Without Aretha Franklins full-scale reinventions of gospel, R&B, Mariah Careys octave-leaping runs, Barbra Streisands Broadway-born brilliance, or Tina Turners dazzling moxie, pop musics brightness would be dimmed: excitement levels would be lower, the drama would be nonexistent. Divas operate on a larger-than-life level, giving heft and heart to wistful ballads and roof-raising dance numbers alike.
