Adopted initially by the British in order to make sense of their polyglot territorial empire, the global perspective served to make heterogeneous spaces and nonwhite subjects "legible," and in effect produced the regions it sought merely to describe. The global was the dominant perspective from which the world was produced for representation and control. It also set the terms within which subjectivity and history came to be imagined by colonizers and modern anticolonial nationalists. In this book, Sanjay Krishnan demonstrates how ideas of the global took root in eighteenth- and nineteenth-century descriptions of Southeast Asia. Krishnan turns to the works of Adam Smith, Thomas De Quincey, Abdullah bin Abdul Kadir, and Joseph Conrad, four authors who discuss the Malay Archipelago during the rise and consolidation of the British Empire. These works offer some of the most explicit and sophisticated discussions of the world as a single, interconnected entity, inducting their readers into comprehensive and objective descriptions of the world. The perspective organizing these authors' conception of the global-the frame or code through which the world came into view-is indebted to the material and discursive possibilities set in motion by European conquest. The global, therefore, is not just a peculiar mode of thematization; it is aligned to a conception of historical development unique to European colonial capitalism. Krishnan troubles this dominant perspective. Drawing on the poststructuralist and postcolonial approaches of Jacques Derrida, Michel Foucault, and Gayatri Chakravorty Spivak, and challenging the recent historiography of empire and economic histories of globalization, he elaborates a bold new approach to the humanities in the age of globalization. ![]() Free Download Ian Marshall, "Reading Shaver's Creek: Ecological Reflections from an Appalachian Forest " English | ISBN: 0271080205 | 2018 | 168 pages | PDF | 29 MB What does it mean to know a place? This collection explores these and related questions through a series of reflective essays and poems on Pennsylvania's Shaver's Creek landscape from the past decade. ![]() Free Download Martin T. Dinter, Charles Guérin, Marcos Martinho, "Reading Roman Declamation - Calpurnius Flaccus" English | 2017 | ISBN: 311040124X, 3110685132 | PDF | pages: 192 | 1.1 mb As a genre situated at the crossroad of rhetoric and fiction declamatio offers the freedom to experiment with new forms of discourse. Placing the literariness of declamatio into the spotlight, this volume showcases declamation as a realm of genuine literary creation with its own theoretical underpinning, literary technique and generic conventions. Focusing on the oeuvre of Calpurnius Flaccus this volume demonstrates that these texts constitute a genre on their own, the rhetorical and literary framework of which remains not yet fully mapped. Contributions from an international group of leading scholars from the field of Roman Literature and Rhetoric will explore the question of how Roman Declamation functions as a literary genre. This volume investigates the literary technique and the generic conventions of declamatio in its social, pedagocial and ethical context to determine "the poetics" of Roman Declamation. ![]() Free Download Reading Literature and Chronic Pain by Josie Billington English | 2025 | ISBN: 1350270210 | 255 Pages | True PDF | 2.58 MB ![]() Free Download Rawls's Political Liberalism By Thom Brooks (editor); Martha C. Nussbaum (editor) 2015 | 224 Pages | ISBN: 0231527721 | PDF | 1 MB Widely hailed as one of the most significant works in modern political philosophy, John Rawls's Political Liberalism (1993) defended a powerful vision of society that respects reasonable ways of life, both religious and secular. As anxiety grows over political and religious difference and new restrictions are placed on peaceful protest and individual expression, these core values have never been more critical. This anthology of original essays suggests new, groundbreaking applications of Rawls's work in multiple disciplines and contexts. It extends Rawls's progressive thought to the fields of law, economics, and public reason and explores political liberalism's relevance to the challenges of multiculturalism, the relationship between the state and religion, the struggle for political legitimacy, and the capabilities approach.Leading figures in politics and philosophy revitalize Rawls's prescription for a just society. ![]() Free Download Rawls and Religion By Tom Bailey (editor); Valentina Gentile (editor) 2014 | 328 Pages | ISBN: 0231538391 | PDF | 1 MB In this volume, established scholars of Rawls and the philosophy of religion reexamine and rearticulate the central tenets of Rawls's theory and show how they accommodate and respond to religion in liberal political life. Contributors reassert the subtlety, openness, and flexibility of his senses of liberal "respect" and "consensus" and reveal their inclusive implications for religious citizens. They also explore the means Rawls proposes for accommodating nonliberal religions in liberal politics, developing his conception of "public reason" into a novel account of the possibilities for rational engagement between liberal and religious ideas. Last, they reevaluate Rawls's liberalism from the "transcendent" perspectives of religions themselves, critically considering its normative and political value, as well as its own "religious" character.Established scholars of Rawls and the philosophy of religion reexamine and rearticulate the central tenets of Rawls's theory ![]() Free Download Rapid On-Site Evaluation (ROSE) in Diagnostic Interventional Pulmonology Volume 3: Neoplastic Diseases by Jing Feng English | EPUB | 2020 | 173 Pages | ISBN : 981153909X | 288.55 MB This book offers cutting-edge evidence on using rapid on-site evaluation (ROSE) for the diagnosis of neoplastic diseases in pulmonology. ROSE has become an efficient interventional diagnostics tool and important reference for lung disease differentiation, increasing the adequacy rate, diagnostic yield and accuracy of interventional pulmonary procedures.
