Must it represent these within a specific stylistic range? Or is it enough for the author to be identified as African American? In Deans and Truants, Gene Andrew Jarrett traces the shifting definitions of African American literature and the authors who wrote beyond those boundaries at the cost of critical dismissal and, at times, obscurity. From the late nineteenth century to the end of the twentieth, de facto deans--critics and authors as different as William Howells, Alain Locke, Richard Wright, and Amiri Baraka--prescribed the shifting parameters of realism and racial subject matter appropriate to authentic African American literature, while truant authors such as Paul Laurence Dunbar, George S. Schuyler, Frank Yerby, and Toni Morrison--perhaps the most celebrated African American author of the twentieth century--wrote literature anomalous to those standards. Jarrett explores the issues at stake when Howells, the "Dean of American Letters," argues in 1896 that only Dunbar's "entirely black verse," written in dialect, "would succeed." Three decades later, Locke, the cultural arbiter of the Harlem Renaissance, stands in contrast to Schuyler, a journalist and novelist who questions the existence of a peculiarly black or "New Negro" art. Next, Wright's 1937 blueprint for African American writing sets the terms of the Chicago Renaissance, but Yerby's version of historical romance approaches race and realism in alternative literary ways. Finally, Deans and Truants measures the gravitational pull of the late 1960s Black Aesthetic in Baraka's editorial silence on Toni Morrison's first and only short story, "Recitatif." Drawing from a wealth of biographical, historical, and literary sources, Deans and Truants describes the changing notions of race, politics, and gender that framed and were framed by the authors and critics of African American culture for more than a century. ![]() Free Download De-essentializing Refugees: Perceptions, Experiences, and Becoming of Syrians in Türkiye by Umut Ozkaleli English | 2025 | ISBN: 9819655188 | 210 Pages | True ePUB | 0.5 MB ![]() Free Download De-essentializing Refugees: Perceptions, Experiences, and Becoming of Syrians in Türkiye by Umut Ozkaleli English | 2025 | ISBN: 9819655188 | 210 Pages | True PDF | 6 MB ![]() Free Download De la Base au Lancement: Un Guide pour Démarrer et Gérer des Entreprises (French Edition) by Mustafa Al-Dori French | October 18, 2024 | ISBN: N/A | ASIN: B0DKB4VTKX | 250 pages | EPUB | 0.41 Mb Description du livre : ![]() Free Download David Cronenberg: Clinical Trials by Violet Lucca, Little White Little White Lies English | December 24, 2024 | ISBN: 1419771914 | 288 pages | MOBI | 104 Mb An illustrated monograph on the work of legendary writer/director David Cronenberg, master of body horror and cinematic provocateur behind films such as The Fly, Scanners, Naked Lunch, Eastern Promises, and Crimes of the Future ![]() Free Download Daughters of the Bamboo Grove: From China to America, a True Story of Abduction, Adoption, and Separated Twins by Barbara Demick English | May 20, 2025 | ISBN: 0593132742 | True EPUB | 352 pages | 27.7 MB The heartrending story of twin sisters torn apart by China's one-child policy and the rise of international adoption-from the author of the National Book Award finalist Nothing to Envy, one of today's leading reporters ![]() Free Download Dating Mastery: The Ultimate Guide to Confidence, Communication, and Lasting Love by Richard Stuart English | November 25, 2024 | ISBN: N/A | ASIN: B0DP1RF73R | 215 pages | EPUB | 0.22 Mb Dating Mastery: The Ultimate Guide to Confidence, Communication, and Lasting Love ![]() Free Download Datenschutz und IT-Compliance German | 2024 | ISBN: 3836286742 | 400 pages | MOBI | 7.99 Mb Pflichtlektüre für alle IT-Verantwortlichen ![]() Free Download Databases for Data-Centric Geotechnics: Site Characterization (Challenges in Geotechnical and Rock Engineering) by Kok-Kwang Phoon, Chong Tang English | December 20, 2024 | ISBN: 1032578955 | 490 pages | MOBI | 26 Mb Databases for Data-Centric Geotechnics forms a definitive reference and guide to databases in geotechnical and rock engineering, to enhance decision-making in geotechnical practice using data-driven methods. This first volume pertains to site characterization. The opening chapter presents an in-depth analysis of site data attributes, including the establishment of a new taxonomy of site data under "4S" (site generalizations, spatial features, sampling characteristics, and smart data) to provide a novel agenda for data-driven site characterization. Type 3 machine learning methods (disruptive value) are possible as sensors become more pervasive and more intelligent. A comprehensive overview of site characterization information is also presented with a focus on its availability, coverage, value to decision making, and challenges. The remaining 13 chapters cover databases of soil and rock properties and the application of these databases to rock socket behavior, rock classification, settlement on soft marine clays, permeability of fine-grained soils, and liquefaction among others. The databases were compiled from studies undertaken in many countries including Austria, Australia, Brazil, Canada, China, France, Finland, Germany, India, Iran, Japan, Korea, Malaysia, Mexico, New Zealand, Norway, Singapore, Sweden, Thailand, the United Kingdom, and the United States. ![]() Free Download Data-Driven, Nonparametric, Adaptive Control Theory English | 2025 | ISBN: 3031780027 | 346 Pages | PDF EPUB (True) | 51 MB Data-Driven, Nonparametric, Adaptive Control Theory introduces a novel approach to the control of deterministic, nonlinear ordinary differential equations affected by uncertainties. The methods proposed enforce satisfactory trajectory tracking despite functional uncertainties in the plant model. The book employs the properties of reproducing kernel Hilbert (native) spaces to characterize both the functional space of uncertainties and the controller's performance. Classical control systems are extended to broader classes of problems and more informative characterizations of the controllers' performances are attained.
