Aber vor allem begründen die Zisterzienser ein Institut, das das Mönchsrecht weitreichend beeinflusst und bis heute Bestand im Kirchenrecht hat: das Generalkapitel.Monika Dihsmaier vergleicht die drei bis heute bekannten Versionen der Carta Caritatis, die vermutlich alle aus dem 12. Jahrhundert stammen. Die dort normierten Institute werden dargestellt, auf mögliche Quellen hin untersucht sowie deren Entwicklung aufgezeigt. Dabei ergibt sich, dass die Rechtsentwicklung, die im 12. Jahrhundert an der Schwelle zu einem neuen Rechtsdenken stand, auch die Zisterzienser vor Herausforderungen stellte. Sie mussten nicht nur viele Rechtsinstitute entwickeln, sondern auch die dafür erforderliche Rechtssprache.
