marker of Catalan identity throughout history.

The Captains and The Kings

The Captains and The Kings
English | November 6, 2025 | ASIN: B0FZY24RML | 394 pages | EPUB (True) | 25.44 MB
The Captains and the Kings by Edith Benham Helm is a richly textured portrait of America's transformation from the Gilded Age into the modern world, seen through the lives of those who led and those who served. Helm, who spent decades as a White House social secretary and close observer of Washington's elite, draws back the curtain on the interplay of politics, power, and personality that defined an era. With elegance and insider knowledge, she explores how ambition and idealism collided within the corridors of influence — and how the character of a nation was shaped by both its captains and its kings.Through a series of personal recollections, Helm traces her experiences among presidents, first ladies, and diplomats, capturing moments of quiet humanity behind public grandeur. The narrative moves from glittering receptions to intimate conversations, revealing the moral strength, humor, and fallibility of those who guided America through war and peace. Yet at its heart, The Captains and the Kings is less a chronicle of fame than a meditation on service — on the unseen figures, often women, who upheld the dignity and continuity of government life. Written with poise, wit, and a keen historian's sense of occasion, Helm's book offers readers a rare glimpse of political and social history from within. Her graceful prose and firsthand detail illuminate a vanished world of ceremony, conviction, and courtesy, while her reflections on duty and democracy remain strikingly relevant. The Captains and the Kings stands as both memoir and cultural document — a testament to a woman who witnessed history unfold from the heart of power.

The Boring Billion A Deep History of Earth's Longest Quiet (The History of Earth Book 11)

The Boring Billion: A Deep History of Earth's Longest Quiet (The History of Earth Book 11)
English | 16 Oct. 2026 | ASIN: B0HN7ZMJCG | 294 Pages | Epub | 4.50 MB
In 1995 three scientists sampled two and a half kilometres of Australian limestone every ten to twenty metres and found the carbon of a vanished sea holding within a part or two per thousand of zero for hundreds of millions of years. Was the planet still, or was the instrument stuck? The interval from about 1,800 to 800 million years ago has been called the boring billion, a name already set in quotation marks, as something the interval "has been called", in the 2006 paper this book traces it to.The Boring Billion: A Deep History of Earth's Longest Quiet reads that line against every other witness the rocks hold. Iron chemistry from shales of fourteen regions describes a layered, iron-rich ocean. Pigments of purple sulfur bacteria from a 1,640-million-year-old rift basin put hydrogen sulfide, by the ecology of their living relatives, within about twenty metres of the sunlight. Oxygen estimates run from a thousandth of the present level, by chromium isotopes, to several per cent, by air trapped in salt and by a model of one basin's bottom water, and the methods differ by as much as two orders of magnitude. A rift erupted two million cubic kilometres of lava, a collision raised a Himalayan-scale mountain belt, and the sea's surviving records, at the resolution they allow, show little answer to either. No ice sheet is known under a fainter Sun, and the greenhouse budget does not close. The reader will understand why a flat line can be the signature of a regulated planet, and why that reading is a hypothesis rather than a proof. Low oxygen, a starved iron-rich ocean and a carbon cycle tied to both may have held one another in place while oxygen rose in some basins and later rocks elsewhere read low again, until the records changed over a window around 800 million years ago in an order that is still argued. Evidence and its limits are named. It is the eleventh volume of The History of Earth, the Silence of the Earth library of evidence-led natural history.
