English | 2001 | pages: 188 | ISBN: 080322012X | PDF | 0,6 mb
Historians have shown us the drama and sweep of the swathe Sherman's March cut through the South. Officers have bequeathed us accounts of what happened in strategic and practical terms. But for a gritty, day-by-day, on-the-ground view of what the march to Atlanta meant to the common soldier, nothing can compare to the diary of an enlisted man like John Hill Ferguson.

On Freedom
Free Download On Freedom By Cass R. Sunstein
2019 | 136 Pages | ISBN: 0691192022 | PDF | 1 MB
A short essay exploring whether and when people's free choices lead to better lives, and the role that the "problem of navigability" plays in the possibility and limits of freedom. From New York Times bestselling author Cass Sunstein, a brisk, provocative book that shows what freedom really means-and requires-todayIn this pathbreaking book, New York Times bestselling author Cass Sunstein asks us to rethink freedom. He shows that freedom of choice isn't nearly enough. To be free, we must also be able to navigate life. People often need something like a GPS device to help them get where they want to go-whether the issue involves health, money, jobs, children, or relationships. In both rich and poor countries, citizens often have no idea how to get to their desired destination. That is why they are unfree. People also face serious problems of self-control, as many of them make decisions today that can make their lives worse tomorrow. And in some cases, we would be just as happy with other choices, whether a different partner, career, or place to live-which raises the difficult question of which outcome best promotes our well-being.Accessible and lively, and drawing on perspectives from the humanities, religion, and the arts, as well as social science and the law, On Freedom explores a crucial dimension of the human condition that philosophers and economists have long missed-and shows what it would take to make freedom real.

On Bullshit
Free Download On Bullshit By Harry G. Frankfurt
2009 | 80 Pages | ISBN: 1400826535 | PDF | 1 MB
A #1 NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLEROne of the most salient features of our culture is that there is so much bullshit. Everyone knows this. Each of us contributes his share. But we tend to take the situation for granted. Most people are rather confident of their ability to recognize bullshit and to avoid being taken in by it. So the phenomenon has not aroused much deliberate concern. We have no clear understanding of what bullshit is, why there is so much of it, or what functions it serves. And we lack a conscientiously developed appreciation of what it means to us. In other words, as Harry Frankfurt writes, "we have no theory." Frankfurt, one of the world's most influential moral philosophers, attempts to build such a theory here. With his characteristic combination of philosophical acuity, psychological insight, and wry humor, Frankfurt proceeds by exploring how bullshit and the related concept of humbug are distinct from lying. He argues that bullshitters misrepresent themselves to their audience not as liars do, that is, by deliberately making false claims about what is true. In fact, bullshit need not be untrue at all. Rather, bullshitters seek to convey a certain impression of themselves without being concerned about whether anything at all is true. They quietly change the rules governing their end of the conversation so that claims about truth and falsity are irrelevant. Frankfurt concludes that although bullshit can take many innocent forms, excessive indulgence in it can eventually undermine the practitioner's capacity to tell the truth in a way that lying does not. Liars at least acknowledge that it matters what is true. By virtue of this, Frankfurt writes, bullshit is a greater enemy of the truth than lies are.

Omics and Genome Editing
Free Download Omics and Genome Editing: Revolution in Crop Improvement for Sustainable Agriculture
English | 2025 | ISBN: 3031816382 | 252 Pages | PDF EPUB (True) | 23 MB
This book offers up-to-date research on genome editing and omics technologies from renowned academics with established backgrounds from throughout the globe. The world population is expected to touch 9-10 billion by 2050 and to feed the growing population, 50% more food must be produced globally than is currently produced. Nonetheless, it is a difficult challenge to increase the food output of the currently existing crops on available land. Over the past few decades, traditional crop enhancement techniques like plant breeding and other agricultural technology have made a significant contribution to food and nutritional security. With the use of strong technologies, genome editing strategies can significantly improve the productivity and efficiency of current agricultural practices. Discovering the underlying mechanisms influencing features of economic value has been made possible through genome editing through CRISPR/Cas9, primer and base editing, and OMICs through genomics, proteomics, metabolomics, transcriptomics, and phenomics.

