Geoarchaeology The Human-Environmental Approach

Geoarchaeology The Human-Environmental Approach
Free Download Carlos Cordova, "Geoarchaeology: The Human-Environmental Approach "
English | ISBN: 1788313011 | 2018 | 336 pages | PDF | 17 MB
Geoarchaeology is traditionally concerned with reconstructing the environmental aspects of past societies using the methods of the earth sciences. Once a purely technical subject, the field has been steadily enriched by scholars from a diversity of disciplines and by the introduction of the human-environmental approach pioneered by Karl Butzer in the late 1970s. Yet much has happened since that time, particularly as the importance of global perspectives on environmental change has emerged.

Genesis in Poetry

Genesis in Poetry
Free Download Jeffrey M Cohen, "Genesis in Poetry"
English | ISBN: 1725250810 | 2019 | 264 pages | EPUB | 2 MB
If you are searching for a straightforward retelling of the book of Genesis in a modern idiom, this is not the book for you. If you are looking exclusively for a poetic rendering of the simple text, you've picked up the wrong book. If you are primarily after a textual commentary, you'll expect one that is far more expansive. If, however, you are after a lively, dramatic, highly original, and entertaining retelling of the Genesis stories in rhymed verse, which skillfully synthesizes both critical literary analysis and exotic, folkloristic, and occasionally whimsical elements-then this book is a must! The general reader will be charmed by what one influential British poet, Ann Sansom, has described as its "close rhymes and steady rhythm [which] are indeed very musical." The student of Bible and folklore will be especially interested in the detailed "Notes to the Text," providing the sources for and rationales of the many supplements to the familiar traditional text.

Genesis and Validity The Theory and Practice of Intellectual History

Genesis and Validity The Theory and Practice of Intellectual History
Free Download Genesis and Validity: The Theory and Practice of Intellectual History by Martin Jay
English | November 12, 2021 | ISBN: 081225340X, 0812224965 | True EPUB | 312 pages | 3.8 MB
There is no more contentious and perennial issue in the history of modern Western thought than the vexed relationship between the genesis of an idea and its claim to validity beyond it. Can ideas or values transcend their temporal origins and overcome the sin of their original context, and in so doing earn abiding respect for their intrinsic merit? Or do they inevitably reflect them in ways that undermine their universal aspirations? Are discrete contexts so incommensurable and unique that the smooth passage of ideas from one to the other is impossible? Are we always trapped by the limits of our own cultural standpoints and partial perspectives, or can we somehow escape their constraints and enter into a fruitful dialogue with others?

Genesis 1-11 Its Literary Coherence and Theological Message

Genesis 1-11 Its Literary Coherence and Theological Message
Free Download Thomas A. Keiser, "Genesis 1-11: Its Literary Coherence and Theological Message"
English | ISBN: 1625640927 | 2013 | 186 pages | EPUB | 1404 KB
Although the object of centuries of study, only relatively recently has Genesis 1-11 been analyzed with attention to its literary unity and theological purpose. With the latter twentieth century's increased attention to synchronic approaches, many scholars began to consider Genesis 1-11 from the perspective of a literary unity in its final form and, therefore, to consider matters of intent and theological content. Yet, in spite of these treatments, there have been virtually no attempts to view the entire section of Genesis 1-11 as a literary and theological unity presenting a coherent message. This book begins to fill this void by seeking to identify the message of these chapters through utilization of a literary-theological approach. The study focuses on literary features, including the broader issues of surface and deep structure, while other topics of special concern include rhetoric as the art of composition for the purpose of communication and persuasion, and the use of speech as an important indicator of key issues in Hebrew narrative.

Genesis 1 and the Creationism Debate Being Honest to the Text, Its Author, and His Beliefs

Genesis 1 and the Creationism Debate Being Honest to the Text, Its Author, and His Beliefs
Free Download Steven Dimattei, "Genesis 1 and the Creationism Debate: Being Honest to the Text, Its Author, and His Beliefs"
English | ISBN: 1498231349 | 2016 | 146 pages | EPUB | 3 MB
Modern readers often assume that Genesis 1 depicts the creation of the earth and sky as we know it. Yet in an appeal for textual honesty, Steven DiMattei shows that such beliefs are more representative of modern views about this ancient text than the actual claims and beliefs of its author. Through a culturally contextualized and objective reading of the texts of Genesis 1 and 2, this study not only introduces readers to the textual data that convincingly demonstrate that Genesis' two creation accounts were penned by different authors who held contradictory views and beliefs about the origin of the world and of man and woman, but also establishes on textual grounds that what the author of Genesis 1 portrayed God creating was the world as its author and culture perceived and experienced it-not the objective world, but a subjective world, subject to the culturally conditioned views and beliefs of its author. In the end, this book clearly illustrates that the Bible's ancient texts do in fact represent the beliefs and worldviews of ancient peoples and cultures-not those of God, not those of later readers, and especially not those of modern-day Creationists.

Gender and Austerity in Popular Culture Femininity, Masculinity and Recession in Film and Television

Gender and Austerity in Popular Culture Femininity, Masculinity and Recession in Film and Television
Free Download Helen Davies, "Gender and Austerity in Popular Culture: Femininity, Masculinity and Recession in Film and Television "
English | ISBN: 1784536644 | 2017 | 240 pages | PDF | 2 MB
From the gritty landscapes of The Hunger Games and The Walking Dead, to the portrayal of the twenty-first-century precariat in Girls, this book explores how transatlantic visual culture has represented and reconstructed ideas of gender in times of financial crisis. Drawing on social, cultural and feminist theory, these writers explore how men and women experience austerity differently and illuminate the problematic ways in which economic policy can shape how gender is presented in popular culture. Written from the perspective that the popular is indeed political, this book considers film, literature and television's ideological attitudes towards race, sex and disability. It also takes into account how mass culture has responded to austerity in the past and the present, whilst examining the impact that feminism will have in the future.
