Free Download An Ornament for Jewels: Love Poems For The Lord of Gods, by Venkatesa By Steven P. Hopkins
2007 | 200 Pages | ISBN: 0195326407 | PDF | 1 MB
In this companion volume to Singing the Body of God (Oxford 2002), Steven P. Hopkins has translated into contemporary American English verse poems written by the South Indian Srivaisnava philosopher and saint-poet Venkatesa (c. 1268-1369). These poems, in three different languages - Sanskrit, Tamil, and Maharastri Prakrit -- composed for one particular Hindu god, Vishnu Devanayaka, the ''Lord of Gods'' at Tiruvahindrapuram, form a microcosm of the saint-poet's work. They encompass major themes of Venkatesa's devotional poetics, from the play of divine absence and presence in the world of religious emotions; the ''telescoping'' of time past and future in the eternal ''present'' of the poem; love, human vulnerability and the impassible perfected body of god; to the devotional experience of a ''beauty that saves'' and to what Hopkins terms the paradoxical coexistence of asymmetry and intimacy of lover and beloved at the heart of the divine-human encounter. Moreover, these poems form not only a thematic microcosm, but a linguistic one embracing all three of the poet's working languages. Like the remembered world of Proust's Combray in the taste of madeleine dipped in tea, or Blake's World in a Grain of Sand, we taste and see, in this one particular place, and in this one particular form of Vishnu, various protean forms and powers of the divine, and trace a veritable summa of theological, philosophical, and literary designs. Each translated poem forms a chapter in itself, has its own individual short Afterword, along with detailed linguistic and thematic notes and commentary. The volume concludes, for comparative reasons, with a translation of Tirumankaiyalvar's luminous cycle of verses for Devanayaka from the Periyatirumoli. As much an argument as an anthology, this book will be of interest to students and scholars of South Asian studies, comparative religion, and Indian literatures.

2008 | 248 Pages | ISBN: 0753194066 | EPUB | 1 MB
The remarkable life story of the man who inspired the film Hotel Rwanda Readers who were moved and horrified by Hotel Rwanda will respond even more intensely to Paul Rusesabagina's unforgettable autobiography. As Rwanda was thrown into chaos during the 1994 genocide, Rusesabagina, a hotel manager, turned the luxurious Hotel Milles Collines into a refuge for more than 1,200 Tutsi and moderate Hutu refugees, while fending off their would-be killers with a combination of diplomacy and deception. In An Ordinary Man, he tells the story of his childhood, retraces his accidental path to heroism, revisits the 100 days in which he was the only thing standing between his "guests" and a hideous death, and recounts his subsequent life as a refugee and activist.

Free Download An Introduction to Waves and Oscillations in the Sun By A. Satya Narayanan
2013 | 224 Pages | ISBN: 1461443997 | PDF | 4 MB
"An Introduction to Waves and Oscillations in the Sun" is intended for students and researchers who work in the area of solar and astrophysics. This book contains an introduction to the Sun, basics of electrodynamics, magneto-hydrodynamics for force-free and current-free fields. It deals with waves in uniform media with relevance to sound waves and Alfven waves, and with waves in non-uniform media like surface waves or waves in a slab and cylindrical geometry. It also touches on instabilities in fluids and observational signatures of oscillations. Finally, there is an introduction to the area of helio-seismology, which deals with the internal structure of the Sun.

Free Download An Introduction to Gauge Theories, 2nd Edition
English | 2025 | ISBN: 1032883227 | 290 pages | True PDF,EPUB | 13.56 MB
Written by world-leading experts in particle physics, this new book from Luciano Maiani and Omar Benhar, with contributions from the late Nicola Cabibbo, is based on Feynman's path integral formulation of quantum field theory. Key elements of gauge theories are described―Feynman diagrams, gauge-fixing, Faddeev-Popov ghosts―as well as renormalisation in Quantum Electrodynamics. Quarks and QCD interactions are introduced. Renormalisation group and high-momentum behaviour of the coupling constants are discussed in both QED and QCD, with asymptotic freedom derived at one-loop. These concepts are related to the Higgs boson mass and models of grand unification. The new edition has been updated throughout, with two new chapters presenting an outline of Lattice QCD field theory and the renormalisation group analysis of the prominent ΔI = 1/2 rule in kaon decay. The most recent Lattice QCD results on the light quark mass spectrum and on a quantitative justification of the ΔI = 1/2 rule are also discussed. The Chapter on the anomalous magnetic moment of the muon now includes an update on the Lattice QCD determination of the hadronic vacuum polarisation contribution, which turns out to be in good agreement with the most recent experimental determination of the muon g-2.

Free Download An Introduction to Environmental Biotechnology By Milton Wainwright
1999 | 171 Pages | ISBN: 1461373948 | PDF | 15 MB
An Introduction to Environmental Biotechnology provides an introduction to the subject of environmental biotechnology. Environmental biotechnology refers to the use of micro-organisms and other living systems to solve current environmental problems such as the detoxification of pollutants and clean-up of oil tanker spills. Additionally, it refers to the biotechnology of the agricultural environment, as well as the use of biopesticides and the application of microorganisms to the mining, metal recovery and paper industries. This is the only comprehensive introductory account of this subject matter. Beginning with an introduction to microbial growth, An Introduction toEnvironmental Biotechnology aims to provide the non-specialist with a complete overview of environmental biotechnology. It is presented in an easy to read style with illustrations and includes frequent references to the use of higher plants as well as micro-organisms in environmental biotechnology. An Introduction to Environmental Biotechnology is geared toward a non-specialist audience, including engineers and environmental chemists, and environmental scientists who have limited knowledge of microbiology and biotechnology.