Numerical Analysis of Electromagnetic Fields
Free Download Numerical Analysis of Electromagnetic Fields by Pei-bai Zhou
English | PDF | 1993 | 418 Pages | ISBN : 3642503217 | 24.7 MB
Numerical methods for solving boundary value problems have developed rapidly. Knowledge of these methods is important both for engineers and scientists. There are many books published that deal with various approximate methods such as the finite element method, the boundary element method and so on. However, there is no textbook that includes all of these methods. This book is intended to fill this gap. The book is designed to be suitable for graduate students in engineering science, for senior undergraduate students as well as for scientists and engineers who are interested in electromagnetic fields. Objective Numerical calculation is the combination of mathematical methods and field theory. A great number of mathematical concepts, principles and techniques are discussed and many computational techniques are considered in dealing with practical problems. The purpose of this book is to provide students with a solid background in numerical analysis of the field problems. The book emphasizes the basic theories and universal principles of different numerical methods and describes why and how different methods work. Readers will then understand any methods which have not been introduced and will be able to develop their own new methods. Organization Many of the most important numerical methods are covered in this book. All of these are discussed and compared with each other so that the reader has a clear picture of their particular advantage, disadvantage and the relation between each of them. The book is divided into four parts and twelve chapters.

Nuclear Statecraft History and Strategy in America's Atomic Age
Free Download Nuclear Statecraft: History and Strategy in America's Atomic Age By Francis J. Gavin
2012 | 232 Pages | ISBN: 0801465761 | PDF | 1 MB
We are at a critical juncture in world politics. Nuclear strategy and policy have risen to the top of the global policy agenda, and issues ranging from a nuclear Iran to the global zero movement are generating sharp debate. The historical origins of our contemporary nuclear world are deeply consequential for contemporary policy, but it is crucial that decisions are made on the basis of fact rather than myth and misapprehension. In Nuclear Statecraft, Francis J. Gavin challenges key elements of the widely accepted narrative about the history of the atomic age and the consequences of the nuclear revolution. On the basis of recently declassified documents, Gavin reassesses the strategy of flexible response, the influence of nuclear weapons during the Berlin Crisis, the origins of and motivations for U.S. nuclear nonproliferation policy, and how to assess the nuclear dangers we face today. In case after case, he finds that we know far less than we think we do about our nuclear history. Archival evidence makes it clear that decision makers were more concerned about underlying geopolitical questions than about the strategic dynamic between two nuclear superpowers.Gavin's rigorous historical work not only tells us what happened in the past but also offers a powerful tool to explain how nuclear weapons influence international relations. Nuclear Statecraft provides a solid foundation for future policymaking.

Nowhere to Go
Free Download Nowhere to Go: The Tragic Odyssey of the Homeless Mentally Ill
English | 2025 | ISBN: 3031846842 | 213 Pages | PDF EPUB (True) | 8.4 MB
This open access book attempts to answer the question, "Why are so many severely mentally ill people homeless or incarcerated?" Updated since it's original 1988 release, this book tracks the history of this question in the United States. The answer begins in 1955, when the United States deinstitutionalized the 559,000 patients who were in state mental hospitals. Today, only 35,000 remain. In 1963, Congress funded President Kennedy's proposed federally funded Community Mental Health Centers (CMHCs), whose main purpose was to provide care for the patients being released from the hospitals. However, most of the CMHCs never did so, but rather became counseling centers for individuals with less serious mental illnesses. The lack of psychiatric aftercare for severely mentally ill individuals resulted in more than 200,000 of them who are homeless and more than 250,000 others who are in jails and prisons. This story also includes little known details such as the role played by conscientious objectors who worked in the state hospitals during WWII; Rosemary Kennedy's psychosis; the influence of the conservative John Birch society on Presidents Nixon and Reagan; and mental health myths incorrectly attributed to Reagan. Finally, the book discusses what needs to be done to improve the mental illness treatment system. This is an ideal guide for psychiatrists, psychologists, and members of the public who are concerned about homelessness.
