Free Download Jocelyn Sharlet, "Patronage and Poetry in the Islamic World: Social Mobility and Status in the Medieval Middle East and Central Asia "English | ISBN: 1848853696 | 2011 | 336 pages | PDF | 3 MB
Panegyric poetry, in both Arabic and Persian, was one of the most important genres of literature in the medieval Middle East and Central Asia. Jocelyn Sharlet argues that panegyric poetry is important not only because it provides a commentary on society and culture in the medieval Middle East, but also because panegyric writing was one of the key means for individuals to gain social mobility and standing during this period. This is particularly so within the context of patronage, a central feature of social order during these times. Sharlet places the medieval Arabic and Persian panegyric firmly within its cultural context, and identifies it as a crucial way of gaining entry to and movement within this patronage network. This is an important contribution to the fields of pre-modern Middle Eastern and Central Asian literature and culture.
Free Download Christina Yi, "Passing, Posing, Persuasion: Cultural Production and Coloniality in Japan's East Asian Empire"English | ISBN: 0824895223 | 2023 | 212 pages | PDF | 4 MB
Passing, Posing, Persuasion interrogates the intersections between cultural production, identity, and persuasive messaging that idealized inclusion and unity across Japan's East Asian empire (1895-1945). Japanese propagandists drew on a pan-Asian rhetoric that sought to persuade colonial subjects to identify with the empire while simultaneously maintaining the distinctions that subjugated them and marking their attempts to self-identify as Japanese as inauthentic, illegitimate forms of "passing" or "posing." Visions of inclusion encouraged assimilation but also threatened to disrupt the very logic of imperialism itself: If there was no immutable difference between Taiwanese and Japanese subjects, for example, then what justified the subordination of the former to the latter? The chapters emphasize the plurality and heterogeneity of empire, together with the contradictions and tensions of its ideologies of race, nation, and ethnicity.
Free Download Todd D. Little, "Parceling in Structural Equation Modeling "English | ISBN: 1009211641 | 2022 | 70 pages | PDF | 3 MB
Parceling is pre-modeling strategy to create fewer and more reliable indicators of constructs for use with latent variable models. Parceling is particularly useful for developmental scientists because longitudinal models can become quite complex and even intractable when measurement models of items are fit. In this Element the authors provide a detailed account of the advantages of using parcels, their potential pitfalls, as well as the techniques for creating them for conducting latent variable structural equation modeling (SEM) in the context of the developmental sciences. They finish with a review of the recent use of parcels in developmental journals. Although they focus on developmental applications of parceling, parceling is also highly applicable to any discipline that uses latent variable SEM.

Free Download Elisabeth Blum, "Pantheism, Panpsychism, and Secularization: Case Studies from Early Modernity"English | ISBN: 3796551262 | 2024 | 160 pages | PDF | 2 MB
Pantheism and panpsychism view the divine as omnipresent in the world or declare everything to be animated. This book presents a small number of case studies that show how these theories arose in the Renaissance and were linked to the overall intellectual climate of early modernity that became increasingly secularized. Pantheism and panentheism (the view that God embraces the world) preluded modern secularism as the attitude that deems religion and theology irrelevant to science. One case is Renaissance magic as a comprehensive worldview. Cosmology debated the relation between the Creator and creation so that it could be relegated to either mythology or divine transcendence. The idea of universal ensoulment shaped a secular physics as visible in the theory of mind and in the modern development of monadology.
