Free Download Katie Walker Grimes, "Fugitive Saints: Catholicism and the Politics of Slavery"
English | ISBN: 1506416721 | 2017 | 204 pages | EPUB | 4 MB
How should the Catholic church remember the sins of its saints? This question proves particularly urgent in the case of those saints who were canonized due to their relation to black slavery. Today, many of their racial virtues seem like racial vices. This book proposes black fugitivity, as both a historical practice and an interpretive principle, to be a strategy by which the church can build new hagiographical habits. Rather than searching inside itself for racial heroes, the church should learn to celebrate those black fugitives who sought refuge outside of it.

Free Download Robert Kolb, "Fruit for the Soul: Luther on the Lament Psalms"
English | ISBN: 1451485212 | 2015 | 373 pages | EPUB | 5 MB
Given a life spent in scholarship and controversy, it is easy to forget how much energy Martin Luther devoted to helping the common person understand and take comfort from Gods word. This commitment extended to even the most challenging of biblical texts, and nowhere is this more apparent than Luthers work on the lament psalms. Difficult to understand, and perhaps even more difficult to implement in life and devotion, the lament psalms played a key role in Luthers thought. More importantly, the lament psalms were for Luther an essential part of the Christians understanding of the life of faith.

Free Download Bal Krishna Sharma, "From this World to the Next: Christian Identity and Funerary Rites in Nepal "
English | ISBN: 1506475825 | 2013 | 238 pages | EPUB | 2 MB
This book explores and analyzes funerary-rite struggles in a nation where Christianity is a comparatively recent phenomenon and where many families have Christian and Hindu, Buddhist and Tradionalist (kiranti) members and go through traumatic experiences at the death of their family members. The context of mixed affiliation raises questions of social, psychological, and religious identity for Christian converts. The author has used an applied theological approach to explore and analyze the findings in order to address the issue of funerary rites with which the Nepalese church is struggling.

Free Download Christopher B. Barnett, "From Despair to Faith: The Spirituality of Sren Kierkegaard"
English | ISBN: 1451474695 | 2014 | 215 pages | EPUB | 2 MB
Sren Kierkegaard has been called many things, from brooding genius and "melancholy Dane" to the father of existentialism. Yet, rather than clarify the nature of Kierkegaards writings, such labels have often obscured other important aspects of his authorship. Such, indeed, is the case with Kierkegaards standing as a spiritual author.

Free Download Emily Allen-Hornblower, "From Agent to Spectator: Witnessing the Aftermath in Ancient Greek Epic and Tragedy "
English | ISBN: 3110439069 | 2016 | 344 pages | EPUB | 4 MB
This book looks at witnesses to suffering and death in ancient Greek epic (Homer's Iliad) and tragedy. Internal spectators abound in both genres, and have received due scholarly attention. The present monograph covers new ground by dealing with a specific subset of characters: those who are put in the position of spectator to (and, often, commentator on) their own deed(s). By their very nature, protagonists are confined to the role of witness to the suffering (or deaths) they have caused only for brief stretches of time ― often a single scene or even just the length of a speech ― but every instance is of central importance, not just to our understanding of the characters in question, but also to the articulation of fundamental themes within the poetic works under examination. As they shift from the status of agent to that of witness, these protagonists, qua spectators to the consequences of their actions, give voice to, dramatize, and enact the tragic motifs of human helplessness and mortal fallibility that lie at the core of Homeric epic and Greek tragedy and that define the human condition, in a manner that leads the audience looking on to ponder their own.

Free Download Carolin Kosuch, "Freethinkers in Europe: National and Transnational Secularities, 1789-1920s "
English | ISBN: 311068716X | 2020 | 368 pages | EPUB | 2 MB
This volume brings together for the first time case studies on secularists of the 19th and early 20th centuries in national and transnational perspectives including examples from all over Europe. Its focus is on freethinkers taken as secular avant-gardes and early promoters of secularity. The authors of this book deal with multiple historical, religious, social, and cultural backgrounds and, in these contexts, analyze freethinkers' organizations, projects, networks, and contributions to forming a secular worldview, in particular, the promotion of concrete undertakings such as civil baptism or initiatives to leave church. Next to this secularist agenda, the contributions also take into account ambivalences and difficulties freethinkers were faced with, namely, the tensions between a national self-image and the transnational direction the movement has taken; the regional base of many projects and their transregional horizon; freethinkers' cultural programs and their immanent political mission; and the dialogue with respectively the conceptual distinction from other secularist groups. Readers interested in the history of secularity will learn that it was a heterogeneous enterprise already in its beginnings. This set the course for later European and global developments.
